Ring 12V Digital Automatic Tyre Inflator | Can I Fix It?

In this video we're going to be looking at a Ring 12V Digital Automatic Tyre Inflator purchased as faulty from eBay.
The seller said he'd taken it apart to see if there is a connection issue or maybe the motor had burnt out, and the motor and compressor works perfectly when 12v is applied directly to it. He also said he couldn't see any burnt out components or loose connections...
Let's have a look and see if we can identify the problem, and hopefully repair it.

Nice one Mick, good fix. I have the exact same tyre pump. As for the diode across the track, and the other diode that has a capacitor symbol, it's possible the board went through several design iterations, with components / tracks being changed to make it work, then the designer wasn't allowed to tidy things up once they got a working solution due to time / budget constraints. You can imagine the conversation: Engineer: Hmmm it doesn't work, what happens if I change this, and this, and this? I'll just bodge it quick to check. Ah, fixed it. Manager: Great, we're on a deadline, send the final PCB design to the factory. Engineer: No wait, I only bodged it, I need to redesign the circuit board so it's congruent with the new design. Manager: How long will that take? Engineer: Half a day to change the design, then a week to get a few made up ones back from the factory, then I'll have to run all the full suite of tests again including a soak test, to make sure I haven't broken anything else by mistake, at least 2 weeks. Manager: No, time for that. Engineer: But the PCB, it looks funny, people will laugh. Manager: Don't be daft, no one's going to look. This is a $20 disposable piece of consumer electronics, it will definitely never be repaired and streamed live on KZfaq for the world to see your folly. We don't want to miss out on a week's sales for your pride. Ship it! 😆

Another way of finding the faulty transistor might have been to check presence of drive voltage on the base and lack of switching of the collector.

A tip to keep it running for years, take the compressor apart and lubricate it with high temperature grease as they aren't well lubricated at manufacture. I presume the transistor was switching the relay but when polarity was reversed the bypass diode carried enough current to blow it. Might have been tempted to replace any electrolytics that have been subject to reverse volts to avoid future problems.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 10 ай бұрын
It could well have been the case. If the original owner was using the cigarette lighter adapter and then one day used the crocodile, clips which were incorrectly wired, then that might explain the sudden failure. Or perhaps he never used the crocodile clips and it was just a random failure 🤷‍♂️

I believe that may be a clamping diode. they are common in automotive relays to send the induced spike back through the coil when the relay coil is de energized
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 10 ай бұрын
It looks like D1 is the back EMF diode for the relay. The through hole diode I removed at the bottom of the board (marked for a capacitor and alternatively fitted at D12) is for back EMF from the motor. D11 I think they must have re-designed the board layout slightly but forgot to update the silkscreen and the pick and place machine perhaps.

Nice one, the only observation i'd make is, while you had both transistors off the board, i'd have checked them both to compare. after all it might have been something as bizarre as a dry joint, if that is actually possible with SMD?
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 10 ай бұрын
Yes dry joints are certainly possible with SMD. I did measure the transistors but usually you get a reading of around .5 or so, on the original one it was higher across the base and collector I think it was from memory. It's quite hard to measure them off the pcb as they have a habit of pinging off into the wild blue yonder 😂😂

Help please. DIYer - no expert here. I have a pump of similar construction. When on, pump splutters and dies with maybe 1 rotation of crank. Relay clicks. Mechanism good but motor notchy. Power to unit, 12v across board, on switch etc. 12v direct to motor from booster pack (pos and neg) and motor works fine! 6 sm resistors on rear all good. 2 A42 transistors NPNs test good. M7 diode voltage both ways so bad? 22microfarad capacitor discharged in situ, tested for resistance and dropped to 0v so open circuit and assumed bad? Understand it should trend to infinity. There's also a relay, I don't know how to test. Something on the board is defective. Many thanks 4 help :)
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 10 ай бұрын
You might need to remove M7 to test it properly, if it's wired across something such as a coil of the relay you might be reading that. If you disconnect the motor, and switch the pump on, does the relay click?

@Marver1ck83 10 ай бұрын
@@BuyitFixit Hi, thanks. Should have thrown it away for £20 new but I'm already in deep aha. Motor disconnected. Pushed power button and relay buzzes rather than clicks. Maybe 1/2 second. Buzzes again when I turn it off.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 10 ай бұрын
So the problem is before the relay I'd think. Sounds odd the relay buzzing. If you want drop me a picture of the board. Channel about page.. contact..for business enquiries. It doesn't show the button on mobile for some reason.

@@BuyitFixit Thanks. I think I'm just going to solder the 12v switch direct to the motor and have done with it. Although I've learnt alot from this exercise, it isn't worth any more of mine time and defo not urs. But before hand, can you share any knowledge about the capacitor. This was one component I struggled with, especially as I don't have a farrad multimeter. Should I get 0v on the diode setting across the terminals?
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 10 ай бұрын
You can't tell doing that. It's like trying to measure length with a stopwatch. I'd recommend getting one of those component testers like I have. They are around £15 and are very useful for all types of components.

I noticed it was inverted on the scope but thought it might go through a transistor so it displayed correctly on the LED. I didn't take a lot of notice of the LEDs at the time.

What’s the betting that the former owner has a similar connector on a different device with the opposite polarity - and inadvertently used the wrong lead ?

I'm not sure on that, I was thinking he probably just use the cigarette lighter adapter as most of these types of things usually come with one of those attached and he probably never tried the crocodile clips.

Been rather remiss with your videos of late, just catching up now. Initially I thought when you had the first connection problem, this will be a short vid. Then you found the croc clips reversed, thought same, then of course, why would you do a 40 min vid if you fixed it quick :-) I have one exactly the same, bought it to try to run my Steam Roller but of course need more volume output for it. Had an idea of making a little trailer with a 12v battery and compressor, then run the 1" scale engineer built roller on air, not found the right compressor yet though. 😞

Bit of good news about Nathan. He has passed his full ham exam. Also went to get a bottle of gas for the boat and when he got back he had picked the empty bottle up instead of the full one. He is still active on the ham forum and seems quite well. Don’t think you need to worry about him, except that he is not responding to you :-) or almost anyone else except for radio buddies. He has been out and about on his bike a bit, setting up his radio and getting various contacts. I want to try to get his new call sign in my log. I did manage to talk to him briefly while I set up near Hurst Castle on our last visit to the New Forest

There was one for that across the relay. The 'spare' diode we think was an error as there was a solid track underneath it.

I think that it was pretty obvious it was going to be that transistor at fault.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 11 ай бұрын
It was pretty much one of the first things I checked and the readings initially didn't seem bad. I guess I was getting readings from some other components, but it could have easily been burnt contacts in the relay, or the signal from the MCU or a crack in one of the traces...

Just an educated guess that the PCB and components may be similar to another PCB model, and perhaps they run out of PCB's and the mindless Err-zoned out assembler soldered that sucker in as if it were the other PCB revision or model where the track doesn't exist. Oh.. and it could be on one side the soldering was inadvertently bridged to where it shouldn't be..
