The instrument that you referred to as a "recorder" is actually a traditional Japanese instrument dating from the 16th century called a Shakuhachi. It's a type of flute made out of bamboo.

Thanks for reacting to this and tacking on the concert footage for context. Yuko has a follow-up video to this tutorial only it's how to harmonize Senbonzakura, unfortunately that one is only in Japanese with no English subtitles. Yuko is licensed to teach music for High School and Junior High.

Shigin singer Yuko Suzuhana (who had been elected Miss Nico Nama in 2011) She started with shigin at the age of 5 This is from WagakkiBand Premium Symphonic Night Vol.2 Live & Orchestra in Osaka-Jo Hall February 2020. One nigh show only. Evanescence vocalist Amy Lee joined WagakkiBand as a special guest. The song before this they performed "Bring me to life". The acoustics in Osaka-Jo Hall are very suitable for orchestras, so they held the concert there even though the WGB is in Tokyo. This song is about the westernization of Japan, which happened during the Meiji Restoration. Despite having an upbeat, oriental track, the song contains rather dark themes, mentioning guillotines and ICBMs. In addition, the lyrics state things such as "Songs of lament go unheard" and "This is a banquet inside a steel jail cell". The bamboo flute "shakuhachi" played by Daisuke Kaminaga is extremely difficult to play. Not an unusual comment after practicing a month is "I got a clear tone" Highly recommend the 2017 version of "Episode 0". You can find it on the YT channel of "CC W" with English subtitles.

Yuko's mother taught piano and singing, so that's where she learned that. One of her mother's students taught kenshibu, what I understand to be the combined name for kenbu, the art of sword dancing, and shibu, the art of fan dancing. Yuko has done at least one performance where she alone fronts an orchestra and does performances with Daisuke Kaminaga, the shakuhachi player (the recorder), and Kiyoshi Ibukuro, the koto player (the vertical harp/zither) where the trio is called Hanafugetsu. I found Wagakki Band pretty early in my quest to find new music, and I'm glad especially because of charming, endearing, skilled Yuko.

I found this band only recently (regrettably), and was immediately convinced that this band has the highest level of musicianship (musicality/virtuosity) and showmanship (visual/theatrical effects) Actually, I think this band is among the best fusion bands ever existed, and the very best when it comes to originality and showmanship. Moreover, they can play so effortlessly with smiles on their faces! Simply amazing and entertaining!

One big strength for the Wagakki Band is that Yuko and pretty much every other member in the band has extensive KZfaq content including a lot of non-MV videos. Other Japanese acts should really step up their KZfaq game.

Thanks; I loved the reaction and I loved the lesson from Yuko. This was fascinating to watch all around. Very cool! I have been a fan of Wagakki band for a while, and I think there are some interesting parallels between the Japanese Shigin style as used by Yuko and the Russian "white singing" used by Irina from Grai. Yuko Suzuhana is one of those amazing people. She assembled the band, is a principal songwriter, is an expert in a style of Asian chanting poetry and is even a sword expert and hosts a popular TV show!

Just my opinion, I actually see quite a few parallels between Yuko and Miku Kobato of Band-Maid, down to both women having a brother (I believe they're part of the generation where it became increasingly common for families to have only one child) with differences in dynamics - Yuko is the older sister to her brother while Miku is eleven years younger than her half-brother. Don't know if the KPop Wiki webpage entry from Billy Murphy is correct about Miku's dad being a dentist and mom a nurse (the info was from a K-Pop website that deals with other East Asian acts and already some of the info was inaccurate - it mentioned she had a younger brother), but if it was true then Miku would have started life off in the same economic bracket as Yuko did (Yuko's mom taught music while her dad was an architect), before falling off of it when Miku's father left. I think we'll be seeing some more Wagakki Band and Band-Maid react videos here in the future.

@@pugnaciousdeliciososa2191 , this is good analysis by you. I saw an interesting short interview with Yuko and her brother where he was teasing her for as always being their mother’s favorite and having to always be perfect at music, and she replied that being a musician was never her dream; she wanted to go into medicine. Watch here for some more Wagakki very soon. 😊👍

Yuko is also a vocal teacher. "Senbonzakura" is the big hit of Hatsune Miku, the singing hologram whose voice is generated by Vocaloid. With very interesting and serious text. The cover of this song started Wagakki Band's great career. From the Japanese female singers I also recommend AIMER, gifted with an extraordinary voice, and the now-defunct female trio Kalafina.

Hello Miki-san from Tokyo! Thanks so much for your excellent reaction and brilliant analysis to this song, especially to Yuko's vocal in detail. I've been looking forward to knowing, who would refer to Yuko's tutorial video about ''和楽器バンド風千本桜の歌い方''. It means 'How to sing ''Senbonzakura'' in Wagakki Band style'. There are lots of reaction videos to the song, but till now none refered to the tutorial despite that it's quite a good one by Yuko herself with English subtitles. You did it first. I'm very glad to that. Yes, Yuko is a great teacher, too as you said. I'm sure you are the same. In addition your voice is very beautiful and vocal ability is great. Thanks for checking out Wagakki Band! It's unfortunate that so many fans direct reactors to this clip first. Honestly, it's far from the best look at them--Amy Lee was great once but she is not up to their standard, and they had to hold back to avoid overwhelming her. Still, great that you found them. Another link below. “Wagakki” is Japanese for “traditional instruments” The “lute” thing is a Shamisen. The “harp” thing is a Koto. The “flute thing” is a shakuhachi. The band was founded by the singer, SUZUHANA Yuko. Yes, you’ve heard these instruments a million times, in movie soundtracks etc. Here is a video that really lets you see up close all the instruments and how they work together: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5idmLqcvNfHXX0.html It was originally written for a “Vocaloid” which is an electronic virtual singer-essentially an AI. In Japan (where else?) vocaloids have actually become pop stars.

That was a enjoyable reaction. There are four traditional instruments used, the flute (Shakuhachi), the three stringed Shamisen (banjo-like sound), the Koto (the 17 stringed vertical instrument) sort of like a harp on it's side, plucked with finger picks, and the Taiko drums (the very big drums).

When I look at Japanese bands, I sometimes feel that: "There may not be rock or metal music in Japan." That means that the image of rocks and metals considered by Europeans and Americans can be different from the image of rocks and metals considered in Japan. (Because I am Japanese, I may not understand the way of thinking of foreigners) In Japan, it is common to "enjoy your favorite sounds freely in your favorite style." Generally, the instruments used there are guitars and drums. But you have the freedom not to use the guitar or drums, and you have the freedom to use another instrument. Of course, there are no restrictions on costumes or performance ideas. (This means there is no self-control or interference like "rock needs to be played like ****") In such an environment, songs that combine POP / R & B / folk songs and classical music are often created. You may feel that the resulting music style is categorized as "rock" or "metal". I feel that many of the Japanese bands that are currently attracting attention have such an element. Wagakki Band is a band that strongly demonstrates such characteristics. by the way··· Currently, there are four Japanese bands that are attracting worldwide attention. Wagakki Band / BABYMETAL / Band-Maid and LOVEBITES. If LOVEBITES is not supported, please. LOVEBITES is a female heavy metal band, but there are many songs with good melody. (Example) Frozen Serenade / Edge of the World / Epilogue / Rising etc.) from Japan * Sentence using the translation app. Please laugh if it is a strange translation.
