After reading some of the comments here, I feel that one needs to explain some points here about the reissues that Micheal is talking about: - Something that many don't undestand or get, is the fact that the original analog master tapes have a limited lifespan, and they won't last forever! Their materials will eventually disintegrate, and the magnetic information recorded on the tiny metallic particles will fade away with time! These latest pure analog reissues, are probably the last pure analog recordings we can get that are as close as possible to the original ANALOG recordings because many original master tapes started to show their age, and the record companies who own them are not willing to lend them away anymore! If the original recordings are digital, like most those from the early eighties until today, then they will always be there in the same quality, and they will be reissued again and again with good quality, both on vinyl and on other digital media, but analog recordings converted to digital, will always be sterile and lifeless copies of the real original analog recordings. Only an analog direct copy from an analog master tape to vinyl is worth investing in, both musically, and financially! Analog audio quality is all about getting as close as possible to the original recording. Each additional generation of recording away from the original, will degrade the quality and some of the details will drown in noise! There is no VooDoo there, it's simply the nature of analog sound! - If you have a mediocre or lower mid-range HiFi equipment, you probably won't hear a big difference between an audiophile pressing and a "normal" pressing. But, if you own a higher mid-range to high-end equipment, the difference can be like between day and night, especially when you play back a 45rpm record with its amazing dynamics and resolution! If you have never listened to these recordings on a high-end system, you won't understand why so many people collect and buy audiophile and mint original pressings! - So, if you are happy with a printed poster or a photocopy of a famous painting to hang on your wall, then don't bother buying analog audiophile reissues, and just listen to digital or mass-produced digitally-sourced vinyl reissues! If you are the type who wants an expensive limited facsimile copy of the artwork in order to see the finest details and enjoy the closest possible resemblance to the original painting, then these audiophile reissues are for you! - My explanations above are based on my own experience and opinions. I own thousands of original first pressings and audiophile pressings of classic, jazz, rock and pop albums, and I do own many "normal" reissues as well. I can assure you, that on a good to excellent HiFi system, the differences between vinyl pressings are absolutely huge! Normal pressings and reissues sound ok, but they don't evoke your emotions, a superb audiophile (or even original first pressing) will give you goose bumps, and will bring you right there where the performers are! It is the closest you can get to "being there"!

@@tiredoftheentitled9009An analog copy closer to the source is more true to the original than other types of copies! Analog sound copying is like this, and is totally different than digital copying. I have access to some 2nd and 3rd generation mastertapes, and I have listened to them on a high end reel-to-reel machines, I can tell you without any hesitation, that a 45rpm vinyl copy is practically as a good as as the original master tape! If you haven't listened to such recordings, you cannot claim that they are just "copies" 😉

I didn’t say anything about the quality. What I said was it’s still a copy. No matter which way you spin it and I fully understand the spirit of getting close to the original recording it’s still a copy. All this video and others are doing is killing vinyl record shops whilst reducing the opportunities for a new generation of music listeners. None of these videos are about the music and more about collectors who don’t listen to the music waving their copies around in the air with pride talking about packaging, paper, and all other nonsense but little about the music.

@@bikemike1118I have been to more concerts over the past 30 years than I care to remember. From My Bloody Valentine to Lou Reed, even The Eagles (albeit at gunpoint 😆), I have rarely heard a band that sounds like they are playing in my living room. The studio album and live experience are generally two different sides of the same coin. Of course live albums are another matter, but even then it's not the same for me.

Regarding Music Matters releases or any small label releases, I believe by virtue of being a limited edition release (usually by contract limitations), they need to set a higher price in order to make it profitable for them to release a title. Additionally, most of these companies want to produce the best release possible for our community (God knows we can be a little picky sometimes). And, in order to justify the higher price they spare no expense in its manufacture, packaging, and quality of recording. This of course is the added benefit for audiophiles and a bane of existence for the casual (hesitant) buyer! So I agree with you (obviously, lol) here. Snatch em up quick, they go fast! Otherwise you will find yourself walking around aimlessly, mumbling "Should of bought the damn thing", "It's the wife's fault I didn't", "Kids damn college tuition", "Do I really need food?"..................then end up kicking your poor dog!

Great video. I think with the attention that Chad and co will be placing on UHQR, that series will continue to do extremely well on all fronts. I think you can even look at the small number of the Axis Bold Is Love (Mono) and see that even that will go much higher. People love the first in any series and even more when the pressing number is so low. The stereo version will be a great buy too.

I’ve always had what I believe is the most sensible investment strategy, buy what you know and what you like. Especially important with vinyl. If you truly love it, it doesn’t matter what you’ve paid, you will always love it and appreciate what you’ve got. It’s when you’ve bought it to make money, then bad things can happen. Good video Michael, great advice as usual.

These price increases are crazy…. Many hundreds of Dollars or EURO for oftentimes just half an hour of music 😣. Sure market conditions are always somehow of interest BUT I feel the music itself should be the priority, not potential price increases. Personally I've waited and missed out on a number of titles over the years, but I have to say the "war horses" do get released over and over again. I enjoy the hobby and passion as much as the next guy, but again we are talking about the collectible market. Prices go up - prices go down. Bottom line for me is if it turns into a burden. For the most part (not always of course) only the genuine artifact will stand the test of time in terms of monetary value/collectability. For example original jazz and blues records.

I can recommend to buy 2 or more of what you know is going to be collectible. I have 2 Aqualungs. And a few of the limited edition MFSL’s. Yesterday I was in a record store in Amsterdam and they had a copy of Nilsson Schmilsson for 70 euro’s. Normally I wouldn’t have bought it but now with the crazy prices in the record world today, I know it’s going to be collectible. It’s already more expensive than 70 euro’s on Discogs. The same with Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach on MFSL Supervinyl. Not my thing but I bought 2. It’s still “affordable” but in 2 years it will be a lot more. A few years ago I had to sell a lot of my records. Including a lot of original Blue Notes and all of the Classic Records Led Zeppelin’s. I hope the prices of the records I buy now as investments will go up enough to get those Zeppelins again. Although I still have the first UK or US pressings. And I think I’ll wait till they will get released as UHQR’s someday! Fingers crossed… And a good thing I didn't sell my Music Matters and Analogue Productions Blue Notes because a few years ago nobody wanted them!

This is a very interesting topic for those of us who are not "flippers" but rather buy records for the musical experience. I'm not sure how much I should care about increases in value EXCEPT to the extent I may miss the chance to own a superb pressing at a reasonable price (which I think was the main point of Michael's video). I certainly don't think of records as an investment, since I'm not really planning on selling my collection during my lifetime (though perhaps at a certain age I will need to downsize considerably). If I die before my wife, it would be nice for her to be able to get some money back (and I'm sure people with kids think about leaving a valuable collection to them). And it would be nice from time to time to sell off some titles for a profit to buy different records. But I definitely can't see myself buying records I'm not super interested in just because I think they will go up in value.

Are truly rare and scarce audiophile pressings undervalued at this time? I think so. I was bitching when Santana “Abraxas” Ultradisc One Step hit $750.00 and I didn’t buy one. It’s now over 2k for a sealed copy and some people are asking $2,500.00 plus. In hindsight, it was the first One Step with only an edition of 2,500 according to MoFi. The market is simply nuts! I guess it’s…. “Buy now or cry later”

Although I accept your general point, the prices you quoted were 'asking' not 'selling'. If you look at the sales history for that Classic Physical Graffiti, it's more like £300 over the last year, with a single spike at £650 - and I think that was a sealed copy as I happened to look when I was entering my own copy in the collection database. I'm seeing this a lot for early 90s rock too - CD was dominant and copies can be scarce but seriously £500 for Scenes From the second Storey? The last 6 copes have gone for 100 - 150. A lot of hopeful speculation going on but are these copies selling?

I really think everyone will put an end to his effort on collecting vinyl when space becomes a problem. Everyone should remember that money and space are a real problem in the vinyl world. I am experiencing this as I am buying. All this craziness will end sooner or later because people have the tendency to live in nice places, not archives. :) After this, the selection starts to happen in everyone's house or apartment. People will eventually sell their less favourite albums to make room. Given the fact they appreciate what they buy, they will treat them carefully, especially the collectables. This being said, there is room for decent prices over time even on Discogs. Until then, we buy like crazy people do, because we like and we can. I have no mental problem to spend my money as I please, I am a music listener, not a collector, not a price hunter. This term "audiophile" is overrated and gets people crazy because of its abuse. They just buy more, they are not real audiophiles. :) I enjoy music since I was a very small kid and I enjoy it on CDs and I will surely like it on any kind of media. Now is just another phase for most of us. We reject social media, we reject online metrics, we reject applications' recommendations, etc. We just want to enjoy music. Music quality is bonus in this. If we enjoy more collectibles than music, then, we will end-up unhappy for every purchase, because the wish lists are extremely long and this sets us uncomfortable in the 1st 15 minutes from receiving our packages. :) Buy what you can, search the best price, think if you really can't stand life without it, think if vinyl support is really the way you cannot live without then make the purchase... I think we all do and think the same. 10s of cubic meters of vinyl are not happens, not cool. Is just what makes us happy now. :)

@@bikemike1118 absolutely correct what you say here. But, let’s be honest here. We all know this from many other situations. Same goes for so many levels in our existence, but still we do it. The only thing that happens once in a while is the “next great thing”. And we switch like kids for a new toy. Now, the new toy is a new record to buy. This is the insta-gratification we can have. Our space available, where we live, may change this hobby with something else. Or we go hunting for more expensive turntables, speakers, carteidges, cables, amps, pre-amps... there is always room for new insta-gratifications! 🤣

@@deadquietvinyl true! …Nobody is completely free of this all. That’s fine. It’s a bit like with other „drugs“: if one doesn’t go over the top …it is enjoyable 🥳. And these times with this vinyl mania oftentimes the hunting is probably more thrilling than the possessing. But when I see these shelves stacked with records on some KZfaq channels I always ask myself: WHEN in the owners lifetime can he/she listen to all of these only for more than a single time? It is a bit like with buying more and more clothes …you still can wear only one at a time! And even if your record player has three tonearms…you can only listen to ONE record at a time! I for myself discover details and depth of many recordings only after listening several times. And then enjoy and appreciate them even more…

It's quite clear the audiophile market is on fire. But, in your opinion, how does this, or even does this, affect the vinyl record market for the original pressings released at the time they were recorded. I'm talking about NM or close to it copies of all the classic records in their original form as released. Does the rise of the audiophile market lift demand for the original pressings as well? Maybe not as much as the audiophile pressings being issued now, but does this help with that market?

I ended up buying one, and am very happy I did. It sounds really great. I 100 percent agree with you that if anyone wants it, get it now! Look how much the UHQR Axis: Bold as Love goes for; I'm sure this one could get to that level in a year or two. It seems like you have to pay $250 - $300 for a copy of Aqualung, but that is gonna be the cheapest you ever see it for, moving forward.

While videos like this are mostly put out there as an innocent form of a heads up, there has been enough of a paradigm shift in this hobby that, despite the true intentions of the deliverer (you, Michael, in this case) there are profound and rapid consequences. While you may not be solely the cause of a rapid and extraordinary price increase, whether you like it or not (or acknowledge it or not), what you say is feeding the monster. So, I say this just as something to think about and to reconcile with. All of these videos have influence, it comes from the notoriety of being a figure in a public space.

I have a very good sounding edition, revised by Steven Wilson for 26 Euros. I don't throw myself in front of my Hifi-System because the sound is so awful. 600 euros for a Tommy issue? I have an edition from 2013 with a superb sound (original price 32.00 Euro). For 600 euros I can buy all of The Who albums with a good sound. In this time and age, there's absolutely no reason for any LP recorded today to be below audiophile standards. I understand the time and effort put in some reissues (and I think $100 for the Kind of Blue is fair, alas, I would like $75 without all that package I don't care), but a new recording regular LP should sound amazing at a price between 20-30€. Everything else is speculation and nonsense. Also nonsense is crapy sound records with crappier pressings- that I really don't understand. Are you going to reveal the medium value of your collection one day (on paper)?

The problem is that many of these albums, just like when concert tickets go on sale, are grabbed by professional scalpers who will buy them in bulk - whether under their name , or using those of friends and family - causing the original run to be sold out in a matter of a couple of hours. Then, almost the same day, ,those records will be offered on eBay or Discogs for some outrageous amount. This is why the average music lover who loves to collect for his/her pleasure and not for profit, and who are not watching the computer 24/7, end up either never owning these albums, or if they do, end up paying through the nose for them. Yet another reason why I don't go to concerts anymore. I don't feel like spending half a mortgage payment on any album. And when you buy from these parasites, you encourage them to do it to you again and again.

I love you but I think you've got a bit of chip on your shoulder with the Craft Small Batch releases. ;) Lush Life is still $400+ US on Discogs and the lowest it's ever sold for was $350 US. If you find one for $200 then buy it immediately. They may fluctuate a bit over time but I don't think it'll ever go down as low as $150 US like you're suggesting. They are great releases and only 1,000 copies made. Records are all going up in value these days so suggesting this one will go down to $150 US is impossible.

Knowing that both, musicmatters and classic series, were mastered by same engineer K. Gray, makes me wonder if he just forgot his golden ears at home when he did classic series. On the other hand, there is also BlueNote that may simply blow up the whole mastering by using each metal stamper for like 10000 copies at least, before the new one been used. And if thats true, whats the point of make such pressing to begin with? You bring the best mastering engineer and blow up at the end? Just because it supose to be budget release, but still sell well? If yes, which most people are probably agree with, then this is nothing to do with records or music itself, but pure marketing bs. My own expirience based on Somethin'Else record, which I bought for EUR 29,95 plus shipping, so, cant concider this one as cheap, cos cheap is like EUR 19,95 or even less. For example, I have Leonard Cohen Ten New Songs record that cost me like EUR 16,95 plus shipping and its sounds much better that that one from BN and without K. Gray on the front sticker.

I believe that it does feed the FOMO. We always say that “it's about the music”, but many times we respond to the excitement of the hunt for a record, to the desire to have everything, to know that its value rises, and so on. I think that many times those attitudes do go against the music (buying many albums in a week, how much can you really listen to an album carefully, let alone compare it adequately with other pressings?). I think that sometimes this can be very stressful, cause anxiety and, as Michael says in the video, hurt (in the pocket and emotional health). I think it's healthier to buy the album you want to listen to and enjoy it calmly.
