Took three months to eventually get the capacitor, but that didn't fix the issue. The diode and the silver square box above it (the inductor?) get bloody hot. I've waited so long for the cap and to not have it work is heartbreaking. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if I'm testing shorts, but I'm assuming the diode is dead like yours. Fingers crossed, delivery is estimated for 4 to 8 weeks. @@BuyitFixit

The diode should measure a reading one way, and nothing when you swap the leads around. If you get a low reading both ways then it has gone.

Thanks Mr Fixit! I've packed it away out of bitter disappointment for now and beginning the hassle of finding a single diode and not a reel of 100! From memory it had a resistance of 1000 one way and 700 the other way, and with power it's reading 4v instead of 48, but reads 48v everywhere before the diode. The chip looks fine visually, but if the diode doesn't fix it, I'm giving up and looking online for a second hand one :) Your video has been such a huge help, thank you!@@BuyitFixit

Thanks, yes although if it's a no power type of repair, I'd normally start where the power comes in and start working from there, so it wasn't really that far into the circuit.

I just bought the Kaiweets Thermal on Amazon and it's fantastic. Normally lists for 300, they had a "limited time deal" for 240, then an additional 10% off right now, then there was some other promotional 10%, so I got it under 200 bucks.

Hopefully it's just the diode.. if the chip has failed and you don't have the equipment I'd suggest possibly a local repair cafe if there's one in your area? I volunteer at our local one where people bring in broken items, and we try to repair them and they can give a small donation if they wish. If not then perhaps a makerspace or something might be able to help. Let me know how you get on as it would be great to know my video helped you successfully repair it! 👍

Thanks👍. Yes the thermal camera is great for finding shorts like that. I don't mind helping this guy out as he's a good friend and the one helping me rebuild the car currently. It's a Mercedes ML320 and oil was literally pouring out from the bell housing on the gearbox. Approx a good mug full after it was idling for a couple of minutes. We had the gearbox out a couple months back and replaced the main crankshaft oil seal as that seemed like the likely cause. Refitted the gearbox, driveshafts etc, same issue. Turns out a common problem with the OM642 engine is the oil cooler seals which you have to strip down a fair amount of engine to get to as its right in the bottom of the V (V6 diesel engine). We've had to remove the Air intakes, heat shields, exhaust pipes rear of the engine, turbo, injector manifold, injector pipes, inlet manifolds, swirl flap motor, wiring harness and god knows what else. It's a fair old job! and awkward as hell as you have to be pretty much kneeling on the engine to do most if it as the car is pretty high, and most of the stuff is at the back so you can't reach it standing at the front. That's why my hands are in such a state. I also can't get away wearing gloves as I need to feel things like nuts and bolts. It's been off the road for about 5-6 months now as I've had too much other stuff to do along with a couple of health related issues. We've been working on it again today as I've got most of the replacement parts now (mainly gaskets), so hopefully we get it back working again sometime next week fingers crossed!

Good luck in finishing that crank oil sea repair. They are a nightmare as everything has to come off to reach it unless you have a lift and can drop the whole lot out the bottom. Takes me back to the 80s when i had my Mach 2 Capri gearbox balancing on a Express Dairy milk crate as i was laying underneath and using a cut off gearbox splined shaft to align the new clutch and tensing my belly up to push that bell housing home😂. Took me an hour and a half from start to finish. I wouldn't attempt it now though,i might not get up from under the car again.😁. Good luck Mick & all the best. P.S i used to use fairy liquid and sugar yo get the ground in oil out of my hands and nails. Swarfega was always the thing i ran out of just when i needed it !

That's a very odd coincidence. My first car was a mk ii capri and I too remember lying underneath it and changing the clutch with a cut off spine off an old gearbox to align it too! 😂😂😂

I doubt it, as this has a power supply brick to power it. It could just be a coincidence or the power going off and on a few times quickly. A surge protector would have only protected the power brick as that's where the mains comes in.

If the power supply you have used doesn't have enough amps to drive the hard drive that may cause the problem, or if the hard drive has failed. I think those are the first things I'd be checking.

I'd check the voltage going into the unit, and see if you are getting voltage out of the regulator like I tested. If you're getting voltage in, but nothing from the regular then it has probably failed like in this one.

I'm not sure, I don't recall seeing anything like that.

If it's the same model as this one, check the diode at the left hand side and see if it's shorted. I had a comment from someone else with the same problem and that diode was shorted.

I volunteer at something called a 'repair cafe' where people in the local community can bring broken items and we attempt to repair them for free (they have to pay for parts if required). There's a number of these across the country so they should be one near you. If it's the same problem as this, you could point them in the direction of my video as I know a couple of other people's DVRs had the same issue.

Some items are listed multiple times as a reel or cut tape. So there is usually a choice of 100 or perhaps 5 or 1. There's also Farnell, Digikey, Mouser, Ebay and Aliexpress. All have advantages and disadvantages just as potential fakes or expensive shipping costs. Hope that helps 🙂
