Turns out it's super easy to get around the region lock on the Nintendo 64. So I ended up modifying one of these things to play both Japanese and North American games.

It’s absolutely absurd that it’s cheaper to import a boxed N64 from Japan than it is to buy a used one in the US. I 100% believe it, because scalpers and resellers have ruined the retro market for US buyers. Apparently a lot of Japanese game sellers are running out of local stock because they export so much of their stock overseas because they can sell it for more cash. And even then, it’s still cheaper than buying the US equivalent in the US.

The worst part is I buy Japanese exclusives and those are still cheaper than buying the plain common US version a lot of the time... It's nuts.

@@tspawn35 I hear ya. I was just at a convention and I was shocked at the price difference between Japanese and US. We’re talking like a 800% difference in some cases. I’m lucky enough to have bought most everything I could want for the N64 a decade ago, but it still sucks for anyone who wants to re-live their childhood nowadays, since they’re essentially being forced to pay a premium…

I'm American and moved to Japan 8 years ago and it is definitely cheaper, especially if you live here and know where to look. Lots of JP sites or shops where tourists go are terrible. Its the same with pretty much anything here though. Being a collector for years I know what stuff is worth and Games, cards, figures, merch etc is all dirt cheap here and is worth way more outside Japan. I don't even charge crazy prices. I charge people under what its worth but even then the value of some JP games in the US is still much higher than what it is here in japan and so even just charging below whats stuff is worth is still like a 5-10x what you paid bc the stuff is sooo cheap here I have a big retro game collection and all my in the box Super famicom games and N64 and Gameboy etc I've never paid more Than $10 for any of them. It gets to the point of where FOMO does not exist if you live here bc the stuff is everywhere and that is why its so cheap. I've never seen or heard of any place here running low on stock. Maybe on a website or some shop in a tourist area but in general no. There is SOOOO much stock of everything here.

@@CaptainApathetic Except it's not, PAL region N64's are perfectly capable of displaying 60Hz (which you can do with a cartridge region adapter, or a flashcart), no real mods required. Just bypassing the region lockout chip. They'll output PAL color encoded 60Hz 240p, with an RGB mod it'll be RGB60 instead. There's ZERO reasons why they decided to have a region lock there, the machine can do it, CRT TV's sold in the EU were also sync unlocked and could sync 50-60Hz since the early 80's as a requirement (for anything that wasn't a tiny portable TV). Hence PAL60, NTSC 4.43 (import media), and RGB60. (I'm a huge CRT nerd, repairs, mods, history etc) It's all just market control BS.

the US PSU's for N64 have an additional resistor (27 Ohm, capable of withstanding 120V) located at R2. Simply populate the empty R2 slot with the resistor that's in the US PSU's.

Right, JP is 100V, not 110-120
@riggles
@riggles 10 ай бұрын
@@VilifiedOne It'll work, but the additional energy dissipates as heat inside the transformer, heat lowers the lifespan of the capacitors in the PSU (which honestly need replacement at this point, 20-25 years is about the time I would consider maintenance recapping, been recapping all my systems and power supplies this past year). So It'll probably just work without failure for shorter than it otherwise would, since it's so many years still you can't really tell. I still think worst case scenario your caps die a bit earlier and you're not getting a stable enough voltage to your system with time, resulting in more video+audio interference or the console not starting.

N64 can take psus from any reigon. I've been using a Japanese system in the UK with a local psu (thats 240V!) for years with zero issues. Just to be clear the N64 is a special case and most systems would go boom.
@riggles
@riggles 10 ай бұрын
@@King_K_Rool_ It's not a special case, it's the exact same with any system that has an external power brick. The powerbrick is what accepts the mains voltage and spits out 5-12v voltages used by the console. Only difference is that the bricks accept different AC voltages. Consoles accept the same 5-12v. PS2 slim, Wii, SNES, NES, everything works like that. Consoles with internal power supplies like the PS1, Saturn or Dreamcast need the PSU replaced/modded. The same thing just that it's now built into the console housing.

SNES US and Japan are also trivial to convert, you just need an adapter. NES/Famicon is actually interesting, because the Famicon had more pins, allowing for e.g. for the cartridge to have extra audio hardware. Some other interresting thinks are the microphone on controller two. Ignoring that: Most games can be played with a simply adapter. Some games even shipped with an internal adapter.

Interestingly enough, there were actually two version of the original Pokémon Stadium released. The original version (the one your playing, called Pocket Monsters Stadium or sometimes called Pokémon Stadium 0) that was only released in Japan and the final version that was released in Japan and internationally (Japan called this release Pokémon Stadium 2 even though international Pokémon Stadium 2 was actually the second game that included generation 2 Pokémon). Because Pocket Monsters Stadium was originally going to be for the N64 Disk Drive, when it was actually released on cartridge it only contained 64 or so of the original 151 Pokémon. This is why Japan along with the rest of the world got a version that was more complete with all the 151 Pokémon included. This was because back in the day there were no online updates to games and the updated version had to be sold again. In Pokémon Red and Green’s case, they were sold as new versions. The new Red and Blue that Japan and the rest of the world got were just essentially a bug fix and sprite changes to the original Japan Red and Green. In the case of Mario 64, the second release was just a quiet release that not much people knew about and was just fixing glitches that helped people beat the game faster (sorry speed runners 😂).

What step-down transformer did you use, and can you use the same thing to power a Famicom?

It is quite fascinating how much surplus is in Japan. Also, I don't think they collect or care about classics as much as Americans do? Some loose or jewel case only Famicom Disk System games are $50+ in U.S. ebay, but I was able to get a bunch of complete FDS games for under $40, including an "unsealed but unused" copy of Mysterious Murasame Castle. Did you know FDS games have high quality mini bound paperback books for the instruction manuals? And that they include a set of replacement label stickers if your game gets damaged/faded or you reload a copy of the game on a blank disk from a kiosk? So awesome.

Hey Michael questions...... Sense the JP market got the N64 DD and not the expansion pack upgrade does it not work for the Japanese consoles? Or does it work and you can use both accessories with the Japanese console. Also you should show us how to hack a Nintendo 64 DD sense you got a JP console maybe there's a way to make it use English. And see if its still online. There internet pass thing they had for Japan.

You'd have to remove the Jumper pack anyway if you want to install the Expansion pack, which is basically mandatory for games such as Perfect Dark if you wan to take advantage of all the game's features.

Had (back in the day, along with many other games) Mario 64 and Pokemon Stadium - in the UK Pokemon Stadium that we got was actually Pokemon Stadium two in Japan as UK never got the original, not sure if this was the same in the US?

I commented something about Portal 64 a few hours ago, and it either didn’t go through, or disappeared (maybe deleted). Not sure what happened lol. Maybe Portal 64 is the subject of the next N64 video, and I guessed it correctly, but it was deleted to keep it a surprise🤔? Haha 😂 , anyway, if it didn’t go through for some reason, I recommend checking it out. It’s pretty cool! 🙂

I checked in the spam comments section and didn't see any comment from you there, so maybe your first comment didn't go through or something. I will say the video isn't about Portal 64 because this is the first time I'm hearing about it and... wow, this looks super cool! I'll have to see if I can cover this at some point!

That Jumper Pak is just a RAMBUS "dummy" slot since you have to install in pairs or terminate the other slot......RAMBUS was insanely fast for 1996 when this console came out. I didn't know until like 10 years ago N64 used RAMBUS. For a while it was insanely faster than any other memory type.....remember the first Pentium 4 systems that only supported RAMBUS? I Remember friends that has this config blow my system out of the water and didn't know why at the time......here it was RAM speed....haha
