Dr. Michele Hernández Bayliss is an amateur astronomer living in Vermont who has recently been getting into astrophotography. She has two unique home observatories and was kind enough to have me over for a tour of them. Other observatory tours in this series are available here: • Observatory Tours

In the past 18 months I've probably spent $15,000 on astrophotography related gear. That's an insane amount for me, I've never spent so much money on so much stuff so quickly. Dr. Bayliss probably did that in an afternoon as an afterthought.

I’ve been watching all of your observatory tour videos Nico, great work! I think I’m convinced that roll off roof (or something similar) is the best way to go. I want to have my own (or rather build my own) observatory under dark skies someday. Hopefully in the next ten years… I’m 20 right now. :) Lastly, one small request… In future videos can you please have a section discussing what made them choose the location? Having an idea of sqm/bortle scale, seeing conditions, transparency, etc. would be really helpful. And as always, thanks again for this awesome work, and clear skies!

Hello Nico, nice video. I have a question about the binocular eyepiece. What is it, who does sell it and how much did it cost ?
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos Ай бұрын
Denkmeier Binotron - Ed Ting here on youtube reviewed the system back in February. www.denkmeier.com/shop There are different options and add-ons, but you are looking at around $1500 with matched eyepieces.
@EvenTheDogAgrees
@EvenTheDogAgrees Ай бұрын
I don't understand the need for a bino viewer to compensate for deteriorating eyesight. I'm slightly nearsighted, enough to make the stars blurry with the naked eye, but I have absolutely no issues using regular eyepieces. You focus until it looks sharp, and you're done. It might look blurry for people with perfect eyesight, who"d have to fiddle with the focus knob until it's sharp for them, but those people would also have trouble with the bino viewer that's set for your diopter too. So what's the problem we're trying to solve here?
@user-nd3sj1rr4l
@user-nd3sj1rr4l Ай бұрын
Maybe it's the diopters in both eyes but I find that I can see a LOT better using both eyes than with one. I've used eyepieces for over 20 years and just a few months with the binoviewers - I also love that you can change the magnification by just pushing/pulling those levers so I can get 3 views in seconds instead of changing eyepieces. I'm just reporting on my "lived" experience that I can see objects in amazing detail using both eyes. It's been life changing. I don't work for the bino viewer company but I do love them!

I mean, the truth is it's the LABOR that is expensive - if you can build it yourself, you could save money. The actual materials were not that much but 3 guys working for 2-3 weeks was not cheap.

The observatory looks great but I don't get the point of building one when you are literally surrounded by a dense forest blocking your view all around except zenith.. maybe 50°+ or so?
@user-nd3sj1rr4l
@user-nd3sj1rr4l Ай бұрын
it might look that way but actually that is not true -in all directions but due south I can get down to 25-30. If I knew how to share, I'd show you my imported horizon but there is enough of a clearing that I get pretty clear views in all directions with a bit less due south (35 ish)
@MrGp3po
@MrGp3po Ай бұрын
Great location, especially for astrophotography. I routinely image from a narrow courtyard with only 60 degrees view from east to west and just barely a view of Polaris over the garage. The view to the south is over the neighbor's roof forty feet away and maybe down to 25 degrees. I get maybe four hours on each target as they move overhead and often hit three targets each night. The high angles are ideal since they mean I am only looking through 1/4 to 1/6th as much atmosphere as at the horizon. I would love to have grass and trees surrounding me that don't boil with the heat of the day. For the occasional special event, the portable rig comes out.

This ZWO hate by Ryan is getting a little tiresome. I appreciate that he has had issues but the ZWO system has enabled many people to get into the hobby at a reasonable price point. Nina is Windows only and would require a system change for us Mac users before even considering the cost of the Primaluce computers which are now being promoted as “the answer”. Some people drive a Porsche some a Ford, two ways to do a similar job, choice can very much depend on circumstances.
@user-nd3sj1rr4l
@user-nd3sj1rr4l Ай бұрын
I mean, in his defense, they do have pretty weak customer service plus I don't like how they lock you into ALL ZWO stuff. I used it for a year and liked it and as I mentioned, I love the ASI air but they could open up that platform so you could use the ASI air with other brands and all would be good. I just didn't like that you had to buy every single component from ZWO. But I agree with you that the ZWO is good bang for the buck at least until it malfunctions and then you are up the creek.
@poruatokin
@poruatokin Ай бұрын
Biggest issue I have withe the ASI Air is it is another case of Chinese thieves ripping off Open Source GLU software and making a profit from other people's hard work. Anyone using an ASI Air is basically handling stolen property..
@stolguy
@stolguy Ай бұрын
ZWO “locked-in”? You mean cameras? cuz my AsiAir plus works with my Ioptron GEM45 mount, Canon RA, iPad Pro , Skywatcher 120ED. WO Finder…so not EXACTLY locked out. Re service - had an issue with an EAF and they did replace it after video confirmation. And full disclosure a Zwo camera on the finder. It’s unlikely Ryan or any other tech support will ever come out and hang here for 4 nights, I think that’s breathing some rarified air for almost all of us. Anyway…it’s all working well. And when it doesn’t, I think there’s enough to buy another one.
