This video is absolutely stacked with Snowy Mountains fly fishing action! Mickey and Pat set out for a Lake Eucumbene Bonanza hoping for one last epic fishing session before the river season kicks off, and boy, did they hit the jackpot with an endless stream of superb rainbow and brown trout. The best part is, the lakes of the Snowy Mountains are going to continue getting better and better as the trout season progresses!
Presented by Mickey Finn

Great video Mickey (as usual)! When I've fished the lakes in the past (I prefer rivers) I have defaulted a lot to streamers. Since watching some videos, especially a number from the UK, I've noticed a lot of techniques (washing line etc) using boobies, blobs, F.A.B flies along with cormorants and buzzers. I think a lot of those were probably stocked fish, but those flies seemed surprisingly effective so I was wondering what your take was on these in our lakes... Eucumbene, Jindabyne and Tantangera, obviously, but then also smaller ones like Three Mile Dam, Dry Dam etc (do those have a higher proportion of stocked fish or different enough in other ways). The booby has a very interesting action at the bottom on sink tip or sinking line so it caught my interest (jokes aside about that!). I was intrigued after I saw one of Peachy's videos at a lake further East (from memory in the Blue Mountains?) that was early season using a blob and also a FAB with some success -- the fish were doing some interesting fake spawning behaviour pairing up so it doesn't surprise me that a blob could look like an egg fly would work, which I have used successfully before. Have you and would you again use some of those (popular in the UK) stillwater flies and when? I like those orange bead magoos you had in your box so maybe you would also need a compelling enough reason to change, lol

Cheers Alex! I do indeed fish buzzers, cormorants etc, on all different sinking line set ups and as the summer progresses I'll be fishing more dry's etc to (keep an eye out for an advanced lake technique video). I don't fish boobies or FAB's as much however they can be very effective on the right day. Generally if the fish are deep and shut down, hanging a booby in their face can be effective. The FAB's or Blobs tend to imitate a small swirl of tiny freshwater shrimp so they actually work quite well on wild fish too, not just pellet fed stockies. And you can fish them anytime. -Mickey

That could be good or bad news for me... I like tinkering but perhaps waste a lot of time on it! I will keep an eye out for that vid. I'll also try the boobies out since I bought a few and keen to see how those look moving on the end of a sink tip. Imitating freshwater shrimp makes me think about seeing how they go with natives but I've been reluctant so far to try sink tips or sinking line around snaggy structure. I'm also really keen to see how you work a team of dries on stillwater... I just don't see enough insects actually doing that when I'm out fishing so have been reluctant to try doing anything with dries other than dead drifts

Hi! I'm actually using two different sinking lines in this video but we break them down in another video on sinking lines that you can see here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ac6EddZ338i5l58.html

G,day Tom. Don't know what's going on but the hopper and beetle fishing has been shit house for the last decade, now just relying on midge snail and mudeye, tough got some ripper fish on damsel nymphs.

Yeah the hopper fishing has be slower at the lake the last few years with the wet weather (can't complain as they have eaten everything else) However this coming year with the warm weather and high lake levels hopper fishing will be insane! (fingers crossed)
