FLIR Thermal Imaging Camera Multimeter - Teardown & Repair!

While browsing eBay, I came across a broken FLIR Thermal Imaging camera multimeter. It was advertised as "for parts or not working" come join me on what turns out to be quite a roller-coaster ride!
I found the company that makes these quite unhelpful and they would not supply me with any parts due to "proprietary information"! Even though they do not even manufacture the parts required!
So I had to get creative....

Louis Rossmann would be proud to see you advocating for "Right To Repair". He is a huge proponent of R2R in the States. He lobbies legislators and speaks to legislative committees on this topic. He started out many years ago working on Apple phones and laptops and ran into constant problems trying to source replacement parts, board diagrams and proprietary troubleshooting software. Nice work troubleshooting the problem on this FLIR camera/multimeter. I dabble in repair myself but don't have a o-scope or other stuff like function generators and microscopes. We all do what we can. Clearly you have the skills and equipment to do quite a lot. Good on ya!

Thanks Adam. I've had my channel for quite a few years but I've only been doing it fairly seriously for about the last 6 months. It has grown quite significantly from when I started. Agree with most companies just want you to throw things away and not repair them. I remember when you used to get a manual with a schematic or the schematic was on a label inside a device. Alas you don't hardly get anything like that these days.

Ok, I definitely see the channel getting big with the content you’re making. Hopefully the likes of Lewis Rossman or NorthridgeFix soon. As for availability of parts, it will only come if companies are forced to do it. Right to repair. Lewis Rossman is doing great work with it.

I miss the days when you bought an electronic instrument, knowing it had a printed manual complete with a detailed schematic in the box. Sometimes, the instrument or appliance had a printed schematic stuck to the inside of the cabinet, too. Are those days gone forever? Everyone cites proprietary advantage protection as an excuse not to provide service information, but it seems to me they can omit critical details and still help us techs out with a few test points, waveforms, and block diagrams. Nicely done on the meter. I think you got a little lucky on this one, but well-deserved reward for your effort.

The goal is not to make things repairable beyond the guarantee period. If you can make the equipment last one month past the guarantee period then it is optimally designed, this tuning has been going on since brand loyalty was a thing and people buy the same brand even though they have been let down many times in the past.

Nicely done, you deserve the bodge of the year award! Very good sleuthing!. I suspect that something like this could have already been resupplied under warranty. And you got the broken one that wasn't even worth collecting. I got a samsung washing machine the same way, it was left out on the street because of a broken door, warranty replacement, only a few years old but not even worth collecting, just a single piece of plastic from one of these "adwash" door in doors. In my case a load of silicone and persistence got it right, and it has been working happily for over a month. You are braver when it comes to gambling on a broken one. But I guess you know where you are coming from. I took a punt on a modern heat pump tumble dryer, £40, all it needed to get it going was a careful clean, not even a particularly thorough one. I have posted a few videos of both repairs. If you keep at it like this subs and views will find you! Great stuff!!

Well done, sir! I have a goodly collection of older test equipment just to have schematics and proper service manuals. I have enjoyed some success repairing stupid-expensive things like AMX touch panels having broken screens with good displays from old laptops that can be had for $10. Also like to take advantage of company buy-outs…for example, Flir bought Extech, rebranded everything Flir, changed out Extech orange plastics for blue, but little internal changes. Extech devices often sell for much less than Flir. Fixed a Flir DVM similar to yours using parts from a dead, cheap, non-thermal Extech DVM with a good screen. $15 fix for a $600 meter. The DVM was complete toast; looked light it would if someone tried to measure 240 volts using the mA inputs :-)

I had a similar experience with a solar inverter and the company wouldn't give me the password for it to adjust a setting after I repaired it, I didn't give up and had to reverse engineer their software, and then write my own password generator. I then emailed them back the passwords for both of my inverters 😂😂Both the repair and the password shenanigans are on my channel 🙂

I emailed the company that took over manufacturing them and they said "it's an old model, buy a new one" pretty much. I ended up having to reverse engineer the software and I wrote my own service password generator which is available on the video to download. I also show all of the emails that went back and forward the same as on this video. You might like that one too. It's called "no password, no problem" 🙂

Awesome work-around! So since the display grounds pin 2, I'm assuming that in addition to jumping that line to the backlight PWM, you also lifted the pin from the display connector? This was an interesting fix -- I own one of these meters and this will be a valuable resource if it should fail in a similar manner down the road.

Thanks Blondie 👍 I checked the sizes first to make sure it fit, it was pretty much the same screen apart from the one pin that the FLIR processor was expecting to output, luckily my bodge seemed to take care of that. I second @bootsowen 's comment on you being very brave on that meter! The datasheet suggests floating the pin, but as it was stipulated on the original LCD this probably cause more trouble. Do you know what is meant by TE1 = TE? Is there a second pin on the LCD marked TE1? They must limit warranty repair units to the 1 year minimum otherwise they'd be perpetually replacing them. I managed to find a suitable clutch for a 40year old 2Stroke hedge trimmer from Ali Express. That shop comes in handy!
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian. I'm no sure about the TE1 as I couldn't see a TE1 pin on the pinout. It can be left floating if it's not used, but in this case it was being used to tell the processor that it had finished drawing that frame or something, but with my bodge it looks perfect anyway... Perhaps it might not update the image as quick or something? but it looks good to me! I was using it earlier on a board to see if I could see a heat spot... Yes AliExpress does come in handy!
@TheCunningFellow
@TheCunningFellow Жыл бұрын
@@BuyitFixit TE is "Tearing Effect". It is the frame flyback pin if you are native english speaking. I had a similar experience with random aliexpress displays having different pinouts. However in my case I was able to change a resistor position on the flex PCB to get access to TE

I'm surprised you didn't check the two fuses first thing. It wasn't that and it would be a worst design ever if a blown fuse for the input of a DMM were to cause a blank screen but, you know... When you said there was a couple of pins different on the new screen, I kinda hoped you'd have to break the trace and reroute them or something but what you did was even more impressive.

@peterensinger1770
@peterensinger1770 4 ай бұрын
unfortunately as you stated the warranty only is available to the original purchaser this should not be the case especially with it being a 10 year warranty this should be completely unconditional and available to all purchasers whether it was bought new or second hand the company could easily check the date of manufacture by the serial number and i feel the warranty period should start from the date of manufacture unless the purchaser can provide proof of purchase this would then allow subsequent purchasers to benefit from the 10 year warranty. failing that the manufacturer should be forced to provide spares and service data backup to enable the product to be repaired by a third-party repairer or repaired by the owner if they are capable of doing so. I used to repair consumer electronics mostly Tv sets and audio equipment i stopped doing repairs when it became dificult getting the spare parts and service manuals for the products this was around the time when CRTs started to dissappear and flat screens took over the first flat screens used to have service manuals available but the majority of the tv was the LCD panel and this was regarded as a single component and was deemed unrepairable and the manufacturer would charge almost the same price for the replacement panel as the price for the entire Tv set. I have done a few repairs mainly for family and friends these were mostly PSU repairs or replacing backlight LEDs. Great job with that meter. You are very lucky with that one. i am not surprised that the obscure Chinese seller of the display was much more helpful than FLIR !!
