Schumacher's destiny was always going to be glory. Just like the best in motorporst in general, it really doesn't matter if for some reason he hadn't reach F1, he wouldve find success in any other series. That's why he's a Legend.

In short, his short endurance career was pretty stellar, especially so as a junior competing against endurance veterans. And not to hate on Mazda, but the '91 24 hours was a clown show in the circus that was the "making WSC closer to F1" arc of motorsport. Schumacher and Mercedes deserved the win. Oh well, history is history. I am still sour about the death of Group C.

Wonderful memories from the WEC Group C era! Schumi was the up and coming dynamite back then. At first I personally thought Wendlinger and Frentzen were going to be the future stars of F1 but we all soon found out that Michael had that EXTRA SPECIAL charisma.

What's missing from this is the reason Benetton got involved in the discussion... At Spa, Tom Walkinshaw (Benetton team manager) persuaded Briatore that Benetton HAD to get Schumacher - because he'd seen how good he was in this other job - Team principal of the TWR Jaguar team in the WSC... It was Ford's purchase of Jaguar that brought Jaguar and Benetton together, with Walkinshaw instrumental in getting Benetton to offer Schumacher a firm contract to race. When the WSC then shut down, he was also able to bring over Jaguar designer Ross Brawn to Benetton for 1992 as Technical Director.. (Rory Byrne was already back, having had Reynard's F1 project cancelled and sold to Pacific Racing). Though Walkinshaw was later shuffled out the door (with Joan Viladelprat) after 1994 following the refuelling rig farce (officially he was 'chosen to run Ligier' which he and Briatore had just bought, anticipating Renault would never pull their supply of engines from a national French team, leaving Benetton/Ligier with the only Renault engines, and Williams stuck for 1995...) it was clear that Walkinshaw and Briatore were just too much ego to have in one place...and Walkinshaw was the fall guy for 1994. Walkinshaw then sold his stake in Benetton, left Ligier and bought Arrows during 1996; but having brought Brawn and Schumacher together at Benetton, set the groundwork for the Ferrari years in many ways.

I watched the 1991 Le Mans review a while ago. It was pretty funny hearing the commentators saying that this Michael Schumacher kid could be pretty good.

I remember in F1 Decade, where they talk about Spain 1994 (the race where Schumacher finished second despite being stuck in 5th gear for 2/3 of the race). Steve Matchett, who worked as a mechanic in the Benetton team at the time commented on what Schumacher said after the race. He explained that the way he was coping with the handicap of being stuck in 5th gear was trying weird racing lines to accommodate the braking and accelerating difficulties. A byproduct of this was that the fuel economy of the B194, already one of the cars with better fuel economy already (owing to using a V8 engine as opposed to the more widely used V10 engines and especially better than the heavy and thirsty V12 engines Ferrari in particular used), actually improved while he was stuck in 5th gear. If that wasn't impressive enough, not only did he still go on to lap almost as quickly as eventual winner Damon Hill, but he also made 2 pit stops, rejoining the race without stalling the engine. I'll stick my neck out and say that this performance of Schumacher that day was more impressive than any of his 91 wins

The Mercedes junior team was a radical idea as the WSC had acquired a reputation (rightly or wrongly) for being a good place for drivers not good enough for F1. Names such as Paolo Barilla, Teo Fabi, or Mauro Baldi or even Derek Warwick or Martin Brundle none of them F1 race winners but more than decent at WSC level. Great video though and some lovely WSC footage there! Let’s hope from 2023 the LM(D)H rules and influx of teams will really enhance the series.

Things like endurance racing can teach you huge lessons. Like, being consistent and patient can also mean being very fast as you learn what works and what doesn't. Sometimes realizing that, what felt slow was in fact extremely fast. This is why I feel that there is such thing as "the perfect lap" but you might not know it if you did it... There's always a turn you think you could have gone faster or an exit you could have given it more gas. But could you? Or were you straddling the limits and maximizing the net gain so perfectly that changing those things would only make you go slower?... 🤔

Group C cars were the best looking race cars, Mercedes C291 and C11, Mazda 787b, Jaguar Silk Cut.. no wonder the Pagani Zonda was modelled after the Group C cars

Good vid! No one talks about pre F1, that Michael had been so good in cars that were rocketships. That he set a new record at the fastest track in the world isn't surprising.

What I find interesting is why anyone thought a young driver driving Group C was a bad idea. I remember those seasons for Schumacher, Frentzen, and Wendlinger. All three were impressive, and everyone knew they were destined for Formula 1.

Trying to pronounce a name correctly goes a long way in our cultures (Germany, Austria etc.). Here, if you don't know a name, the first thing you do is ask how to pronounce it properly. You don't get any negative responses if you don't, but actively trying or even succeeding to pronounce a name correctly gives an instantly positive impression of you. Appreciate it.
