‘Never forget your Welsh’ was exactly what my great-uncle said when his brother (my grandad) and family (my gran, mum, auntie and uncle) were moving to England because of his work. I was born and brought up in England but of Welsh parentage and I think about this comment a lot. ☺️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

You know sometimes you read historical accounts, of generals and leaders, moving men to such a degree they go against their own instinct and push onto something more. Like the men of Alexander, when he was leading the charge towards the stronghold of the city, he was injured, but rumour spread he was dead, and most armies in the world at that point would falter, shatter and disband. They rallied, and carried on without him achieving his goal. Or how the men at cannae trusted Hannibal to hold, and to hold, and to hold for so long, against a wall of romans, before his plan came to effect and the greater military disaster struck Rome that day. How do they do it? How do these men following them, get inspired to such a degree they’d stare at the thousand romans in front of them and know they was going to be okay. Well I get it now, I’m ready to storm beaches and claim glory for this man.

I’m an American by nationality, but ethnically I’m Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English (tiny bit Italian but so little it’s basically irrelevant). The term “we are still here” hits different reading my DNA test. It fills me with melancholy, sadness, and a deep buried pride hidden somewhere inside me that I cannot explain. I’m glad that modern Britannia has learned to respect and preserve its different ethic groups instead of going the Balkan route. After more than a literal millennium of invasions, be it Roman, Viking, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, or Nazi’s,the fact that Celts are still around at all, let alone have a thriving population of well over 100 million people world wide, and a disproportioned influence on world culture/politics is astounding. Now bring on the obligatory “plastic patty” and “ignorant American” comments, I know you guys can’t help yourselves.

@@-Haiden I know it may seem that way, and trust me I’m no apologist for the UK government, but they aren’t like Russia where they oppress any form of ethnic expression that isn’t Russian. The Welsh, Irish, and Scottish can speak their own language if they wish, they have their own sports teams and culture, they have large degrees of autonomy, England and the UK is a very different Beas than it was in the 18th-20th centuries where they were basically suppressing some ethnic groups while rewarding others so that they could use two separate ethnic groups to oppress each other making easier to rule over both. However, you are the one who lives in the UK so I trust you know what you are talking about.

@@-Haiden I’m just happy that Celtic blood still flows on this earth, the earth needs it. It’s a beautiful culture that’s influenced the world disproportionately to it’s amount of surface area the region takes up in the planet. Modern music, comedy, poetry, literature, folk lore, and country cultures across the world have been shaped by Celtic culture. From Australia, to the US and Canada, to Brazil and Mexico, Celtic culture is present and substantial and the world is better for it. (Not knocking anymore else’s cultures, they are all important and play a role, I’m just happy mine is surviving and thriving given the troubles and near extinction it’s faced)

@@ottovonpoptart5480 my other reply does sound very rude, so I don't mean it that way! But yes, Celtic identity is everywhere. Many (mostly Welsh) people fled to set up little pockets of Welsh speaking communities around the world due to being scared that it could die. If I must be honest, the Welsh and Cornish and also Bretons care the most about their language in comparison with the Scottish and Irish. I advise you, since you have so much history with Celtic nations, to begin learning a language of your choice! I think it could help you connect with your roots more, and also as a Welsh person, it's nice to see people trying to connect with Welsh culture. Don't get me wrong, we hate it when Americans say, "oh I'm Welsh to the 1.8x10-⁴%" but we love it when people try to connect with out language and culture. Who knows, if you ever get a chance, go to Scotland or Ireland or Wales. Celtic languages are dying so we're trying to keep them alive but if you were to go to Wales, Welsh is the most widely spoken Celtic language, so you'll have plenty of practice!
