Douglas destroyed that role & was so good the desired effect of him being a villain was actually used as many guys young wall street guys as a hero & inspiration. It's amazing stone thought played a sorta head game to get what he wanted & it worked. I think gecko said actually a lot of very truthful insightful things.

Michael Douglas is, of course, entirely correct when he observes that in several instances, Oliver Stone has extracted the best screen performances from a variety of actors: Douglas was never better than as Gekko in the original Wall Street [ Best Actor Oscar ]; Tom Cruise gave by far his best performance in Born On The Forth Of July [Best Actor Oscar nominee]; Charlie Sheen was outstanding in Platoon and Kevin Costner was excellent in J.F.K. Stone has had his share of misfires, but when he is hitting on all cylinders, his directorial work is outstanding.

He won the Oscar for Platoon too and again people liked it but maybe for the wrong reasons like they like Gekko for the wrong reasons Stone is often trying give a message and people miss it they are so entertained by the story.

Michael Douglas is right about movie stars and pushing them. All those pictures were their best films. Kevin Costner in JFK, James Woods in Salvador, Tom Cruise in Born on the 4th, and MD in Wall Street.

@RichardElden how so? the war experience was never recreated as well as in platoon I believe, even if paths of glory, saving private ryan and chimes at midnight came close. It's not just that, through his elegant use of camera movements and other tricks he manages to make you understand his characters and follow the story no matter how complex (ex:JFK) he's brave about the subjects he tackles and delivers powerhouse performances from his actors.

@lakesha00 what makes you think that Oliver Stone "doesn't have the guts" to make the movie you want. He's been making seemingly whatever the hell he feels like for a long time. Isn't it more likely to assume he either a. doesn't agree with you on the issue or b. does not think it's the most important topic/topic he has authority to cover?

Because of the irony of asking Douglas, a man who acted for 20 years+ at that point (and comes from an acting family), would not have any idea of how to act.
@annalisavajda252
@annalisavajda252 Жыл бұрын
Well he has his own perceptions and it's a task to get them translated to film. You listen to Woody Harrelson he said Stone told him he saw violence in him though Harrelson could not figure why when all he had seen him in was white men can't jump and cheers but Stone knew Woodys Dad was in prison for murder he was a hitman so perhaps he was looking to validate the whole generational violence theory the Mickey character has in NBK be it true or not. Sounds like the Platoon shoot was grueling too but war is grueling so that likely made it more realistic.

Miscast? Oh, sure, Douglas was a terrible Gordon Gekko. And I'm sure he has no idea what he's talking about here. Clint Eastwood has done a lot of great things, and if he doesn't like that kind of directing technique, then that's his choice; however, a whole lot of people do. So excuse me if I don't agree with you or Eastwood.

Jon Avent is a joke. This guy can't stop to talk about his own accomplishment enough to appreciate others. Maybe he should tone down the arrogance until he gets a good movie under hie belt.
