The rhythmic interplay between the instrumental arrangement and the vocals are truly unique and inspiring in this piece. There's this sense, in many cases, that Michael is playing the role of a horn player in the way he phrases. There is evidence of this in other pieces too, but this song really brings that 'instrument nature' of Michael's voice to the forefront.
...And you hear it in an extra enriching way when you get to isolate out the different instrumental aspects to hear how Michael's voice pulls and plays with time.
Lots more easter eggs and interesting discoveries too! Let's jump in!

You hear a lot of James Brown's influence in Michael's vocals on this track. That's definitely his aggressive gritty singing style. James Brown sang with the beat and added in all his nuances. Michael took that same approach and really took it to an untouchable level. As Michael said himself "Study the greats and become greater".

That’s what we’re trying to defend for Michael Jackson’s legacy, his voice placements, his vocal arrangements, he was a real genius... There are many artists who sing very well but I understand why Michael Jackson stayed in the studios of Motown with Berry Gordy, Bobby Taylor and Stevie Wonder... at the age of 11 he understood everything how to make a song...😊

The chorus has 3-4 layers of crescendo. Also all or most of Michael's choruses are by himself! The trumpets are signature 1980s tradition. His doing the "tappa do.. tappa do..." is repeated again in Remember The Time. Since Tabloid Junkie (History album 1995) and Price Of Fame (Bad album 1987) share similar theme of paparazzi, it'll be wonderful to watch your reaction to them.

MJ was a musical genius. It ran in his blood. He lived and breathed music. His mum even said as a baby he would dance around. He was constantly writing songs. Constantly coming up with new revolutionary ways to entertain us. When touring he would at times write song lyrics on pieces of paper and even on his pillow case. Michael's voice was an instrument in itself. He would beat box a rhythm and build the song around that. Such an amazing talent. And such a great humanitarian.

15:37 This vocal part basically matches with the saxophone solo, until right here. Now I can hear how smoothly Michael actually bends the note at this 'harmonic divergence.' 🎶 He does get quieter than the 🎷sax here; perhaps another of those intentional back-offs you describe. To my ears, this made Michael's voice seem 'strained' or 'faltering' at this part. 😕 Oh, and I've always loved that 🤌 sound labeled "OBX," presumably comprising the saxophone solo filtered through an Oberheim synthesizer. I don't recall hearing the _raw_ sax in the mix though.

Amazing! His voice is smooth as velvet one minute and rough and edgy the next. He had total master over his voice, but he was also motivated by emotion and the spontaneous vibe of the song it self. He's incredible! Love this song even more now, if that's possible.
