Glazing is layer transparent color over some section of underpainting. Born of the traditional technique of glazing with oils developed in Europe about 700 years ago, acrylic painters can also enjoy the luminous effects this technique creates.

The key is to know what colors to use, what to mix into the color to create transparency. I used to HATE glazing with acrylics because I worked with oil paints for 15 years and was used to their slow-drying, easy leveling properties. Now that I know to use a glazing medium I can create a similar effect with acrylics with the added benefit that I can layer quickly without waiting days or weeks for the layer underneath to dry as is often necessary with oil glazing.

Love your explanation in this video. Exactly what I needed. When first using the glazing liquid with some color I noticed those original streaks when applying and I felt so frustrated because I didn't want a streaky look at all. I noticed later that it seemed to "level out" as you mentioned, which was such a relief. Now I know it wasn't a fluke. I'm going to do a test side by side of gloss medium and glazing medium to see the different results. Thank you!

It’s great that you found a way, Julie that you’re happy with! I do mention in my other video that it’s best not to Go over 30% of water to paint ratio. You might be able to get away with a little bit more water but you might not get that molecular bonding you need to bond each successive layer permanently. over time you might find things flaking off. I did have a student in North Carolina told me that no one had ever told her this and many years later a bunch of her layers were falling off because she had used too much water. So I’m not telling you what to do I’m just giving you information. I think it’s great that you have found your own way. You make your own rules it’s your painting! I’m just trying to give technical information that I found helpful.

@@MicheleTheberge Thank you for this video. Very informative. I want to start painting and am thinking acrylics are the best way to go, to start with anyway. Since going to the Abstract Expressionism exhibition at the Royal Academy in London a few years ago I have become absorbed by Mark Rothko's work and want to try putting down colour in the way that he did. I know he didn't allow people to watch him paint but understand that he painted in layers, diluting/thinning paint to get the translucence, and have been wondering how to go about this, though believe he mostly painted in oil. I think this glazing medium combined with decent quality acrylic paint looks like a good way to get started. There seem to be so many different types of medium which I find confusing, gloss, matt, pouring, airbrush etc.. I assumed glazing was for putting over the top of a painting to give it a shiny finish, as you would ceramics. Now I know better, thank you.

Can you glaze in the very dark pigment and still achieve transparency? I loved this very dark blue but didn't like the lighter color when the glaze was added. I know this is a very old video but I discovered you recently and am happy to see that you are still posting new content for us to see. I value your expertise and experience.
@MicheleTheberge
@MicheleTheberge Жыл бұрын
Yes you can! Tara, what happens when you add the medium in is that the acrylic polymer refracts light differently than water. When the acrylic glazing medium dries it will go clear. So it makes it appear like your dark blue is lighter but once it dries it will become clear. You may want to look into my Craftsy course where I walk you through how to make a glazing chart and experiment with glazing and understanding the shifts from wet to dry. tinyurl.com/michelecraftsy

Hi there! Thanks for following on instagram. Loved seeing your bird friend! Different brands vary in their quality and I'm not sure which brands are readily available in New Zealand but there are several good companies like Lascaux, Golden, Winsor & Newton and acrylic that make excellent mediums that should stand the test of time just as well as acrylic paints do when used properly.

Why are you saying “gloss medium”? Medium comes in different sheens. Do you mean matte medium is okay? I personally don’t want to glaze with something that changes the sheen of the paint underneath. Is glazing medium glossy?
@MicheleTheberge
@MicheleTheberge Жыл бұрын
Matte medium is gloss medium that has aggregates added to cut out the reflectivity. This makes it slightly cloudy when dry which is going to change the luminosity of your glaze. You can always put a matte varnish over top. You have some great questions and it will take some trial and error and experimentation to get exactly what you want. Yes, glazing medium has a gloss finish for the reasons I stated above. Happy painting!

Also are you aware of a product that is clear light yellow that can be used to create an acrylic transparent look. I think it is also an extender. I can't find the video that I saw it in but I'm planning a painting that I want to use this product and technique. Just grasping at straws. Thank you.
@MicheleTheberge
@MicheleTheberge Жыл бұрын
Oh dear, Tara, I don't know what that product might be. Were you able to find it? If you want a light yellow, you could also use a transparent yellow mixed in with an acrylic gloss or gel medium, depending on the thickness of the extender you would like. In general, I would say if an acrylic product is yellow as it comes out, it could further yellow over time. Which is something most artists want to avoid. You can control that by adding the yellow into your medium rather than buying a product that is already yellow. Does that make sense? If you were to make your own, I would recommend a color like transparent yellow, Azo, Indian, yellow, or transparent yellow oxide to get that nice kind of very subtle, very transparent golden tint.

Dear Joanna, you can add glaze to your paint as you paint a sky for instance or bushes and you may use plain glaze (watered down) when painting is complete (let dry first 2-3 days). I don't know why Michelle isn't responding to these questions but she loves the compliments and responds to those. Maybe answers follow I'm reading below. Hope this helps I'm 70 and I love to paint. Think of glazing as building up delicate layers of colour to create the effect you desire. You can paint a picture either Directly - applying the colour values, from light to dark, as you see them in relatively thick layers like the Impressionist painters did like Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Starry Night. This is Alla Prima technique, or you can build up those colour values in multiple thin layers, step by step like a house. This is Indirect painting, and was the process described You first paint the foundation which is the Underpainting that contains all the colour values from dark to light in your picture in a single cool or warm colour according to your subject. You then add the various colours in thin layers of paint mixed with glazing medium, following the values established in the Underpainting. By using thin layers you can control your colour values minutely, and can exploit the effect of light on those layers. The finished painting can have more depth and subtle interest because of those layers. It is the classical technique. You can do either depending on whether you want a impressionistic or a representational rendering of your subject.

@Michelle-dn6lm
@Michelle-dn6lm 4 жыл бұрын
Chris W if your planning on adding color on top of the black and white, it might alter the tones of your paint (make them more cool than they would be naturally). With brown there is a natural earth tone that usually isn’t too cool or warm to alter the tone of the colors in the over painting. With that being said, there are no set rules for painting so you should experiment with whatever colors you wish😊

I think a matte product would work best for layering pencils. You need a little bit of tooth to grab the pigment and wax in the pencils. Try some samples because the matte medium will have slightly cloudy effect and dull the colors a little bit, but since you are layering color on top it may not be a problem for the effect you are after.

I wonder if there’s a ratio limit. I’ve heard with oil painting You’re only supposed to add so much medium but perhaps it’s way different with acrylics. I know acrylic paint is plastic like and some artists say you shouldn’t add any water to your painting because it dilutes the stickiness of the paint but I wonder if it doesn’t matter at all with adding medium because it has some of those binding qualities in it.
@MicheleTheberge
@MicheleTheberge 4 жыл бұрын
Mediocre Shakespeare Yes, you are grasping the concept entirely. I have talked about the molecular structure of acrylics and how it dries in more in depth in other videos. I’m sorry I can’t refer you to which one because I don’t remember. But basically it has to do with the molecular structure of the acrylic a binder. Acrylic mediums are composed mostly, and in some cases entirely of binder. So you are not compromising the paint film by adding acrylic medium. You can add as much as you like. And you might want to check out my video “worst mistake acrylic painters” make. I do talk about about these concepts there, especially to issue with underbinding the paint film.

But, I think the special ingredient is the love I have for my fellow artists. That’s what drives me to make these videos. 🙏🌿💚

Hi Paul! Have you watched my entire playlist on glazing? I talk about this historical application of glazing and it’s contemporary application. Let me know if that helps. kzfaq.info/sun/PLFNvPfOa2yC5haysmUeWTF4l-mIqGlh6c

Thank you for asking! Since I don’t regularly paint flowers I would suggest you finding another KZfaq teacher for this. ♥️🙏🌿🦋There are so many wonderful people here.
