Just like my state’s song. And it’s exactly like this, Maryland, My Maryland. But Michigan’s song. However sounds better. The lyrics seem more meaningful and loyal to the USA. While my state song has a lot to do with the Confederacy and there were points and time that we tried to change the song or at least add another state song. I would say they should be another one as there are some states that have more than one state song. The state song has no meaning anymore as more people fought for the Union and more of the states being like Northerners. So really wouldn’t be relevant having that to be our state song, ESPECIALLY today. The MD today is very progressive and has more culture like all of these Northern states.

This is NOT Michigan's official song. The OFFICIAL state song is called "My Michigan" which was written in the mid-20th century -- this is an earlier song called "Michigan, My Michigan," which was written in 1865; then revised twice. The latest version, which is the one taught in schools, uses a completely different tune that was written in 1908. "My Michigan" is famous for being adopted as "an official song of the State of Michigan," after which the members of the Michigan Legislature gathered on the steps of the Capitol Building to sing it -- and it has never been sung in public since, because the men who wrote it would not give or sell their copyright to the State of Michigan. They were apparently hoping to make a tidy pile of money by getting royalities for every time it was played at a state function; with the result it has NEVER been played at any public or private functions at all. The Bentley HIstorical Library at the University of MIchigan is one of the few places that actually has a copy of the music to "My Michigan," presumably because the University of Michigan is an official depository for all State of Michigan documents.
@rkstudios4506 жыл бұрын
So?
@michealtmcloughlin75996 жыл бұрын
So ... you've stated it is Michigan's official song when it isn't. That fact is wrong so I write to correct it, and to tell an amusing story. Another song is Michigan's **official** state song - - but nobody ever sings it because they'd have to pay a royalty if they did, because it's still protected by copyright. Conversely, all three versions of the song you have uploaded are in the public domain; including Miessner's 1902 melody, which entered the public domain in 1958 (nine years before the death of its composer in 1967). Quick backstory: The authors of "My Michigan" (not to be confused with "Michigan, My Michigan") were politically well-connected. They used their connexions to get "My Michigan" named "an official song of the State of Michigan." But then they refused to sell or give their copyright to the state, apparently thinking they could make a lot of money by their song being played at every state function, in schools, etc. And for that reason, their song has never been sung at *any* state functions, in schools, etc., because nobody wants to pay a royalty to use it. Consequently, most people don't even know that Michigan does have an official state song, because nobody ever sings it. (Talk about classic!) The Bentley Library at the University of Michigan is one of the few places where you can find a copy of it. The state song that people DO get taught in schools is the third version of the UNofficial "Michigan, My Michigan" -- from 1902 (my fingers misspoke 1908 above), with words by Douglas Malloch of Muskegon. Malloch's lyrics have the same rhythm and meter as the original 1862 lyrics by Winifred Brent Lyster, and the second version written by James W. Long in 1886. But the current version of the song uses a new tune that was written by W. Otto Miessner of Detroit. You can hear the current melody of "Michigan, My Michigan" right here on KZfaq at: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9lmf7ForLbJgIU.html

I apologize for my flippant remark. Hope you enjoyed it in spite of the inaccuracy.

Here's a link to my recording of the 1902 Malloch-Meissner version of Michigan, My Michigan. Yes. Different lyrics and a completely different melody. My research revealed it was/has never "officially" adopted by the legislature. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7SBmq-hxM-pY2g.html

It gave me pause, when I looked at when this was posted. At a time when I felt furthest away from the land of my birth, after they helped elect those most Un-American.

Yo, I'm from Michigan, and this just sounds like Christmas tree, o christmas tree. We need a new state song, this one's not great tbh.

Yep. Oh Tannenbaum. It is not however, the official state song, "My Michigan" is and was named as such in 1937. The former is referred to as the state anthem. Thanks for watching.

@@rkstudios450 Thanks! I looked for "my michigan" and assumed it was the same song.

Welp. Came here after The-podcast-i-shale-not-name-here and I am sad to hear it's just a Christmas tree rip off.

Then again, Hundreds, thousands of 50's Rock and Roll hits were based on three chords. Thanks for watching.
