Love the steam tractors. That is so cool to see them working, loaded. I love all the old iron shows, where the engines are running - but hearing them PULL A LOAD is really something awesome!

We knew a guy down in Waretown, NJ with one of these steam tractors. The thing could pull out any stump. He used to make shingles the same way with his tractor. He put a train whistle on it and rode it around town tooting the whistle. What a thrill that was for me way back then.

I used to see (1950s or so) signs along rural highways in Michigan that said "Vehicles With Lugs Prohibited". I expect that this was what they were talking about. They would probably do a lot of damage to the asphalt on a hot summer day.

Saw a few of these abandoned behind barns, or setting in small town parks after skidding logs until they were replaced by modern technology. As a farm kid in the Midwest, these things fascinated me. NM was pretty far behind. During small town parades across NM of today, the oldest tractors are post war 1948-1950's models. The farms are along the river valleys, most were comparatively small, historically family owned. They were still being worked by draft animals and manual labor, until relatively recent years :>)

Wow! Nice to see those engines earn their keep as they were designed to- pulling a six-bottom plow like it was nothing. With the steam tech that's been developed since 1950, you'd get twice the horsepower and half the smoke out of the same engine. Even burning coal, a steam engine can be made to run cleaner than a pre-emissions diesel..

There is a gas and steam show like this in Clarksville, MI on Aug. 24, 25, 26th every year. It's right by my house. I hear the old steam powered sawmill going on late at night for the final show of the evening.

Great. Tradition in the UK is for an engine at each end and the plough towed between them. In the middle of the field it is uncannily quiet!!

Most of the time it is to switch direction. Many implements need to run only in one direction to function properly (saws, corn shellers, corn grinders, water pumps with vanes). Pumpjacks normally do not matter what direction they run. A twist in the belt also helps to keep it on the pulleys when it is windy (sometimes a double twist is used).

Engines on steam traction engines run about 250 RPM. Sawmill blades run at 450 to 500, some sawmill blades are hammered to run at higher RPMs.

crowned pulleys keep a flat belt tracking. Before V-belts were invented, machinery was usually powered through flat canvas belts running on crowned pulleys.

I think that if I had an engine like that which I was using for any actual work, I'd replace that front chain steer axle with large truck steer axle.. It would be more precise at least and wouldn't wobble about like these do.

The pulley has a crown in it. If the belt runs to one side, the crown in the wheels will stretch the belt making it move in the opposite direction.

In old Germany was it use to operate with a tow system for plugging. This here seem much more progressive for that time. I remember my grandfather says they had around 245 hp.
