Heat is a fine, fine movie, look forward to reading the book... I never dreamed that I would love the Insider but I absolutely did, it had an emotional heart way beyond the fairly bland premise. (A big part was probably Lisa Gerrard providing the score, around the same time as Gladiator. On a further side note, the fact that Crowe played Wigand just before he played Maximus was also an astonishing transformation)

The book is absolutely fabulous. I get the hesitation, but let me say it does not disappoint. It brings so much life to the characters and their stories. Mann details the characters origins with a fine tooth comb. Some of the chapters have you feeling like your back at the LA street shootout. Definitely worth it. Chris and Charlene have a beautiful origin story.

One of my favorite directors. His vis on film is amazing when using HD cameras a la Roger Deakins. Two favorite films of his, Collateral and Miami Vice. The night scenes are amazing with so much detail according to the commentary. The fight scene in Collateral was insane. Also, loved Manhunter with the younger William Peterson in the role. You can almost taste a hint of tv Miami Vice in that film. There are certain directors you watch their films because of how well they are (Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneavue??), Mann is one of them.

Love Michael Mann's work, especially Heat, Collateral, The Insider, Last of The Mohicans. I'm annoyed with Seth Doane's questioning Mann if he feels any responsibility about violence in America because he makes violent movies. It's just such a cheap shot, cliché question for film directors. Mann answered it perfectly by citing the fact that his style of filmmaking is not gratuitous at all. Mann is probably one of the most responsible, thoroughly researched filmmakers out there. This is well known. He doesn't do things for cheap effect. It's deliberately done with integrity because his style is to portray realism and authenticity. It's so lame when interviewers seem to want to provoke drama or elicit guilt in their subjects to sell their interview even if it's blatantly unwarranted. You might as well ask a Director if they feel responsible for all the corruption in the world because their films have a lot of corrupt characters. Lol. It's ridiculous.

I've got HEAT2 and as soon as I've finished reading my current book I'm straight on this. Michael is the Mann. From Miami Vice to Collateral. A master of his craft.

Great Director. I was lucky to meet him one night at an after screening party at the Château Marmont hotel in LA. I didn’t know he was going to be there. When I met him and we started to chat he was very friendly. Just like in this video on KZfaq. Very personable guy. Easy to talk to. I’ll never forget that. Can’t wait to see his Ferrari film.

That's interesting to hear that he wrote a book that is both a sequel and prequel to a movie starring the exact same two actors who also starred in The Godfather 2 - quite possibly the most famous movie ever made that is both a sequel and prequel.

Yeah!! Michael Mann is one of my favorite directors of all time, I have a book about him and his films and the meticulous nature of his process has helped me in my projects and life. I always wish that I could know him. Hoping that a sequel for the movie Heat can happen, and I'm interested in the Ferrari project too, sounds intriguing, with his style it can be a magnificent movie!

So, it's a direct sequel to heat? Like right after Hanna takes down McCauley?

Yes, plus prequel of previous jobs that the crew does, how Chris met Charlene, etc. The book is quite good. Finished the 470 pages in less than a week. .

Interesting that he admitted he didn't know L.A. that well like he thought so he rode with police calls on weekends and other things.......HEAT and Collateral showcase different areas of L.A. so much that the city was in a way a character in itself. Mann has a way with locations and that really puts you in the story when watching those films.
