Olivier said that Redgrave's Uncle Vanya was the best performance he ever saw in anything. I have to say, even in this relatively short scene, it is pretty impressive.

If what I've read is correct, soon after this Olivier had Redgrave sacked from his production of Ibsen's The Master Builder and took over his role himself. Olivier apparently believed Redgrave was drinking excessively, whereas in truth he was displaying early symptoms of Parkinson's.

Redgrave was a true innovator as an actor. Just the right amount of realism, with one foot steeped in madness, to keep it stage-interesting. It must have been unforgettable to watch him on stage.

Excellent! Truly amazing everything: acting, directing, camera work. Bravo! Real Chekhov! "Remember me you will!" - more correct translation than "You shell remember me". And also much more dramatic.
