In conversation with Dr. Michael Shermer, Caltech Theoretical Physicist and Nobel Laureate, Dr. Kip Thorne, reflects on his life and career in theoretical physics, his pursuit of the detection of the long-elusive gravitational waves through the LIGO detector, his relationship and bet with Stephen Hawking, how he came to consult on Carl Sagan’s 'Contact' and Christopher Nolan’s 'Interstellar,' his curious work on black holes, wormholes, and time travel, and what it’s like to go to Stockholm to receive the Nobel Prize.
This Science Salon was recorded in California on February 18, 2018 as part of our Science Salon series of dialogues between Michael Shermer and leading scientists, scholars, and thinkers.

I am the person who asked the question on Facebook about the masses of the black holes before and after coalescence and I appreciate John Rael asking Dr. Thorne the question. The reason I phrased it as "stated by J. A. Wheeler" is that it was stated exactly that way in Wheeler's memoir, "Geons, Black Holes & Quantum Foam". I appreciate Dr. Thorne's clarifying the statement. It's obvious that the statement in terms of mass rather than surface area is more relatable to the general public and, since the LIGO results are stated in terms of mass, is also a consistent way to ask the question when talking about the LIGO results. I had noticed that the large relative errors in the LIGO mass results would make it difficult to confirm the prediction but I had not seen any statement about this in other discussions of LIGO. I thought that perhaps the results might say something about the spin or charge of the black holes since the statement in Wheeler's book refer to "spinless, uncharged black holes".

Can anyone here explain the tesseract scene in Interstellar? I know Kip explained it briefly in his book but I didn't get it completely

No, no! HEISENBERG! The REAL one! Not some TV actor! OK, so he don't look much like Werner. Best he can do.

Dark Matter is so exciting. There is a whole dark universe out there. Dark stars with Dark Planets and a Dark Earth inhabited by Dark People. And we don't even know about each other yet. Imagine how it will be when we can communicate with Dark People
