Michelangelo's "La Pieta" is my favorite sculpture of all time. I decided to create a Mixed Media Painting inspired by this sculptural masterpiece, with the focus on Mary's sorrowful face.
In 1497, Michelangelo was commissioned by a French Cardinal (Jean de Bilheres Lagraulas) to create a sculpture for his future tomb in St Peter's Basilica.
"La Pieta" was sculpted from a single block of Carrara marble which Michelangelo claimed was the most perfect block of marble he had ever worked with.
Although I am not a religious person, (I'm not even Catholic) I find this beautiful work of art incredibly moving. This is why I decided to add it to a mixed media painting that I had already started.
I hope you enjoy this video!

I love that you painted this upside-down too, it just feels right :) (I don't know why, but...it does haha) The double-exposure effect is cool too--almost like there's another painting under the surface. I’ve watched all of the paintings that you have done(on KZfaq) and excuse I my dictating here. Anyway, I hope you’re doing well and post more. I really would like to see more of what you create, you seem like such an upbeat-person, and that you have a lot of new things that you could show fellow artist, like me, and I’d really appreciate that. I’ve always been told to never use oil paints over acrylic. Are you concerned about the oil paint releasing its bond with the acrylic substrate? I love your work!
@lydiabroderick867

Actually, it's perfectly safe to use oils on top of acrylic just not the other way around. As long as the acrylics are completely dry it's no issue to put oils on top.☺

I didn't go to school, but I grew up in a very artistic family and was always encouraged to be creative. I have been creating art since I was young, but I worked mainly with charcoal (portraits). I only dabbled with paint back then. I didn't start painting seriously until sometime after I turned 30. I'm 43 now. I know... Long response, but hard to pinpoint how long it's been.😬😊

I love your paintings, and I’ve watched many of your videos. I’ve been making art since I was two years old or less. But when painting I either do an oil painting or I do an acrylic painting. Usually oils. I know that gesso is an acrylic. But I’ve never tried painting oil over acrylic the way you do. When I told a couple of artist friends about your paintings, they both expressed concern that the oil would peel off at some point. Of course in this one it’s just a glaze. When I said what about gesso, that’s acrylic, they said thats specially formulated to be absorbent enough for the oil to stick to. What are your thoughts on this? Obviously you’re not worried about the oil peeling off. Have you had some of your paintings for years that you’ve done this technique with?
@lydiabroderick867
@lydiabroderick867 10 ай бұрын
Actually painting with oils over acrylics is a very common practice and oils adhere well to completely dried acrylics. Many artists use this technique especially for creating an underpainting or grisaille with acrylics and then completing the painting with oils. I appreciate the question because it was a question I had when I first saw the technique being used. Rest assured the oil paint does not peel off. I think the main rule is not to paint acrylic over oil. That would create some serious problems. 😊

@lydiabroderick867
@lydiabroderick867 Жыл бұрын
Hi Diane! Thank you! This one is for sale! I use oil glazes because they give me more work time. The colors are rich and easier to mix. It's my preference. The same effect can be achieved with acrylics. Blending with them is just more work.😊

Very beautiful, but the honeycomb effect was just too much for this specific portrait. The background was perfect without it. ( thats just my taste but I find this need to add in too much fluff just detracts from the actual painting, instead of enhancing it) You are clearly talented ! I see this technique taught at the Milan art institute and really think it has just been overused.
