Watch Michael Jackson performing his number one hit "Billie Jean" live at the Olympiastadion in Munich, Germany on June 27, 1999 as part of the MJ & Friends concert tour to a sold-out attendance of 85,000. AI Remastered and Upscaled with Color Corrections.
Since I remastered the previous concert in Seoul, I decided to give this one a shot as well. This concert took place 2 days after the one held in Seoul, as part of the Michael Jackson And Friends World Tour. The stage was modeled after the previous one used in Korea. And if I'm going to be honest I would still pick the performance in Seoul over this one in Munich. There were a lot of things that didn't really satisfy me in this particular performance, from the excessive overload of smoke, to the faintly heard guitar, there are many things I wanted to correct in this video.
Apparently there are two sources of this concert available on the internet so far, with one of them being the high quality, overused and most known version which is from the German Broadcasting Network "ZDF" (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen), and the other coming from a Finnish Television Channel called "Yle TV2". In my opinion the Yle TV2 version is sort of unheard of, and is barely used so I decided to take both Broadcast versions and compare them side by side in this comparison video. We could easily agree that the ZDF version is far better than the one from Yle TV2, but for comparison purposes I had to compare the two. Both video sources have been slightly enhanced, with minor color corrections here and there. I attempted multiple times to correct the annoying excessive smoke they used on the stage, since it made Michael barely visible at some parts due to the stage lighting reflecting off of it. Also causing some odd oversaturation in the footage. The footage is overall overexposed during the chorus part until the moonwalk and there wasn't much I could do about that. However I tried my best to enhance the audio as much as I could since the audio as well is in need of heavy restoration.
The original audio sounded too cold, and had very minimal crowd noise. It sounded pretty distant as well and the energy just wasn't there either. It lacked a lot of treble and bass, and some of the instruments can be barely heard. You could faintly hear the guitar playing in the background during the moonwalk section which bummed me a lot. I aimed to fix all of those problems with the audio and got some pretty decent results. And honestly I am not that satisfied with the audio enhancement that much either, it's sometimes hard to restore audios like these. But I'm considering of doing a second enhancement on this one in the near future so no need to worry. The audio has been processed through Dolby and Audacity, in which I aimed to to increase the audio's overall dynamic range, in hopes to make it sound clearer and more crisp. I slightly increased the bass and adjusted the treble to my personal preferences and also gave it a slight reverb effect to it to give it a more lively feel and to fill in the minor silent gaps within the audio. The audio has also been EQ Compressed, making the loud and quiet parts closer together in volume.
• Michael Jackson & Friends Concert Tour
MJ & Friends were concerts held by American recording artist Michael Jackson in 1999, with numerous other performers as well. The purpose of the tour was to raise funds for children in Kosovo, Africa and elsewhere. Jackson gave two concerts during the tour. The first one took place in Seoul, South Korea on June 25 (exactly ten years before his death) and the second one was in Munich, Germany.
On December 31, 1999, Michael was scheduled to perform at Aloha Stadium in Hawaii and at Stadium Australia in Sydney. These plans were later scrapped.
