@yannicknaert3 жыл бұрын
@@CCCAPO yes! But you get it's the same in real life, the more we act like everything we do revolves around equality, and honesty, the more dishonest we come to treat people because our behaviour isn't what we choose anymore but instead it's dictated by fragments of social/political ideology. Micheal is the perfect representation of that, and naturally he became friends with Todd Packer who was a complete asshole, he looked up to Todd because that guy couldn't care less about the things Micheal needlessly kept worrying about. One of Michaels most revealing moments in terms of character growth was when he let go of his old friend and came to see him for what he was.

S1 Michael was too real to be kept in the show. It's like watching a live tourture session with the employees. I love it because I - and anyone has worked an office space - can relate, but it is not everyone's cup of tea. The subsequent reading of his character went for a noble personality which I think makes him much more likable.

What makes this a little better is that there really isn't any malice behind (most of) the moments where Michael is being offensive. He's just so oblivious that he thinks he's just being funny, and even when he's trying to not be offensive, he still manages to do so. He's not trying to be cruel or hurtful, he's just, ya know, kinda stupid. And has ZERO filter. EDIT: I guess I should add that this mostly applies to Michael AFTER Season 1. Season 1 is where they were trying to make his character more like Ricky Gervais in the UK show. Season 1 Michael is definitely more of a straight-up A-hole, which the viewers didn't like. The writers saw this and made a lot of changes, and it ended up being a better show for it, one that became it's own beast, rather than a pale imitation of the show it was based on.
@blazinjaden3 жыл бұрын
we need more people like him 😂
@richhartnell62333 жыл бұрын
He is such a good guy that he often over steps his opinions. Like when he kissed oscar. We all know he has nothing agianst gay people, but he needs to prove it, and it comes across even more offensive. That's one thing I love about him. He is just too good of a person, that always says the wrong thing. he doesn't hate anyone... except toby.
@yushi5603 жыл бұрын
@@alpha068 oh, I didn't mean to imply that Michael is never a straight-up a-hole (the thing with Pam's mom is possibly the worst thing he did as a person, on the show). Many of us have had serious second thoughts about someone after learning something about them that we didn't like. Those parts, while jerky and sad as they are, can be pretty relatable (which is why the comedy still works; laughter is, of course, at it's core, a reaction to unexpected/uncomfortable events, in my opinion). I'm more talking about the times when Michael is trying to be funny (assuming that everyone in the room will be on his wavelength), but ends up offending, or when he is trying to genuinely show how open and progressive he is, but ends up coming off as even more ignorant than he did before (like when he kissed Oscar, where Michael, as a straight man, suddenly thinks that the only way to show he isn't homophobic is by kissing a gay man on the lips). That's what I was talking about when I said that there is almost never any real malice behind his offensive moments.
@yushi5603 жыл бұрын
@@alpha068 I guess I should add that Season One Michael doesn't really fall under this, as he was a straight-ahead prick, more like Ricky Gervais from the original UK show. I made a small change to my original comment regarding that.
@the_imm8rtal_13 жыл бұрын
@@yushi560 do you remember the show correctly? I mean is dumping Pam’s mom really the worst thing he did? I thought that Scott’s Tots is the worst thing he did that affected a lot of people. It is actually painful to watch, but I still try to understand Micheal, even though I would be as angry as those kids if he did the same thing to me. It is really all about the perspective I guess.

The reason so many of these are from season one is because Michael was originally supposed to be unlikable. His his hair and clothes were even designed to make him look sketchy. The reason the show could get away with the kind of jokes it did then are because Michael was the villain of the show. He was molded in the image of David Brent from the UK version. After season 1, writers decided that having a main character so unlikable would be bad for the show, and they softened him from being an oblivious, self-centered jerk to being oblivious, but well-meaning.

How did he grow his hairline back? That’s weird and crazy. He was like mad balding and thinning and then he grew it back seemlessly

I saw someone say on a different video that they gelled his hair back so it looks like his hairline is receding, to fit his “sleazy persona” or something. I’m not entirely sure if that’s true or not but it makes sense to me.
@illuviium3 жыл бұрын
@@leannna you can’t fake a receding hairline. he’s got very very fine hair at his corner in this video and you can see a lot of his front corner scalp. He was mad balding but he either had a transplant or he started like a regime for hair revitalization

I don’t know why I feel like Steve Carell’s parts in other movies just feel unnatural or just very forced. But Michael Scott just seems like a perfect fitted globe for him, like I can’t find any other actor who can play him. One of the only Tv characters you can say this about

It’s a fine line for an actor, whose character is good hearted and likable enough to give them the ability to talk this way. He plays off of tropes and stereotypes, but there isn’t an ounce of hate in him which makes him harmless, and shows he has a heart for the people he doesn’t like which makes him fair; the fact he’s such a dummy makes him likable. In summary, he’s an honest fair dummy. And no matter what he hast to keep the perception of all three of those things up at all times in order to pull these off. When the show was actually on the air in the mid-to-late 2000s there were 50+ year-old professionals who did not get the humor; nothing to do with it not being acceptable vs those people worked in the 70s and first half of the early 80s which in some work environments was like a different planet. It was the people who became professionals in the mid-90s to early 2000s who found this absurdly funny because there was no universe they knew where talking like this would ever be acceptable or tolerated.

I think that's absolutely the perfect reason to bring it back or create a similar Lily funny yet equally offensive show and as they like to say there's an off button on your TV well technically on your remote and you don't have to watch it! It's comedy, not drama or a reality show! Why do you just stare at a blank TV that way you're guaranteed to not be offended although you might still figure out something to complain about
