The original version of “Blood on the Dance Floor” was leaked by American producer Eulonzo on January 1st, 2021. It was unknown this version existed.
Although fans are familiar with the final version that was released on the “Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix” album, it has been revealed that “Blood on the Dance Floor” was originally written & recorded as far back as 1983 shortly after the release of the Thriller album, with the help of funk legend Rick James.
During one of Michael’s visits to James’ home in Buffalo, Rick took him to his recording studio studio in Buffalo, New York. The two had never collaborated together before. Michael was interested in seeing his production, so he fired up his synthesizer and absentmindedly began noodling with the keys and came up with the bass line. Running with the idea, he played all the instruments on the track. Afterwards, Michael added his beatbox rhythms.
As much as they enjoyed it, Michael started getting uncomfortable with the overwhelming amount of drugs & girls that would constantly follow James, so they had a falling out & scrapped the song. Rick would later take the concept of the track and it would evolve into the song ‘Cold Blooded’ on his album of the same name. Meanwhile, Michael would later revisit the song and it wold evolve into the version he created with Teddy Riley in March of 1991 - January 1997.
