Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson looks back on his decision to retire from the NFL and says a couple factors were at play: his body was hurting and the Lions went into “rebuild” mode instead of acquiring a few pieces to make a run. Plus, legends and influencers chime in from Hall of Fame induction festivities in Canton, including QB Matthew Stafford, fellow Hall of Famer Michael Irvin and Calvin’s father, Calvin Johnson Sr.

Calvin is the most physically gifted receiver ever. 6’5” 230 lb frame with 4.3 speed, crazy leaping ability, and strong hands. He was also a great blocker and could run through tackles. Detroit misses him dearly. 🐐

@@Kamasutra941 u must not watch much football. There’s more to being a great receiver than just running by someone and throwing a hand up. Calvin is the biggest set of speed and athleticism the game has ever seen. Calvin could do everything like I said before.

You see Matthew Stafford is the only player that Detroit didn’t have retire on them. He got rewarded with a trade, but Barry Sanders wasn’t allowed to get traded to the Miami Dolphins, he was forced to either play for The Lions or retire. Interesting 🤔 Stafford is a turnover machine that got rewarded for his so so play, yet the best player in franchise history got an ultimatum. So sad!

Detroit wasted a generational talent in Calvin Johnson 6'5 fast, strong, great leaping ability so Detroit how in the H*ll do you lose a receiver like that

it's the second time the exact same thing happened... they suck so bad that their best player is like "ok im tired of being the only good player on the team, let me go have a chance to win" and then the lions say "no" like a jealous little kid

When your body is falling apart & the will to do it doesn’t matter contender or losing franchise, your done. I don’t think he would have stayed regardless. Them hits hurt man, concussions added and constantly getting your fingers separated catching and fighting off the press coverage man it’s grueling. Took my fingers and ankles 5 years to heal from constant separation and moving and rolling my ankles. So I don’t blame him at all.

@@KeepMovingForwardAlways983 Yeah, but the incentive for winning a superbowl is immense. If they were winning like 12 games every year, wouldn't be surprised if he decided I'll sacrifice my body for a couple more seasons because the reward at the end of it is in sight. Obv Detroit is a tomato can, and doubt he wanted to stay any longer.

@@flash012234 I hear you and I don’t disagree but I understand how he feels and to be honest most my career from pee we all the way through college I was winning man. The game does take a toll on you, and I’m not doubting that he wouldn’t have stayed but he was already contemplating retiring before he actually did and the lions were competing at that time even if they were not in the super bowl or went deep in the playoffs. In my opinion I believe he would have left regardless the outcome. To be honest hearing him now he probably would have come back if the lions didn’t do him dirty with that money to be honest @ Flash. What do you think???

Calvin probably wanted to leave years before he actually did. For some reason I think something with the ownership rubbed him the wrong way. And he's just not saying it. it takes a lot for a guy to know he's gonna lose almost every game, every season... that shit would get old FAST, the Lions are so fucking bad that they drove their two best players in history into early retirement for the same reason... because they were tired of losing and being the only good player on the team.
