Micro Fire Starting Kit Howto

This is NOT a lighter! It's a much smaller emergency-use kit to start a campfire: a SPARKER with tinder, for key chain carry. Like a DIY "Spark Lite" spark generator (but a complete fire KIT because it conveniently carries ready-to-use tinder) made from an empty Mini BIC lighter. I didn't think it up, but this is the first KZfaq construction tutorial for it I know of.
This micro fire kit carries a store bought, "waterproof" Tinder Quik in its hollow handle but most people carry cotton balls mixed with petroleum jelly in these, I believe. The tinder gets me going in an emergency when I can't rustle up any other sources or when all the available sources are dripping wet from recent rain, plus it is also smaller than the Spark-Lite, has a keychain mount, and it's practically "FREE"! I carry it for emergency survival situations.
The company which sells Tinder Quiks claim it is waterproof but my limited testing suggests it really needs to dry out some before it will ignite. I only gave it a brief test though. YMMV.
Hypothermia is a leading cause of death when people get stranded unexpectedly in the wild. You can live without water for a day or two, even longer without food, but hypothermia can kill you in just hours. Being able to build a campfire in an emergency is one of, if not THE most important survival skills out there! People often only pack a thin jacket thinking they are just going for a brief hike that afternoon, only to find they twist their ankle or get lost in the middle of the woods, and once the sun sets the temperature plummets. This can be very dangerous. Carrying this tiny thing, half the size of a pen cap, may save your life some day!
Besides warmth, fires also provide light, signaling, smoke signaling, repel animal/insects, boil water to sterilize it, cook food, etc..
According to BIC a new Mini J5/J25 lighter has "more than enough sparks" for approximately 1450 successful lights.
Many people have already contacted me to suggest buying Clipper lighters because their sparker is already removable, but then where's the fun in making your own? [Plus they don't have a chamber to store tinder.]

This is really fun! Thank you. A small ranger band might be a nice addition. Use the tinder-quick to light it and it will burn for a long time. I always have a small blade, and a small piece of the band impaled on a twig works well to light a fire when it's damp.

I know you don't make as much new content as you used to MeZillch. But do know that your videos, old and new, are absolutely awesome. Yours aren't just good ideas about specific things. You demonstrate an ethos of resourceful inventiveness; of seeing utility and multiple uses in items most of us think of as disposable or single function. I came back to this particular video because I found a dead Bic lighter while walking along a country road. I thought: "MeZillch had a way to make this into an emergency fire starting kit. I should find that old YT video and try it out." Just wanted you to know that your videos continue to inspire. They have real staying power and are appreciated even years after they were initially viewed.

Or you can get a zippo, fill it with extra flints and not do any work. Plus, it's much more durable, with easy parts replacement. Much more room for tinder. Or a regular bic. Use it with fuel. If it runs out, cut the bottom off, stuff it with vaseline, tip it with some cotton, then duct tape it shut. Now you have flame, tinder, firestarter, and cordage. And can carry it easily on a keychain.

I personally keep my key ring minimalist with just 3-4 keys, and hooked to a small pepper spray so I have a quick and effective defense tool when I'm most vulnerable (while opening/locking main house door). Where I live (PH), due to the constantly high humidity it's just way better to bring a lighter or two all the time instead of any kind of fire starter that doesn't have readily combustible fuel in/on it. Because of this I always have a mini BIC in the car and in all my bags and pouches - big and small alike. I prefer this kind of redundancy to relying on one survival kit that could get misplaced, stolen, lost or left behind in the event of the kind of emergency that causes people to run in a panic (terrorist attack, domestic or international unannounced breakout of war, instant natural disasters that require evacuation such as a flash flood, flash fire, earthquake, etc.) I've been a survival instructor for 5 years sometime ago, and I've lit fires and taught students the same using many different techniques, and I really have say it here that using any sort of firestarter without readily combustible fuel is a big waste of time and energy, and these two are super precious things if and when a true survival situation arises. Even ferrocerium rods and magnesium firestarters fail to work when ambient humidity hits 90% or more. Heck, when it's that humid, it truly is a skill in itself to find dry enough tinder and kindling material, in the woods or in an evacuation center. A gas lighter has an adequate amount of fuel to dry combustible but damp material. Maybe the appeal of your contraption lies in its novelty, especially for most people who haven't tried tropical bushcraft in their lives, but in my experience, in the absence of a gas lighter or stove, you'd do well to have one of these - a piston firestarter (can ignite a small, reasonably dry piece of clothing without the use of a consumable part such as a flint; compact and can be EDC'd in a bag but practically useless dead weight most of the time), a rope lighter if you actually bring and use rope in the jungle (as we did before; still uses flint, and not advisable for EDC as it's useless too for regular daily tasks), or - and this I recommend as EDC - a small 5x plastic fresnel lens. The last one is even useful for many tasks beside starting fires, it's cheap, and it doesn't even have to be in your survival kit - you can have one in every bag as well as in your wallet.

In a normal world when you use up a roll of something, say tape, you walk over to your storage closet and grab another. Done. Having a "gas gauge" on your remaining resources helps you dispense them more judiciously.

For people like me, who don't smoke, the idea to carry a pocket lighter seems bizzare. Obviously in an ideal world we perpetually carry a survival kit in our pocket, 24/7/365, but most people balk at the bulk and weight so THEY DON'T. The purpose of this tiny device, you perpetually carry on your keys, is you are always capable of starting a fire every time ou leave your house, assuming you can have your keys on you and can find fuel to burn.

Why do you need to remove the spark wheel and then replace it? Is there a problem with just leaving the wheel where it is?
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. It's been six years since I fiddled with this but if I remember correctly the reason you need to fully dismantle it is because you want to remove the unnecessary red butane release button and the spring underneath it [maybe even more? I forget.] to minimize size and bulk. [Remember the goal is how small and light can it be made for your keys, although I'd agree these removed parts are trivial in mass.] These parts are difficult or impossible to remove without full disassembly. It's also important to remove the metal spark spray guard so that you can get a robust, wide spark spray which you don't with the guard in place. Since this metal part also holds/supports the plastic yoke that holds the wheel, the paper clip is added to replace the reinforcement the metal guard once provided.

@MeZillch
@MeZillch 6 жыл бұрын
The Vaseline, or other oil, increases the burn time, which helps you get a fire going, but the ignition is due to the dry, airy hair-like structure of the cotton ball. Don't add too much oil or you soak the fibers and when "wet" they don't light as easily. Leave one side of the cotton ball dry, puff it up so it is filled with air (like cotton candy) and that side should light.

It is a strong spring but the lighter button can be held down to leak out all the butane, OUTDOORS, by taping it down for maybe half an hour or so, with some non-flexible tape (so NOT duct tape). Clear tape should work and don't skimp because that spring is strong!. Obviously do not breathe it in nor dispense the gas near an ignition source nor pets, kids, etc..

I'm sure that someday I may regret not taking this video seriously but I think I'll take the money I could have made during the time it took to watch this video and buy a few more lighters to stash away. In addition I watched Sooch try to use one of these the other day and he had quite a time holding and sparking it at the same time, looks too small for me too. Thanks..... Oops, sorry just got back to the realization that this is about micro sized gear. So... there comes a point where the items you may choose are just too small for average folks to manipulate successfully, which makes them useless. So everyone needs to judge and adapt these items for them selves and their own dexterity level. For myself, I think the smallest sparker/lighter I could manipulate would be the 1/2 size bic. Maybe wrap it in a foot or so of waxed jute twine, a wide ranger band holding it together and then sealed with a single length wise wrap of duct tape pinched together around the edges to seal it. The duct tape done this way so that 1it can be simply cut or torn open, as when cold or with cold fingers, multiple wraps of tape are tough to get open. That would give you a pretty small water tight package with spark, gas and 3 types of tinder. Not micro size but small enough to have a few stashed around in different places. The best videos are the ones that get my thinking, thanks again.

@@MeZillch well we all have to make certain comprises, my key ring is already to full of keys to think even consider adding anything more. It's funny though, that after stopping smoking over a year ago I still get comfort from carrying a full size lighter in my front pocket snuggled in with a pocket knife. I'll admit that many times the lighter is merely fidget toy, but I do use it enough to keep it close.

The metal casing that is taken off first has nothing to do with how the wheel sits inside of the two pieces that hopd I, t you must have bent it or it must have went in crooked. I haven't finished yet so maybe the paperclip has another part to okay but for that it shouldn't be needed lol.
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 5 жыл бұрын
The metal part which is removed blocks much of the spark spray so even if you're right that it doesn't help keep the wheel in place and prevent the yolk from splaying, it is best to remove it.

@MeZillch

This video is over 11 minutes long. If I showed everything at normal speed instead it would have been over half an hour, which is objectionably long such that many people would have passed it by. Select KZfaq's slow motion option while the video is playing in "Settings" if you wish to watch any part in greater detail.
@MeZillch
@MeZillch 6 жыл бұрын
An alternate method for this step, not shown, is to hold the spring and/or flint w/ spring down in place with the side tip of a small keychain-sized knife blade (such as the Victorinox Classic Swiss Army knife) with one hand while you re-insert the wheel with your other hand. Holding the lighter in a vise as you do this may also help since it gives you a "third hand".

Yes the part where you replaced the spring and flint then reattached the wheel...thanks I'll try that...slow motion ?
@MeZillch

For slow motion: While a video is playing and in motion hit the gear wheel in the lower right below the KZfaq image, called "settings" to select "speed" and then a slower playback such as half speed or one quarter speed.

It is a super tiny, "free", one handed spark generator you make yourself from an empty BIC, with an emergency stash of tinder stored internally if you need it, an optional keyring mount, and the kit comes with no wood for the fire. A traditional ferro rod takes two hands to generate sparks and does not contain any emergency supply of tinder. Sorry I couldn't fit that all into the title so you feel duped.

Wtf. "Trying to start a fire using a firesteel and striker using just one hand would be nearly impossible". You just put a rock with sharp edge, a knife or anything with an edge, on the floor and block it with your foot. And you scrap your firesteel on it. Done. In very cold conditions, with big gloves, it's even more easier than your small bic ;)
@MeZillch

On the "floor"? Aren't you, in this scenario, stuck in the woods, where you are cold, wet, tired, have at least one injured hand, and it's dark? If its so "easy" to do this why are there no videos depicting it on KZfaq?

And the real genius of this video is that the essentials of the ferro-cerium spark mechanism can be stripped down to a tiny apparatus that can be attached to your key chain. So you'll always have it with you even if you inadvertently left the larger, fully functional lighter at home.

@CommonSensePeople
@CommonSensePeople 6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all sparking devices are useless in the rain, in wet conditions you are far better off with a survival match or something similar. In the wind, a proper fire steel would be far better than a little lighter sparker as the large shower of sparks is far better than the pittance that a lighter flint makes. The long and short of it is when you are in a true survival situation trying to survive until rescue or escape can be made....you would be far better off with even the cheapest of proper survival gear than a carved up lighter. The potential loss of heat, clean water, safe food, and even the moral that a fire provides is not worth cheaping out on.
