----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carl Sagan believed humanity needed to become a multi-planet species as an insurance policy against the next huge catastrophe on Earth. Now, Elon Musk is working to see that mission through, starting with a colony of a million humans on Mars. Where will our species go next?
Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku looks decades into the future and makes three bold predictions about human space travel, the potential of 'brain net', and our coming victory over cancer.
"[I]n the future, the word 'tumor' will disappear from the English language," says Kaku. "We will have years of warning that there is a colony of cancer cells growing in our body. And our descendants will wonder: How could we fear cancer so much?"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MICHIO KAKU:
Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, and is one of the most widely recognized scientists in the world today. He has written 4 New York Times Best Sellers, is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and has hosted numerous science specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery/Science Channel. His radio show broadcasts to 100 radio stations every week. Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study as well as New York University (NYU).

TRANSCRIPT:
MICHIO KAKU: We are entering what I call the next golden era of space exploration. We have not just new energy and new financing and money coming from Silicon Valley, we also have a new vision emerging. For Elon Musk of SpaceX it's to create a multi-planet species. However, for Jeff Bezos of Amazon, he wants to make Earth into a park so that all the heavy industries, all the pollution, goes into outer space. And Jeff Bezos wants to set an Amazon-type delivery system connecting the earth to the moon. And so he wants to lift all the heavy industries off the planet Earth to make Earth a paradise and to put all the heavy industries in outer space.
Now, I once talked to Carl Sagan and he said that because the earth is in the middle of a shooting gallery of asteroids and comets and meteors, it's inevitable that we will be hit with a planet buster. Something like what hit the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago, we need an insurance policy. Now, he was clear to say that we're not talking about moving the population of the earth into outer space-that costs too much money. And we have problems of our own on the earth like global warming. We have to deal with those problems on the earth not flee to outer space. But as an insurance policy, we have to make sure that humans become a two-planet species. These are the words of Carl Sagan.
And now, of course, Elon Musk has revived this vision by talking about a multi-planet species. He wants to put up to a million colonists on the planet Mars, sent to Mars by his rockets financed by a combination of public and private funding, including fusion rockets, ramjet fusion rockets, including anti-matter rockets. Some of these rockets, of course, their technologies won't be available till the next 100 years. However, the laws of physics make it possible to send postage-stamp-size chips to the nearby stars. So think of a chip, perhaps this big, on a parachute and have thousands of them sent into outer space energized by perhaps 800 megawatts of laser power. By shooting this gigantic bank of laser energy into outer space, by energizing all these mini-parachutes you could then begin to accelerate them to about 20% the speed of light. This is with doable technology today. It's just a question of engineering. It's a question of political will and economics but there's no physics, there's no law of physics preventing you from shooting these chips to 20% the speed of light. That means Proxima Centauri, part of the Alpha Centauri triple star system, could be within the range of such a device. Now think about that. That means that within 20 years, after 20 years of launch, we might be able to have the first starship go to a nearby planet. And it turns out that Proxima Centauri B is an Earth-like planet that circles around the closest star to the planet Earth-what a coincidence. So it means that we've already staked out our first destination for visitation by an interstellar starship. And that...

We shouldn't be afraid of robots but human nature. What's going to happen to earth? When the narcissist and megalomaniacs in charge have a plan b. When the main thing stopping them from launching nukes at each other is mutually assured destruction. What do you think they will do? When they know there family and themselves can escape and humanity wont go extinct. They can just live on Mars. Then come back to earth in 100 years or so. I'll give you a hint they do not give a crap about us. Just what they can get from us.

It may be experimental tech that already exists today. Brain mapping, leading to predicting actions. The next step is mimicking what the thoughts are. In your subconscious, you know the sound of her voice because the brain records it. Some drugs allow you to bring down that wall and profoundly experience some things in the subconscious, but that is just an off subject easter egg.

Such a sad comment. I feel sorry for that. There is nothing more important in the world than our mother's voice. Hope somehow your brain picks it up and bring it back to you. It is there. He didn't give you any solution. Its like a wish list to Santa Clause, you can make one yourself it won't change anything. As far cancer goes, veganism is shown to greatly reduce mortality. Does someone study how and why? Nope, the ones that do it have no funding from big corporations that don't look at the subject. It was shown that some sorts of mushrooms help greatly and there were experimental cases where some cancers on the latest stages were fully healed with expensive mushrooms cocktails. Did they try to investigate how to breed those mushrooms in larger quantities and make procedure cheaper and widely available? Nope, but they study mushrooms for their properties to make chemo therapy a tiny bit better and a lot pricier. Nano bots aren't magic. Want to make injection? Syringe. Want to cut it off? Scalpel. Without understanding of how to revert the process that kickstarted cancer cells to become more active all of this is useless. Even if cancer is removed it doesn't mean that cancer cells won't appear somewhere else at some point in time. Chemeo therapy just kills everything including normal cells but it also not a 100% guarantee. Declaimer, we're all gonna die in WW3 anyway. If putin and his people will go insane over loss in Ukraine its all over, we'll be reduced to steampunk (well the ones that survive atleast).

Dr. Kaku, way back in the ‘70s, there was a sci-fi mini series on TV in which the characters evolved from a human form into globes of energy that could accomplish anything with brain power. External limbs were no longer required to function. I’ve long since forgotten the name of the series but have always wondered if that was where mankind was eventually headed. Do you think we’ll evolve into “energy spheres” with no need for a physical self? By the way, it’s a real treat for me to be able to talk to you. Please continue to do interesting and informative videos.

If exams - all testing - used only essay questions, then the only possibility of cheating, copying another essay, could easily be discovered. The essay is the best and only way to show whether you understand the subject at hand. It’s also the best and only way to show what you don’t yet understand. This is so important because you need to know what you don’t know in order to rectify that situation.

@MaxedOut4RealExactly! - Its sadly typical for our western world, that we are glad, when someone spins out those technical fantasies - and says not a single word to all those questions that normally should jump into everyones eyes: Whats with overpopulation, - whats with poverty, desease, hunger and starvation in all those gigantic regions of the 3d world, whats with continuing warfare, - whats with continuing decline of democracy and growth of stupid nationalism and totalitaristic autocracies and national isolation, - whats with the progressing desintegration of environmental and ecological structures everywhere and questions of energy supply, - whats with capitalistic plundering of basical ressources and social decline, etc., etc. .... - I think, this guy waits for some scientists to build a somewhat almighty A.I. the "ultimate technological singularity", which spits out all solutions for the world wide structural problems.... - but what, when this artifical super-intelligence comes to the conclusion, that because it is the "new supreme species" on earth, doesn't want to work as a "digital slave" of mankind and the world will be better without those mad-gone primates, who permanently act contra-productive in relation to the interests of a healthy natural system and decides to erase the era of human presence from earth? - Just take a look on human history: - Its a simple fact, that it is characteristic for humans, to turn every ingenious idea soon into something bad, because once such an idea is appearing, it soon will be overlapsed by what may be the "dark sides of human drives": personal interests, greed, envy, egomany, paranoia,...all that bad elements of humans mind, that are generally described by - for example - the biblical "death sins"... . - There are countless examples in history for that: Soon after man made the first spears and bow and arrow, he found out, that he could not only use them for hunting, but also to kill other humans, he didn't like! -'The discovery of metal soon lead to the construction of better weapons and arms to kill, - the same with gunpowder ( lomg before europeans had the idea to use it as a weapon, the chinese had it, but used it only for fireworks!), not long after the discover of radioactivity the first a-bomb was been built, the dscovery of money was originally meant as a more practical way to exchange products, but soon the first human came to the idea to use it to make profite and plunder out his human mates. - Automobiles, aeroplanes, submarines, chemicals, gas, satellites, every form of science - even economy and psychology .... whatever you want, it was soon used to gain power above others, destroy life, to satisfy any kind of dark needs, to kill others.... So it is in fact very naive and stupid, to point out imaginatios of what "glorious progress" technology may bring in the future, when you don' t waste a look on the overwhealming problems reality shows - and the dark side of humans intentions. This man here looks on everything only from one - the "pink" - side of life - he looks at a hypothetical future of world, as he WISHES it to be, not as it - objectivly seen - will use to be - and thats the principally, enormous fault he makes! ...the hard to understand thing is, that he is a scientist .... he REALLY should know it better..... Technologies doesn't have the solutions for our problems here on earth - they are complete useless, if mankind formerly and/ or parallel doesn't develop another general state of mind, thats more "constructive" and "collective" ( ... in a empathetic, not "communist" meaning!) less egomanic and missguiding and far less "destructive"!

That's how it always starts though. New technology is expensive and usually very specialized so the only people to afford it are the wealthy or military. Wartime brought in a lot of modern technology like rockets, commercial flights, drones, computers, etc. Even outside of war new tech is always seen as a rich man's status symbol, like the automobile or cellphones. Now even homeless people have them. New technology might only come about to benefit the rich and powerful but eventually as it becomes cheaper to produce and it's usage expands beyond it's initial conception us peasants will get it eventually.

Much of what he says could become true if western science and civilization predominate. Unfortunately, there are many among the political and academic elite in the west who believe Christianity and capitalism are the underlying causes for racism and genocide. Like here in Canada, because of historic wrongs committed against indigenous peoples, universities are ditching the scientific method in favor of native spirituality. This may serve to absolve guilty consciences in the short run, but it will make it increasingly difficult to achieve technological progress in the future.

We can just send robots to build and maintain structures there for the meantime until we are sure that it's finally safe for human beings to live there long-term. When personal computers first came out, only the wealthy could afford to buy one. Same goes for thousands of other 'advances' -- like glasses, or air-conditioning, or cars, and on and on. Over time -- usually decades -- these advances become more and more accessible to all classes. And it has nothing to do with economic or political systems, it's just the way the world works.

Give a 10 homeless men $100,000 each, and within 3-4 years, all but 2 of them will be back on the streets. In most cases, poverty is a lifestyle, a sum of personal choices especially in the developed world. It's hard to get rich, but it's easy to get out of poverty if you're willing to make the right steps. However on a global scale, give the residence of China and India, the same amount of resources per person North American's use, there wouldn't be enough resources inside the earth's ground to make that happen, let alone the people in Africa. Humanity will always be in this equilibrium balance between rich and poor, hunger and excessive consumption. Unless the whole world population drops back a couple billion, it'll be impossible for everyone to live comfortably. There is only that much land.

Did you not pay attention? The absolute as well as the average wealth of humans has skyrocketed each time in history because of each scientific revolution, and you want to stop this one because of suffering? Where do you think the material wealth will come from to free the sick, starving, and homeless? Do you honestly think every generation before yours has just been irredeemably evil, choosing to put unnecessary suffering on billions, but yours can just choose to ignore reality and end that? Do you seriously want to help the sick, starving, and homeless by NOT developing new biomedical, agricultural, and construction technologies? What a short-sighted excuse for a human being.
