Back in the 70's, Monty Python did a satirical bit on the Krays calling them the Piranha Brothers, Doug and Dinsdale. It featured an interview with one of their victims and the interviewer asked him if it was true that one of them nailed his tongue to a coffee table. The victim was obviously still afraid of them and replied, " Yes but I deserved it"

"Well, one day, I was sittin at 'ome, threatenin' the kids, when I look out the 'ole in the wall and I sees this tank drive up. And one of Dinsdale's boys gets out, all nice and friendly like and says Dinsdale wants to have a word with me. So he chains me to the back of the tank and takes me for a scrape round to Dinsdale's. And Dinsdale's there in the conversation pit with Doug, Charles Paisley (the baby crusher), and two film producers and a man called Kierkegaard who just sat around bitin' the heads off whippets. And Dinsdale says, "I hear you've been a naughty boy, Clement," and he splits me nostrils open and saws me leg off and pulls me liver out and I say, "My name's not Clement," and he loses his temper and nails me head to the floor." "He nailed your head to the floor?" "At first, yeah."

There are some good documentaries floating around on KZfaq about the Krays too. They are from the 90's or early 2000's I think and there are interviews with lots of their associates who were still alive at the time, including people like Freddie Foreman and Albert Donohue who was probably their main enforcer. Fascinating pair. An interesting subject from Michael here, as usual!

As always, an entertaining and informative vid Mr. Franzese. Thank you. A very famous author named David Cornwell, better known by his pen name John le Carré (Spy who Came in From the Cold, Tailor of Panama, The Night Manager), grew up in a broken household, and his dad Ronny Cornwell had been jailed for insurance fraud and was a known associate of the Kray twins.

I used to be fascinated by the Krays, one of my old girlfriends was a South London Richardson (her grandma had stories for days) However, finding out they used to procure young boys for politicians somewhat takes the shine off their legacy. Love your videos Micheal.

I'm an American amateur Cosa Nostra buff, but because my mother's maiden name is Dillinger, as in my grandfather was a second cousin to John Dillinger, the infamous bank robber & first person the FBI ever labeled "Public Enemy No. One, I also took an interest in The Kray Twins & The Firm, & while I'm not defending their actions WHATSOEVER... Their former Firm members did provide the distinction that by "young boys," they actually meant young 'men,' 18, 19 yrs old, no? I know Big Albie Donoghue once said that, at least.

I've been doing research in my family tree and I live in Bristol and my ancestors were part of a crime family in Bristol back in the 1700s. They committed majority of their crimes in daylight due to the fear they gave to people. Just having our surname back then automatically made you guilty. It was pretty interesting to read about and a local museum has some of their info about their crime group. Not quite the level of the krays but it was still pretty cool to find out. I do have a letter from Reggie kray though

one of the best stories about the Kray twins in my opinion is about when Ronnie was serving time for stabbing a member of the Watley Streeters (a rival gang from East London) in an infamous pub brawl. A year later in 1958 Ronnie was sent to prison for the incident but his mental health went downhill fast whilst he was inside and he was eventually transferred to a Mental Hospital in Long Grove, Surrey. Once Reggie discovered his brother's whereabouts he jumped in a car with a couple of others and drove down for a visit. He arrived at the hospital and went inside to see his brother Ronnie, leaving the other guys in the car. Apparently he reappeared moments later, jumped straight into the car and drove off again, with the other guys in the vehicle slightly confused as to his hasty visit and their reasonably quick departure. Nobody spoke for a few minutes, so one of the passengers eventually felt they had to say something - "Was everything alright, Reg?" he asked .... "I ain't Reg, I'm Ron." came the immediate reply. When Reggie had walked in to see his twin brother, they had quickly swapped clothes and Ronnie, pretending he was his brother, walked straight out the front door of the hospital he was supposed to be serving his time at! Meanwhile Reggie sat in the hospital for 20 minutes or so, enough time for Ronnie to get well clear, and then he just stood up and said "I'm Reggie so I'm leaving now!" and he just walked out himself! The staff/guards could not stop him because he was indeed Reg and he had no conviction. Of course the guards were not happy but they didn't really want it to get out how badly they had messed up. They called Reggie and tried to get him to bring his brother back but Ronnie stayed on the run from prison for about 6 months! He then returned and simply served out the remainder of his sentence. Can you imagine if that had happened these days? Crazy!

The story of the Mafia's struggle getting a foothold in Britain due to the laws and the Firms is a really very interesting and under-discussed part of the history between our nations ...as for the links between celebrities and gangsters, the two professions appeal to very similar mentalities - government, banking and business, too... narcissism, control freaks, insecurity/anxiety, mental instability, the love of "personal legend", the desire for money and influence or to change harsh personal circumstances, proximity to vice etc etc Great video, as ever - love and respect from London UK

My dad's uncle was a bad seed. His parents immigrated to Detroit from Glasgow, Scotland in the late 1920s. Yes, his father was an abusive alcoholic and he grew in a poor crime ridden neighborhood, however, he was wild. My grandad, his brother in law, owned a ranch. He gave him responsibility taking care of a goat. He tried to drown the goat. He also stabbed a teenage friend of his. While in the army he robbed the army payroll and was sent to federal prison. After prison he formed a biker gang that tried to rape my aunt, but he stopped them. (The only admirable thing He ever did). He tried to kill my grandmother, his own sister. He robbed the proceeds of a major stadium in LA in 1968. He pimped out his wives for drugs. He assassinated people with shotguns. He got kicked out of the Hells Angels. He rode with the Diablos. In the end he died in prison in his early 50s. The dumbest thing my grandad ever did was teach him how to shoot a gun.

Great Video Michael very well done you definitely tried to cover all of the bases on the Kray's. I did a lot of research on them just out of curiosity and it's crazy how they didn't go down earlier in their lives! The things that they did without being careful and their messiness I was shocked that they stayed out of prison as long as they did! I found it interesting that both twins were boxers in their early life and some say that Reggie was really good and could have turned professional! Ronnie on the other hand had a really bad temper and he didn't have the patience to become really good and his temper got the best of him in the ring! I think after their Boxing career was over is when they started going down hill! Between the alcohol and possibly drugs they started getting crazier and crazier and well you know what eventually happened! Anyway peace out and nicely done God bless you and your family brother stay safe! Peace!

They were nonces. They got away with it for so long because they had dirt on all kinds of people in power. Here's a reply to someone's comment that was deleted that might interest you: Got an email for a reply to a comment I made in a thread on this video about the Krays being into trafficking young kids - which they did do, a lot of the time for the elite, and that this is one of the reasons they got away with their crimes for such a long time. The person in the reply asked me "so the American mob was involved with child trafficking?" but i can't find it. Guessing that it was deleted because people don't want to know the truth about the mafia and some of the shadier sides of the rackets they were involved in. Read about Robert DiBernardo - he was targeted by the feds for trafficking in porn, including the illegal kinds, relative to the question I am replying to. Also look into the fact that the mob ran/extorted/"protected" the gay bars and gay hangouts in general in NYC during the time of Stonewall and the riots and all that. There was a bouncer but I can't find his name - he and others were accused of trafficking/pimping by local kids, usually runaways, many of them runaways, and this particular bouncer was an associate of the Genovese family. Another key player in this was a man called Ed "Skull" Murphy (not to be confused with a wrestler of the same name). It's hard to find info on him via Google but he was involved with the bars and was involved in pimping out kids too. Pretty safe bet that this comment will be deleted just as the original comment was, but this is an important part of mob history that people should know about. They were and still are liars, with a well-oiled PR machine. Don't forget that they got away with so much of their racketeering because J. Edgar Hoover refused to acknowledge their existence and instead went after political radicals, mostly black folks (i.e. Black Panther Party). Why is this? Because the mob had pictures of Hoover. Even Michael Franzese admits this. How did they obtain such blackmail information on people in high places? Through people like Roy Cohn - lawyer to many mobsters, gay, into kids and who ran an elaborate blackmail scheme which compromised many politicians, lawyers, judges - anyone you can imagine that was in power, Roy Cohn would have had dirt on them if they were dirty, and he was tight with the mob. He made a lot of money from the mob and not just in legal fees. Oh, and the mob didn't deal drugs either, right? Even though Luciano was a part of setting up the original French Connection and literally had heroin processing plants in Sicily during his exile. But I suppose that that all died with him though, eh? Despite countless prosecutions over the decades. Criminals are criminals and they will make money in whatever ways that they can. Some individual mobsters may have had certain personal morals, and the organisations themselves may profess to have certain moral codes that must be abided by, but is John Gotti going to turn away a big, fat briefcase (let alone envelope!) full of cash because it might have come from illegal trafficking in drugs, humans, p*rn or whatever else? You'd have to be very naive to believe that. In fact, DeBernardo was quite close to Gotti himself. Anyway, enjoy the comment while it lasts because it'll be deleted. Even though we are speaking on the channel of an ex-mobster, he still wants to protect the image of his former organisation inasmuch as he doesn't want to be associated with what DiBernardo was doing, not to mention the pimps who operated around the gay scene in NYC and kicked up to the mob, such as Ed "Skull" Murphy and others.

I must admit (and believe me, this isn't a boast), I met Reggie many years ago in unfortunate circumstances. My life was very different a few decades back and I ended up in real trouble. Reggie knew I was potentially facing a long time in prison, and he took me to one side and give me pearls of wisdom and dos and don'ts that helped give me through that time without a scratch -both physically and mentally. He was a handful back in the day, but when I met him he'd done a long, long time, and I remember him as a true gentleman. Just a footnote; to my surprise he was actually quite small in height, which is very different to the impression that the media projects.

One major mistake that the Tom Hardy film made about the Krays was about them swearing. They didn’t like swearing and would rarely swear. They were actually well spoken. The East end of London was also meant to be much safer during that period.

I literally just replied to someone with a comment almost exactly like yours. If the Richardson's didn't finish them before the law did, the Adams family certainly would have. Both groups were absolutely brutal. And the Adams family being Irish were able to and often did bring in sleepers from Ireland to do hits for them. No one knew where they were going to be shot from. Patsy is an absolute psycho too who everyone was terrified of.

Violet Kray was half Romani, Romani doesn't mean she was Romanian, thought I'd just clear that up. my 3 great uncles grew up in steubenville, ohio. they learned how to deal cards as teenagers in backwoods gambling houses in northern kentucky and parts of west virginia eventually becoming illegal casino bosses at a very young age. they had to keep one eye on the table action and another on the lookout for police and revenuers who would raid the joints LOL. eventually, uncle robert and uncle freddie made their way made their way to havana in i believe either 1950 or 1951 to work in the legal casinos in cuba at the time. while they were there an into an old friend, ed levinson, who previously in the 1930's owned most if not all the illegal gambling houses in kentucky where my uncles worked before he moved to miami and then las vegas in the early 1950's. ed invited them to come to las vegas and work for him. eventually they became casino gaming consultants for legal and illegal casinos all over the world. specifically, my uncle robert became one of the most renowned teachers of the casino games along with his brother freddie. many dealers and executives got their start at uncle roberts casino dealing school in las vegas, one of the very first legit gaming schools. a few years before my uncle freddie passed, the kray twins movie came out that starred tom hardy. i knew my uncles were living in london in the early 60's and just on the off chance i asked my uncle freddie if he had ever crossed paths with the twins. he looked at me in a way that i've never seen.... wide eyed and almost scared. his answer, "did i know them? they were THE CRAZIEST, whacked out guys i've ever been around". now this is coming from someone who ran beside some of the most notorious criminals all over the world LOL. that's how notorious the kray twins were!

The Krays had an image of "East End boys done good" but they were largely bullies, parasites, and, unfortunately, Ronnie was known to (ahem) like young boys. Their appeal came from the fact that they were twins and that they had this aura about them which carried their name around London. But, they weren't the top guys in London, and their story is one of excess, laziness, arrogance, and eventually a lump of bird (that's prison for our American cousins).

Pretty good video. You got a couple of facts wrong though, one of them being, they didn't get separated when sent to prison (at first) they spent quite a few years un-separated, but eventually Ronnie was convinced to go to Broadmore (by his brother too) because his mental illness made him struggle in prison. I think the paranoia got to him, and he really did need full time medical help. They was together for quite a few years though, I don't think they got separated until the mid 70's, and they got imprisoned in the late 60's. There is also a guy they was involved with called Freddie Foreman, he was a highly respected criminal, he got rid of the body of Mcvitie and Frank Mitchell. He pulled of some of the largest robberies the UK has ever seen (think Lufthansa level robberies, but bigger, and he was involved with a few) this guy was highly respected. And far more of a successful criminal than the Kray twins. If the Krays where like Scarpa or DeMeo, Foreman was more like your father Sonny Franzese, or Meyer Lanskey, not just a feared psycho, who based his criminal career on pure fear and violence. He actually had respect from people. He would have never Ratted on anyone, and he was respected by people in all walks of life. He was no bully (although a multiple killer), but he was a very clever villain and is still alive today.

I’ve hung around with my brother in law for 20 years being friends but just last week I had enough of his mental issues and walked away from being friends with him. My sister will have to contend with him now cause he has no friends. No one wants to be around a disrespectful drunk.
