It gives a more balanced and realistic perspective of Jordan's competition in his prime/Bulls era. The truth is Jordan didn't always dominate, terminate and annihilate opponents night in and night out. Guys didn't back down or cower away from MJ as much as the story is often told. Jordan was out-performed at times. He was out-duled at times. Yes he was the greatest, but he also lost battles too. Much of his greatness is in the fact that he didn't give up and he always kept coming back and competing.

Rauf came out after 2nd year. Curry came out after 4th. Comparing numbers year 2 to 6 for Rauf in NBA vs Curry year 1 to 4 same points & assists. He was traded after his best year averaging 19 + points & 6.8 assists. If nuggets would have given him green light & ran offense for him no doubt 25 to 30 points a game for his next 8 years. His best years were taken away period. Greatest freshman scoring record in college still not surpassed 30.2. Best free throw % in NBA hx but needed to shoot 1200 was 39 short. final 1 minute shot 80% (that’s as clutch as it gets) He would be taken out of game for 15 min come in the last minute & hit 3 shots in your face. And definitely having Dan Isel, who’s a big man, coaching you is completely different than having Steve Kerr. I watched almost all his games for four years in a row he wasn’t streaky, if he missed two shots in a row he would be taken out or he would be told not to shoot and he’d have to pass inside to Mutombo. Different game & era. Amazing quickness likely quickest ever shot & release. He missed cause he was pushed or hand checked. Tough to know but trajectory was same as these shot first PGs of this era.

Thanks so much for posting this! This is one of my favorite Bulls game ever even though they lost. They getting beat down in the first half and almost came all the way back and would have taken the lead if not for the Pippen travel. After that travel they ran out of gas from having to work so hard to knock down the score. Crazy that I still remember this game and I was 15 years old.

I watch games like these and it's amazing that a perimeter player like MJ was able to dominate his era - one that was still geared towards the big men and scoring/defending the paint. I hear young folks say that there weren't a lot of great perimeter players in the 90's. That's hardly the case. The game just wasn't geared for perimeter players then, the way it isn't for big men now. I think of guys like Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Mark Price, Tyrell Brandon, Kevin Johnson, Terry Porters.....point guards who could shoot. They would flourish in today's NBA. Guys like Dell Curry, Rex Chapman, Ricky Pierce, Drazen Pterovic (rip) would be bigger stars playing today's game as well. At the same time I look at Mutombo and he'd probably be a bench player in today's NBA.

Love that Nuggets team. Abdul Rauf’s game was the pinnacle of 90s shoot-first guards, a precursor to Steph, Trey, Dame etc. Back then, shooting threes (or long twos) off the dribble seemed rare. His dribble moves and high leaping jump shot feel like throwbacks, versus the hesis, step backs and chest shots of say a Trey or Lamelo.

I don’t think the nba suspended Mahmoud only because of his beliefs, I think they knew that he was gonna be the next big thing after MJ, I mean the dude was the first Steph and they feared that his attitude will spread to other players.
