March 31, 1981 Oscars
The 53rd Academy Awards, honoring the best in film for 1980, were presented March 31, 1981, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. The ceremonies, which were presided over by Johnny Carson, were originally scheduled for the previous day but were postponed due to the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.
David Lynch's The Elephant Man and Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull, with 8 nominations each, had the most nominations of this year's films. Their nominations included Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director. Michael Apted's Coal Miner's Daughter received 7 nominations while Ordinary People and The Stunt Man were also nominated.
The year's winner of acting categories also marked as the closest span ever between the four winners, all of whom were under 40 when they won the award. Robert De Niro was 37 when awarded Best Actor, Sissy Spacek was 31 when awarded Best Actress, Timothy Hutton was 20 when awarded Best Supporting Actor, and Mary Steenburgen was 28 when awarded Best Supporting Actress. In addition, Hutton was the youngest ever Best Supporting Actor winner. His award was one of four that Ordinary People won, more than any other movie; the movie also won Best Picture, Best Director for Robert Redford, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Alvin Sargent.
The lack of recognition for Christopher Tucker's make-up work on The Elephant Man prompted the creation of the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling the following year.
Best Supporting Actress nominee Eva Le Gallienne was born in 1899, which made her the last acting nominee to be born in the nineteenth century. As of 2014, this is the earliest Oscars for which all five directing nominees are still living.

Yeah I came here to see Michael and Diana too. This was like a month after they performed in her huge 1981 TV special together and the Wiz had just been shown on TV a few months before that and was wildly popular after people saw it on TV, so they must have been riding high here. I was 5 and my mom didn’t let me watch awards shows yet so I didn’t get to see this.

This is crazy. I just watched a bunch of movies from 1980 so I wanted to watch the oscars for the same year and this video takes me back in time to a time I never lived. The commercials, the celebrities. NUTS!! So nostalgic

Thank you for this! Crazy that this was filmed a day or two after Reagan was shot. I was only 8 but remember this vividly. Mom would cook a big pot of spaghetti sauce and we would sit on a picnic blanket in the living room with bread to dip into the sauce. This was our tradition with any big tv event. Thank you for rekindling this memory.

Of course. All they're doing is showing the bare basics of the awards they present, with still frames and zoom ins on footage from films which they could easily resolve the rights issues. If they could release the entirety of the Ceremonies onto streaming or Blu-ray, it would be great!😁

Michael and Diana were having a huge moment then. 4:55 They show Diana and Michael again walking in past the stands and then the titles “Academy Awards” are superimposed on them so that tells you how big they were in popular culture at that moment because they had just performed on her huge 1981 concert TV special together roughly a month before and the Wiz had just been shown on TV for the first time a few months before that and was wildly popular after people saw it on TV, so they must have been riding high here. I was 5 and my mom didn’t let me watch awards shows yet so I didn’t get to see this.

I feel like that Mary should have won for Best Actress. I knew it was going to be a close race between Mary and Sissy. Simply because they both won for their respective categories at the Golden Globes that year. The rest of the competition for me anyway in the Best Actress category just wasn't that strong.

He walks up holding hands with Diana Ross at the beginning of the video and then around 4:45 or so. He had his 1978-1981 face then. I didn’t really remember what he looked like before thriller so it took a moment for it to occur to me that it was him. Lol

No one in this show knows the biggest star of all time and the highest and largest award winner of all time is seated right there with them all. Is just a matter of 2 years and Michael Jackson took it all away from them, all the fame, the power, the love and the title goes to one man who truly stand out for the world! That man is Michael Jackson. He was an angel in disguise, God's last prophet on earth Michael Jackson was.

I wanna go back to 1981! Wow, I forgot! When Johnny Carson made the funny about paying $50 for a video cassette tape when you can see the movie in a theater for $40, I was sorta huh, (?) But then I got it. That's right! I'd forgotten how expensive they were back then, both Beta and VHS were around $50 or so for a new movie. And who remembers Laser Disc? I think those were $100, or so.

oh I can only hear it out of one headphone I'd play the RIP game if so many hadn't already passed (most recently Irene Cara) 9:52 yeah you keep telling yourself that Lucie Arnaz is a pretty good singer, and to think she almost got the part of Rizzo in Grease (but guess who wouldn't allow it) oooo commercials wow I guess A Day in Hollywood a Night in the Ukraine was that good because they are spoofing that number from the show (feel free to correct me if I'm incorrect in regards to original source)shame it lost to Evita but it was also up against the Greatest Show-er I mean Barnum) I didn't know Joe Pesci was in Raging Bull (don't worry dude you'll get yours) You shouldn't overlook him MTM after all you two hosted the Tony Awards the previous year well I learned something new, On the Road again was nominated for an Oscar (I actually like watching these awards shows, I find myself learning something new) wait the Oscars was on a Tuesday that year? (oh wait I remember it was delayed a day) they had a doc about Mount St Helens that quickly? Busy year for Best original song I saw Fame once....it was boring, and I wasn't prepared for the swearing and the nudity
