I remember reading an article in 'Guitar Player' magazine years ago about how Keith was at a Lonnie Mack concert, and was "challenged" by Mack to do a tune together, obviously trying to 'show him up' and prove himself the 'better' guitarist. The reviewer made a point that has stayed with me ever since. He pointed out that, while Mack was ostensibly the "better", more technically proficient guitarist of the two, Keith "won" the contest, hands-down,by just being, far and away, more 'one' with his guitar. Every time Mack tried to out-do Keith on a lick, Keith would SUPPORT him and nod as if to say 'Yeah, you go, bro!" so it came down to not who was 'better', but who was the real 'guitar-man'. Keith. Always Keith. I'm SO glad I've lived in the years that I did, when this man was rocking the entire freaking world. There are few genuine rock virtuosos nowadays, and although it sounds trite and over-used, "kids today" literally have no idea what they've missed. The classic days of rock, of bands that literally created new genres through the genius of their compositional style and their amazing proficiency on their instruments, are sadly gone and will never come again. Think of the "CLASSIC ROCK " bands that took the basic rock formula...the Stones, Beatles, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Aerosmyth, REO, Styx, Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Rush, Kansas, Boston, Allman Brothers, the Cars, Tom Petty, J.Geils, Skynrd, Outlaws, and advanced it to undreamed of levels. Dear freaking god there were SO many that I should know better than to even TRY to begin listing them... lol Those of use who were fortunate enough to have lived during this age have an unspoken bond. No matter who your favorite band was, I'd be willing to bet that they were GREAT rock musicians and even if they weren't MY fave, I'd probably know at least a few of their tunes that I liked. We are ALL rockers in our hearts. At the end of the day, all I can say is... I guess ya just had to be there... and I'm glad I was.

With the exception of Billy Gibbons, they're all still singing pretty good at their age. But Mick seems to be on another level. While giving The Man the finger is an essential part of being a rock-n-roller, it's not the only one. Working your craft until the day you die is just as important. I can't help but wonder if Bono will be doing this kind of stuff at 70. Lord knows the popsters ain't. Can you see Beyonce, Katie Perry, Justin Bieber, or Taylor Swift doing this at 70!?! Keith said in his autobiography that he wrote his songs so that Mick could sing them, he literally wrote his tunes for his friend . Talk about two mates, these blokes make brothers look like a foreign word. How could a couple of English lads have this much soul/Blues? Amazing!

So happy for them that after decades together they are still on great terms! Unlike some others, like Gilmour and Waters who just can't stop their feud. Imagine that Mick and Keith have been friends long before the Rolling Stones! Seems like they've known each other for about 70 years (!!!!!)

August 1, 1969 - I just got off the plane as I returned from my ( unwanted ) combat tour in Viet Nam. This was the FIRST song I heard on a radio. It was a positive feeling / experience. Our platoon sniper was in our new barracks and passed me the Crown Royal. It was about half drunk and so was he. G. O. D. Good old days.

I have that same guitar, a 1960’s Martin 00-21. I can play this song. I cannot however make it sound like Keef. The best rhythm guitarist of all time for a reason.
