Fun Fact: 1) Michael cried at the end of every single recording take of this song, cause he was just feeling the emotion that bad. So Quincy Jones just left the tears at the end of the album version bc "it was just meant to be". And this song used to be his "Lucky Fan" song during his Bad and Dangerous tours, in which some lucky girl from the audience would get picked to go onstage with Michael. It later got replaced by You Are Not Alone on the HIStory Tour.

The high notes that you were referring to as falsetto notes were actually head voice notes. Most people don't know this but Michael hardly used falsetto, he used more "reinforced falsetto" and "head voice" to hit high notes. (Basically the difference is that head voice and reinforced falsetto are stronger than falsetto, falsetto is completely disconnect sound, reinforced falsetto and head voice are more connected sound than falsetto). Also, his chest voice range was incredible, he could go from a low bass C to a G5 only in his chest voice, which is not really an easy job!

1979 Off The Wall. There was a badass Jacksons album that came out in 1980 called Triumph. It's sick. There's a similar song to this on that album called "Time Waits For No One". The harmonies on that one is alien.

Anyone who "feels music and lyrics in their soul" knows that this song hits on a different level. Only a very small amount of people who ever lived can touch someone this emotionally with their voice...and the most impressive thing about this song, is MJ was completely into it, and felt everything we did and more!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If anyone hears this song and doesn't get emotional, they are completely clueless of human emotion (man or woman)!!!

Fun Fact: this video and the “Rock With You” video were shot the same day. Notice the same set, same camera angles and tricks, same hair cut. Both videos were directed by the same guy. Also, you’re right to think about ‘Ben’ because back in 1979 when this came out on the “Off The Wall” album he pleasantly surprised everyone with his delivery on this song. For one thing, he actually cries on the track and everyone knew it. But back then everyone was surprised that this was the same guy who years earlier sang a love song about a little rat and finally here he is at 21 singing a very mature song about love and lost.

Only people who truly listen to music and lyrics know just how emotional and personal this song is. It's not just that any adult man or woman (he's out of my life for females!) can relate. It is how Michael delivers it, I can honestly feel every emotion he emits, and that is the most rare thing a music artist can do. There have been many successful artists who have made hit records, but literally only a handful can make a man literally cry! I would say Marvin Gaye, AL Green, Daryle Hall, and a few others have made me this emotional...but it is far and few between! P.S. Whitney made me very emotional as well!

Year 1979, album Off the Wall. Fun fact: he wasn´t able to sing this song without breaking down at the end, so they left it there. More tips for you that are beautiful, beautiful balads from him: Gone Too Soon, Smile, Little Susie, Seeing Voice (an unreleased gem), Don´t Walk Away (similar vibe as this one). Mike did this song a lot live as well always bringing one of his female fans to join him onstage. Got pretty wild sometimes. lol
