Sadly, after a long battle against pulmonary fibrosis, my grandfather passed away on October 27, 2019, just five days shy of his 91st birthday. He was a man of "velvet and steel": a lifelong farmer who lived through the Great Depression and World War II, eventually starting his own farm and becoming one of the largest suppliers of canhouse tomatoes and peppers in the state of New Jersey. He was also a loyal and energetic member of our community, devoting much of his time to making our small town a better place to live. Loving father of four children, ten grandchildren (which I am blessed to have been one of), and six great-grandchildren. He was the glue that held our family together. He was my idol and my inspiration, the one who shaped me into the person I am today. I hope to make him proud by carrying on his legacy and keeping our family's agricultural heritage alive. Hard to believe he is gone, but it is comforting to know that he is our guardian angel now. We will miss you Pop-Pop, but we know you're having a blast up there farming with Mom-Mom once again. May you rest in peace.
My grandfather may no longer be with us, but I now own his JD 60 and Ford 4000 and am working to restore them in his memory, a little bit at a time. Before I moved away to school, my uncle and I dragged the 60 out from behind the barn and brought it around front. It now sits in the stone near the shop, and is much more accessible and easier to work on. The engine has been soaking in diesel and PB Blaster the past few months, so the next step is to get it broken loose. I bought a decent pair of 11x38 Firestone tires on double-bevel rims off of a JD 50 parts tractor, and will be mounting them up to the 60 and removing the seized brake drums so we can roll the tractor around the yard and break the engine loose. I plan to make a video on that as well.
In this video, I give a much more thorough overview and a closer look at the 60, assess some of the parts that are damaged or missing due to years of neglect, and discuss some of my plans for the restoration as we move forward with it. Enjoy.

@@MichaelTJD60 You are sure brave I was already saying 'nope' in my head when I saw the condition on the shifter! A word of warning however is that you need a good welder when having the rear axle housing fixed, as a welder myself I can say cast iron is very hard to weld on because any major fluctuations in heat can see more cracks forming in the base metal.

The 60 is a great tractor my grandpa bought one from a neighbor after it had been in a shed for several years and restored it. It was the first tractor I ever drove and he taught me how after giving one condition I had to get it started. The relationship you had with your grandpa sounds almost identical to mine. Can't wait to watch this restoration progress.

The first tractor I ever drove by myself was a 60 as well. I had shifted and steered a few tractors riding on my grandfather's lap as a little kid, but being able to drive a friend's 60 by myself at 10 years old was one of the happiest days of my life.

MichaelTJD60 I’ll never forget driving it around the driveway that day I learned. I’ll also never forget getting told on all the 2 cylinder John Deeres when your sitting still put it in neutral and let the clutch out since it’s better for them that way.

I’m sorry for your loss. My father passed from IPF also. It’s a terrible disease and I hated seeing him go from a strong 65 year old man that could do anything to struggle to make it 4 steps to the bathroom. This is gonna be a great restoration project and I can’t wait to see your progress on it.

Thank you Brad. It sure is a terrible disease and right now there is no cure for it. It was awful seeing my grandfather deteriorate so quickly over these past two years from the strong fighter he was...even in failing health, he'd do everything he could to remain active and energetic. He did great in physical therapy, but once they sent him home, his health declined very quickly. I'm just glad he is at peace now.

Sounds a lot like me and my grandpa, we live right next door to each other and go there every so often (I'm 13 right now) and I will help him in the shop with restoring his old cars and trucks, right now it's a 32 for sedan that he has had forever, was in California and survived the big earthquake in the 80s I think and now almost running..well it is, it's just finishing the details. He served in the Navy and I'm proud of that (well of him), when it's summer I'll hope on his Ford 3000 and he will get on the JD 310a backhoe and we'll both go out and disk. Then later in the year we'll get on the backhoe and bring in some trees and split them for firewood, at the end of the day we will usally barbeque some salmon, steak, or tri-tip with special seasoning which tastes super good and his special way of smoking the meat, while it's cooking we will hang out in the shop together, I'm and definitely grateful to have him with me. Sorry you lost your grandpa, I can't even begin to think about losing my papa (that is what I call my grandpa)

Very cool price of history. I can’t wait to see it when it is done.I hope you have good luck restoring it. Me and my grandfather are restoring a Ford jubilee. It has been in our family for a long time. It was my grandfathers as a kid. Hope you enjoy it when it is done being restored!!!

Good luck with the Jubilee project, that's definitely a tractor to keep in the family. I thought about buying an 8N or a Jubilee just to tinker with, but decided to just restore the 4000 instead.

Masseys are great tractors. The one in the picture was our 1130 which was the "big" tractor that took over tillage duties after the 60. It's still being used on a farm down the road from us, maybe I'll buy it back someday.

You would probably be time, but definitely money ahead to buy a mostly complete parts tractor. Having a donor tractor there, to just take whatever you need from, is worth way more than hunting for, and buying parts individually
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 4 жыл бұрын
For sure. I've been keeping my eye out for a 60 parts tractor...they're just not easy to find in my neck of the woods, and most of the ones I've found are missing a lot of the parts I need.
