MICHIO KAKU:
Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, and is one of the most widely recognized scientists in the world today. He has written 4 New York Times Best Sellers, is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and has hosted numerous science specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery/Science Channel. His radio show broadcasts to 100 radio stations every week. Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study as well as New York University (NYU).

Question: Is it possible for antimatter to form complex structures such as molecules or even entire life forms? (Submitted by Ron Or-El)
Michio Kaku: Ron, you ask a very interesting question. In fact, and I was in high school, I used to play with antimatter. It turns out that sodium 22 naturally emits positrons or anti-electrons. I put the antimatter inside a cloud chamber, put it into a 600 gas magnetic field and clearly, the positrons were bending in the wrong direction in a magnetic field, meaning that positive electrons were being created in my cloud chamber. Later, I built an atom smasher in hopes of getting a beam of antimatter. So antimatter has the opposite charge of ordinary matter. The antimatter that I photographed in high school had a positive charge. Electrons usually have a negative charge. So anti-electrons can circulate around anti-protons. And we did this at Cern, outside Geneva Switzerland, and also at Ferma Lab outside Chicago. In fact, if you read the novel, Angels and Demons, which was made into a movie starring Tom Hanks, the whole novel was based upon building an antimatter bomb that might be able to destroy the Vatican.
So if I had antimatter and, according to the novel, if I touch it with ordinary matter I would have complete annihilation, meaning that the efficiency of the bomb would be about 100 times greater than the efficiency of a hydrogen bomb. A hydrogen bomb is only about one percent efficient; antimatter bomb would be 100% efficient. So anti-people are also possible. Anti-planets, anti-galaxies are also possible. But the danger is that if the two touch each other. And they will annihilate into a burst of energy.
However, we've looked for antimatter in the universe. And we've looked everywhere for antimatter, and we see very little antimatter in the galaxy. There is a fountain of antimatter coming out from the center of the Milky Way galaxy. In the direction of the constellation Sagittarius; however, it's very small. And it leaves the mystery, why are we made out of matter and not antimatter? Why don't we meet anti-people out there? That's a big cosmological question. The Leading Theory Is, at the Beginning of the Universe, at the Big Bang, there were almost equal amounts of matter and antimatter. The two annihilated in the instant of the Big Bang and we are the leftovers. So everything you see around us today we believe is a leftover from the titanic annihilation of matter and antimatter at the beginning of the universe itself.

...this may seem like an odd question, but when is it normal for a public school curriculum to reach antimatter, if public schools do teach this? I think it would be very interesting... right now my class isn't even going into organic evolution, which is a bit disappointing..

I am just a truck driver but I did stay in an Averitt Express truck last night. Create anti plutonium, bring it close enough for to normal plutonium for their emitted electrons to hit each other. The total conversion of these particles would create a vast amount of energy and leave no residual radioactive residue.

Perhaps, but we don't actually know if the chemistry of anti-matter is identical to normal matter. We may never know.

nakata023 The chemistry would need to be the same in order to form stars, planets and life as we know it. I hope actually that the chemistry is different. As someone interested in chemistry I would like to see completely different molecular bonds than those of normal matter.

Not possible because our universe has a allot of matter. As soon as it touches with any matter then it transforms into instant 100% energy boom. Physics doesn't say it's impossible but truly how possible is it that anti matter survived from the big bang enough to make a habitable solar system with life dodging any normal matter. Not to mention anti matter has electrons and neutrons in the middle with protons where electrons should be. Meaning their physics would be a lot different and they would have different elements than us Or at least that's what I think.

Max erns Actually, anti-atoms haven *positrons* instead of electrons (the same type of particle as electrons, just opposite charge) and *anti-protons* instead of protons (the same type of particle as protons, just opposite charge).

Is the radiation (energy) from gamma decay the same as the quarks released in the atom smashing experiments at CERN?If so,do these quarks of energy have a polarity?If yes ,wouldn't you rather just attract the positive/negative particle from gamma decay to make antimatter much more cheaper?uranium238 is petty prolific if not cheaper than smashing atoms.

Knee dragon, I can appreciate your speculation. I too have contemplated a more productive and/or conventional use. I then found a documentary surrounding the studies of scientists who have been working on such a use. What you ask? Space exploration, deep space as a matter of fact. My colliding the positrons with the electrons gamma rays are produced which will slowly propel a ship at an exponential rate until it reaches light speed. From here we would theoretically be able to reach the outer reaches of the galaxy instantaneously. The only barrier, however, is the storage of positrons and being able to trigger the "annihilation" at the desired time. I sure hope that they can find a way to make this work because it would be an amazing discovery indeed.

The question itself is somewhat flawed. Because you asked why aren't we made of anti-matter instead of matter, well that's just because of perception of matter. In a different reality, we could consider matter to be anti-matter, and anti-matter to be matter.

It depends on the number of particles annihilating. An electron and a positron have a mass of 9.11*10^-31 kg each, giving a total mass of 1.82*10^-30 kg. If one electron annihilated with one positron, the amount of energy released is given by ΔE = Δm *c^2. So the energy released from one annihilation is 1.82*10^-30*(3*10^8)^2 = 1.64*10^-13J. To put this into context, the average human BMR is around 100 W (joules per second). To power a human, you would need 6*10^14 annihilations per second.

Amazing he is doing all those experiments when he was in high school. However, the collision between matter and antimatter is not 100%, only around 50% as it produces particles depending on the setup.

Interesting concept. Dark matter is mass we cannot see but still causes gravity, there is a hypothetical thesis about negative matter, which it has the opposite effect it which it repels mass. It feels like every time physics starts answering a question another question is discovered. Fascinating.

According to one idea I read about, anti-matter might have anti-gravitational properties when interacting with ordinary matter (but behave like matter when interacting with itself), therefore explaining why there is little anti-matter in this observable universe. This anti-gravitational property might also explain what Dark Matter and Dark Energy really are: byproducts of this repulsive curvature. Now we just need a visible lump of anti-matter and see how it interacts...

@bloodyclaws my thoughts exactly, the most hands on experiment we got in high school was lighting a splint, putting it in a jar and watching it suffocate when it gets no oxygen? LOL! no wonder most people have no interest in science at a young age.. need more Michio Kaku's to be teaching these kids! I found experiments to be so neat, but most of the time we were memorizing the periodic table of elements or listening to lectures about the most boring parts of science!

@deyomash It's been a while since I've read up on this, but I think the theory is that the universe started with *almost* equal matter and antimatter, (10 billion to 10 billion and 1 ratio IIRC). Now that most of it has annihilated each other, the ratio between matter and antimatter is much more significant. Of course, we're still trying to figure out why there was that slight difference in matter and antimatter in the first place.

No, because when anti matter and matter come in contact with each other they annihalate (the process by which all of their mass is converted to energy). So any anti matter which could be contained in a person would be annihalated almost instantaneously by the normal matter which makes up the person.

Timmeh Groeneveld: and that "the big bang"was just the implosion of only the galaxy we are in. Since the mass of the center hole became too heavy for it's energy to sustain it's space in time.

As someone considering reading to become a chemist, I would love to somehow get some anti-atoms and try to form some molecules to see if the chemistry of anti-matter is identical to normal matter. It's probably impossible though as it would be far too dangerous to handle.

TheZooropaBaby Only one problem; Antimatter isn't the EXACT opposite of normal matter. There is a slight difference in the proton-configuration, which might have an impact on the chemical properties of anti-matter.

i am no expert in physics but my simple understanding from this video suggests that if there was equal amount of anti matter in space..would'nt it collide with matter and eventually nothing will be left..

Wow, indeed an interesting question! And is seems dark matter interacts with matter only through gravity, so, maybe, the dark matter holding some galaxies could be mostly "Anti-Dark Matter"? It could be ok to have matter and anti-dark matter together without causing an explosion. As we can't differentiate anti-dark matter from dark matter, This could be the possible explanation for the asymmetry. The anti matter just got to another vibration in the string theory.

@MsSkateboardP Yes, the energy from a matter-antimatter annihilation comes from their rest energies, which means the total energy will be proportional to their total mass.

How would you be able to tell if something was composed of antimatter/matter or not from a distance? Does it behave with light differently in some way? Can they see if a star is composed of mostly Hydrogen or Anti-Hydrogen just by electromagnetic fields?

Electrons having negative charge, just as many things in physics, is by convention. You could say electrons have positive charge (equivalent to saying it's antimatter) but you'd have to flip a lot of different, related attributes' signs too.

How would a tightly sealed container prevent antimatter from touching matter if the container is made out of matter? If the container is made out of antimatter, how do we prevent matter from touching it? We can't control the motion of atoms well enough to prevent them from colliding with other atoms.

what i think is that antimatter lies on the other side of the space and time fabric, according to the big bang theory there was no space and time in the very early universe(before planks time which is 10*-41 sec).now space and time might be like a mattress which if u put wight on it bends that is how gravity wells are formed by planet, stars galaxies etc. some how antimatter and matter cant pass through the spacetime fabric everywhere but only in the black holes. so blackholes are nothing but a hole through the spacetime fabric through which matter amd antimatter combines and produce a lot of energy that we observe. that is where everything end ,all the matter, light photons even time. moreover the gravity wells formed by matter might simply be the atraction between the same amount of matter and antimatter on each side of the 'mattress'.

he's just like me... all his best scientific ideas originally come from trying to weaponize simple ideas as a kid. he wanted to make an antimatter beam. as a kid i heard that charged coils and gasses can accelerate light via electromagnetic fields (over simplified but get off me) so i wanted to make a lazer death ray... my dad later laughed at me and burst my bubble and told me i just made very basic MRI

I thought the most commonly accepted theory regarding apparent scarcity of antimatter was that large amounts of both antimatter and matter were present after the 'big bang', and the majority mutually annihilated, with a very small amount of matter 'winning out'.

right but as the second part of my question/statement said, I am thinking that if there are antiparticles then they will have opposite properties. Specifically, a repulsion due to gravity (instead of an attraction) since gravity effects objects with mass and so the antiparticles would be seperated from particles. What I am suggesting is that their is an anti-universe isolated from our universe and that during the big bang the two types of particles were split by gravity.

Energy = mass x speed of light squared. When matter collides (Such as this case with anti matter and matter) It produces pure energy, instead of having a mixed reaction which produced energy and a bi-product. It's one of the purest reactions known to this day.

I am not that know to this but i have a few questions. St1 how coud it be crated more matter than anti matter? St2 if you create antimatter and matter from nothing and they combine and explode, havent you crated energy from nothing?

Sir is there any chances of - more than 11 dimensions - end of time itself - if universes are in a membrane in the protons of the atoms then if a universe ends up will this affect any atom - can we separate electrons from an atom's nucleus's force. I will wait for the answee

@morphman86 your missing the point the actual question is "why are our atoms made from protons with a positive charge and electrons with a negative charge instead of protons with a negative charge and electrons with a positive charge" the names like in all cases are just used for abbreviation

how would you contain antimatter and how would you make it into a long time resource

We could be anti-matter to another universe. And the annihilation event that caused the big bang would have to have involved collisions of enormous bodies of matter and anti-matter. For all that amount of matter and anti-matter to collide simultaneously, we could be looking at the collision of maybe two galaxies (one matter and one anti-matter) in a previous universe. This is complex

He made an atom smasher in High school!!! :-o Couldn't understand negative electrons and he was making positive ones!!! :-o No wonder he is a such a great visionary. :) I like to hear from such people. Thanks a lot for uploading. :)

@MsSkateboardP Dark matter is now thought to be present everywhere around us, and to be of a kind that would not (easily) interact with out kind of matter. Like neutrinos they would just pass through us, so an asteroid would not be blocked by dark matter. Secondly, the energy produced by a single annihilation of a positron/electron is still not very high (equal to their rest masses). The rest mass of an electron is 8.1*10^-14 J according to Wikipedia.

I didn't hear him mention, but if he was making positrons to the point where he can see them, shouldn't that have been enough that they would react with either stray particles in the cloud chamber or react with whatever other particles might be in the chamber after he shuts it down and cause annihilation on a rather large scale?

If a particle and it's opposite antiparticle collide, you get annihilation. If you came into contact with the antiparticle version of yourself, every particle in both bodies is converted into energy (Mass-energy equivalence) at 100% efficiency since matter cannot be created or destroyed. It's the same concept of how particle-antiparticle collisions work in colliders to "create" exotic particles. They're not really created, instead the force carriers convert into other particles.

@Cruiser000x It's not hard to do. All you need is a glass chamber of low air pressure and high humidity. When you introduce your particles, push a plunger and increase the air pressure. The water will condense and the particles zipping around inside make vapor trails. Photograph these trails and you can study them. Bonus points for influencing your charged particles with a magnetic field. This is how antimatter was discovered in 1932, via cosmic gamma rays knocking electrons around

Theoretically, yes, there could be. Visually, they'd be indistinguishable, and would work exactly the same way, so we'd never know they were any different.

I am not sure about presence of antimatter as a student of physics I believe that it's only a theory however trying to prove it can lead us to more questions than answers. As far as anything that is considered anti anything it exists in an intellectual form for instance if one is social versus ant social etc. Things either are or they are not in terms of their physical form. Any or all the matter is formed into different things as it's being used it take different forms solids liquid gases etc. So can something be destroyed or completely make dissapeared "I don't think so"

Not necessarily, Anti Matter is incredibly volatile, it does not require the same quantity of Matter to annihilate. So a huge quantity of anitmatter might only come in contact with a very miniscule quantity of matter, and the whole thing would annihilate. The instant conversion of matter into energy that results pushes everything away in all directions like an explosion. Its very easy to see how matter would eventually outnumber anti-matter.

@Mtc529 It's a really difficult question to answer. It's sort of a pardaox, think about it, if anti-matter was 'the leftovers' it would be natural to us and the matter that makes up us in the state we are currently in we would call anti-matter and vice-versa. so no matter who won (matter or anti-matter) the opposite would always be the one that should not be. so it really doesn't matter what remained, just be thankful that you are you!! :D

Yea I know. The seen universe of baryonic matter makes up only a small part. That's fascinating. But I wonder, if dark matter has maybe similar characteristics like baryonic matter, would "anti-dark matter" be possible? Just like matter and antimatter. I wonder if dark matter has also an "opposite"

As i said. You can't understand what im talking about, if you have not meditated deeply. Try deep meditation practice (the practice of cultivating awareness, concentration to get insight). This is called "mindfulness meditation". When you practice mindfulness (or awareness), you see "things" much more deeply. Thinking is not awareness, thinking is a "thing" and awareness is "no-thing". You cannot understand nothing with "some-thing". It like if youre stuck on the bottom of the river, ..

What I don't understand is why the scientists don't put the antimatter into a container sealed tight enough so matter can't get to it! That way they could keep it around long enough to use it. Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that get overlooked...

the theory is space and time did not exist prior to the big bang, which was an infinitesimally small singularity point of extreme mass and gravity. If you were at the boundary of the universe and try to reach out it feels like a force field is blocking it, b/c space doesn't exist, just like if you were traveling at the speed of light you can not move your hand forward because your hand would be traveling faster than light.

And furthermore, Doppler was right. "Inertia is caused by the gravitational attraction of masses around the earth", he said. But he couldn't explain why the value of intertia was always the same when the masses around the planet are not uniformly distributed. Now we know that dark matter is indeed distributed that way. The old austrian was right again. Chapeau!

Interesting, according to string theory though the fusion or division of universes creates new universes, would this mean that an antiuniverse and a normal universe collided and created what we have now in our universe?

I like to think of it as balancing a semi-truck on an impossibly strong needle. Eventually one half of the truck will lose balance with the other half and it will avalanche to one side.
