it was getting really bad when I was there in 2021. I have memories of TRASH, piles and piles of it, tents, needles, just all kinds of trash ALL over the bike trails and tents in every corner of the city. And that used to be such a cool thing about Portland, having these awesome bike trails throughout the city. we can never take safety and cleanliness for granted ever again. it is truly sad what has happened to so many great cities in the US. we can't just sit here and pretend to not understand the REASONS it happened.

The issue is if an arrest is actually made, judges throw out every case that comes their way. The person just goes back out on the street sane day. Police stop bothering after a point when they know the politicians and judges dont care - they arent looking to risk their safety when the whole local system is saying "this is fine".

Fortunately I live in a small town and my side of town is very safe. I leave my truck open all the time and have left stuff in there on accident. I caught someone looking in my truck once. He is no longer alive to look in peoples vehicles anymore.
