Sennheiser HD 545 Reference Headphones: Poor Man's Holy Grail? A used pair of Sennheiser HD545 can be an outstanding value. Rivalling Sennheiser's own HD580 headset, the HD545 model can be had for a fraction of the cost. Spacious, lush, and well balanced, these out of production headphones offer a satisfying listening experience.

Mysilentwarrior: Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It really matters to me. This is why we should share info like this! It's actually helpful to people. These headphones in my opinion are as good as the HD600s of today.

From this series in 2003 were HD525. A little later, I took HD580 from New York (but they didn’t linger - they had some kind of unpleasantly biting midrange). Somewhere in 2006-2008 there were two versions of the HD650. Modest treble, the middle is slightly synthetic, but the main problem is the dominant mid-bass, when the double bass sounded - it clogged all the lower mids. And then I got Beyerdynamic....

Thank you! Man, this was warm and relatable to watch. I got my HD545s in 1998 (20 years ago) when I was 13 (yeah I was lucky) and I will always feel nothing but love and admiration for them. Being a kid and getting true audiophile level sound quality back then, was one of the best things during my next 10 years period of my life. Then I switched to newer Sennheiser’s, but each change would be either minor upgrade or somewhat different, or even worse (like hd700 which I still believe are Sennheiser’s fiasco) The interesting thing is that HD545 as far as I know were made in late 80s but they still can easily compete with today’s top audiophile line series by just being slightly behind, which is just mind blowing. They are very neutral and their sound signature is similar to HD600 but with wider soundstage equivalent to hd650. They are bit lower in resolution compared to 6 series or above, but then again, the sound signature is still one the best I’ve ever heard from the headphones, even to this day. I still have them, they still work, just needs all soft parts to be replaced, because they dissolved almost completely over the years. And even though I won’t use them as my primary headphones anymore, I will never sell them. It brings a smile on my face just by looking at them alone when I visit my home where I left them and listening to old cd’s through them brings me back to my warm childhood for a while. Have a good listening! These are from list of Sennheiser’s masterpieces.

I've also buying HD535 yesterday. And It so fuc*ing Amazing. The previous owner, change old cushions and headband to HD580/HD600 replacement parts. Also remove film institute Cans to easier Airflow. So Incredibly Cool.

Imo the late 80s/early90s HD 560 Ovation I and II are the best Vintage Sennheiser. The HD545 are great headphones too!

They are 150 ohm, not 300 ohm. Nice video mate, might have to pick up a pair as i'm collecting the whole 600 series.

I just Picked up a pair from a goodwill outlet store for less than a buck. sometime the right cable needs to be wiggled in headphone. I feel like I can wear these for hours where as my 380's give me the feeling that I need to pop my ears after 30 mins or so. I'm really digging the sound.

Not to be insulting but really to just be informative and add to the discussion but the HD stands for Headphone and Dynamic. Thus why the Orpheus estats have the "HE" prefix. Oh, and I love the review.

Of course, and while I haven't heard those headphones myself I've actually had them recommended to me as HD 580/600 alternatives that often go for way cheaper than those.

They are definitely a TERRIFIC substitute for the HD600 model. I have done a side by side comparison and there is so little difference that I would say they are essentially the same! Maybe SLIGHTLY more low end in the HD545. Slightly.

Groovy. That house is indeed on fire! :) I've got 2 sets of these I purchased original in the 1990's... and of course the foam just evaporated from old age, even though they didn't get much use. I've got replacmement foam for the earpieces and headband on order from China. The cable plugs have been a pain since near the start - with my set dropping out one or the other from contact issues between the plugs and the contact springs inside. Whats the right solution? I'm up for your method of replacing the cable - but do they have 3.5mm plug versions? Who sells them?
@MichaelCoughlanmusic
@MichaelCoughlanmusic 6 жыл бұрын
Excellent. They are terrific. Thanks for watching Minok. I found a link for the cable with a 3.5 plug: www.headphone.com/products/sennheiser-hd-580600-replacement-stock-cable

Awesome. I'd seen some posts that the issue could well be the small spring inside the body where the prong on the plug engages. So I'll have to try that first before I spring for a new cable, as I'm pretty sure the cable isn't bad - so unless the new cable plug tips are a bit wider, my crackle/drop out wont get fixed by new cable. Thanks.

@MichaelCoughlanmusic

From memory there is a small, black tab on the underside of the headband at each end. You have to CAREFULLY remove ONE of them to slide out the old sponge/cushion and slide in the new one. There was a video here on YT showing the process for the HD 600 or 580 or one of the other models, but the process is the same for the 545! Luck!

@@MichaelCoughlanmusicThank you so much! bought this on eBay and its wonderful, just this afternoon the replacement headbands and earpads came, immediately tried to remove them. I watched an HD600 replacement video and tried on this, I broke the black tab and scratch it up, pretty bummed out haha.. but fixed it with super glue, just wondering how can I safely remove it in the future, then I came here, thank you, man!

I personally think that the HD 545 and HD 565 sound better than the HD 580 Don't get me wrong the HD 580 are a good headphone but the HD 545 and 565 have a much better soundstage and clarity and much less clamp on your head feeling much comfier. This 5 series of headphone from the 90's in my opinion are the best Sennheiser produced.

Calibra Lad Awesome CL! I agree! I can an even say they rival the HD650 set I have as well! And you’re also right about the looser ‘clamp factor’. Thanks for stopping by!

How do you pull out the cables so easily? I can not pull them out and the phones seem to have no screws :(. I'm trying to replace the cable in order to fix the loose contact.
@MichaelCoughlanmusic

The cables pull out by hand on the HD545 set. I don't know which model you have so make sure it's the same before you try to pull them out!

Michael Coughlan It says HD 545 reference on the right side. It also looks like yours. But even with much force, I can't pull the cables out. I wonder if it is possible that they got stuck somehow.

Money took over the sound quality, now you pay insane money for synthetic sound, guys! If you want THE best sound, seek for : beyer dt 48 older models (S, A, E versions in that order) pioneer monitor 10 (older model) If you are lucky, person doesnt know how good they are and you can get them for 20-80$ And dt48 is the most honest hp you can find, it will reveal just how bad your sistem is and it will make you spend money on good amp (thats a "downside" lol)
