Fayette Historic State Park offers a walk back through history to the iron-smelting town of Fayette. Tucked away in one of the southern fingers of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it's a bit of a drive to get there but worth the effort. There is a small state park campground near the historic village, so consider staying a few days so you have plenty of time to wander and enjoy the historic buildings and displays. There also is a harbor where you can "camp" in your boat!

What an interesting place, my family were iron workers in Wales, UK and I believe some travelled across The Pond to work in the US and use their experience. So this is fascinating to see where they may well have worked (haven't traced them enough yet to know where they went) Thanks for sharing!

It is really neat to take a step back in time and imagine what life was like at Fayette when it was a bustling community. It would be interesting to find out more about where your family landed. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I am going to look into it further, I have a cousin in Canada who is part of the line that came across so I am sure she has the details. Over here in the UK we do take all our history for granted sometimes, because it's so old, but I do love more modern history and how towns came about and developed for you guys. It's all fascinating! I will keep you informed of what I find out.

Wow - Thanks for filming this! Its been nearly 20 years since we've visited this marvelous place. The signage on the furnace when we visited in 2004 was quite true: You COULD still smell remnants of the pig iron :)

I love spending time there. I usually enjoy the "campgroundy" environs of Indian Lake State Park and then drive to the area. Really enjoy your videos and keep up the fun and informative work! :)

That's a bonus! We arranged for a ride on a sled while visiting Tahquamenon Falls State Park one year with a group and it was a ton of fun.

Just visited this past weekend. I've thing that srood out skinny the shore was the slag bits, including what looks like obsidian, but as this place is not volcanic implies it must be leftovers from the smelting.

It's a great spot, isn't it? Leftovers from the smelting is what makes the most sense. Thanks for letting us know about your trip and what you found!

I believe the choices may be limited, but the Michigan DNR says some of the sites at the campground can take up a 50-foot rig. I would be sure to carefully check the campsite spots if you're looking to book online or call and talk to a ranger to be sure you end up in a large enough site. -Ari

Glamping is all the rage now though, so state parks are having to adapt. It's crazy how big and how much power the new rigs are drawing. Thanks for watching! -Ari
