This video is absolutely beautiful. The way it was shot and graded really showcases the potential usage of this lens. (Question: What software did you use for grading?). I've been considering it for a long time (travel photo and video) but kept pushing it off thinking I needed something "better" (brighter). Your video proves that I don't. I own an E-M5 Mark II and love the small and cheap Panasonic 25mm 1.7 with it but find it a little tight in most indoor situations. I'm not too thrilled about overly wide shots either so I'm assuming the 35mm equivalent focal length is just perfect along with the size. I'm excited to get this lens. Thank you.

This lens, and the Olympus 25mm f1.8, are a great match with all the Panasonic m43 cameras. I enjoy using it with the G9 as a walkaround video and photo lens. The f1.2 Pro version is much larger with great image quality, but the f1.8 is very low profile.

I love your review style! that music and your voice is so relaxing lol. love the look you got from the 17! I'd probably have to stop it down. not like im aiming for super shallow depth of field at 35mm anyways, that's where the M.Zuiko 45mm f1.8 shines! i was going for the 75 next, but this might be more useful... thanks for giving me something to think about!

Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah I agree with your points. stopping down the lens helps further with the sharpness. the 45 and 75 are also wonders for different purposes. cheers!

Excellent video, I love your colour render, looks clean and flat - I own this lens, I love it but I am having a lens clear out and the Olympus 17mm is being sold, along with my Panasonic 14-140mm. Let me explain why: I own the Leica 25mm 1.4 which is the default lens I have attached to my GX85, 50mm eqv is my favourite focal length. However, I recently went traveling for two weeks and forced myself to take only two lenses, the Panasonic 14-140 and the Olympus 17mm. When I returned and loaded everything into Lightroom and cleaned up what I liked, I discovered that I only had 38 photos that I liked from the Olympus 17mm - of the 38 photos only 11 were shot at under f4. As for the Panasonic 14-140mm, I only had 11 photos which were shot at a focal length greater than 45mm. The majority of the photos I liked were shot on the Panasonic 14-140 at 14mm and 24-30mm. So with all that in mind I have now decided to sell the Olympus 17mm and the Panasonic 14-140mm and buy the Olympus 12-45mm f4 as my all in one travel lens. For my travel requirements I think the Olympus 12-45 f4 combined with my Leica 25mm 1.4 will be a great compact combination.
@raksh9
@raksh9 Жыл бұрын
Your rationale is very understandable, given your uses. I have been overseas with a number of lenses and found that the Olympus 17 got a lot of use for general photography, as it is a very compact lens with versatile focal length and wide aperture. The Panasonic 12-35 also got a fair bit of use, but I preferred the rendering and handling of the 17 on the E-M5 and GX85. Next trip, I'll probably take the GX85 and GM1 with the Oly 12/2, 17, 25 and 45 f1.8. The whole kit will fit in a tiny shoulder bag and be highly versatile, able to shoot in any situation.

I considered this lens but went with the weather sealed 16mm sigma. I really wanted a lens smaller for my GX85, G9 and EM5 Mark 3 but they just don't have it. I'm thinking my only choice the fuji 100v.

I bought the Oly 17mm f1.8 recently, l also have a GX80 and I agree with all you said. Such a great little lens. I have the Oly 45mm f1.8 too, of you don't have that yet, you should get it because it will give you more bokeh. I think the Olympus primes are all excellent. For price and IQ, you can't do better.

Hi Michael, thanks for suggesting the Oly 45. I already got a panny 42.5 and absolutely love it. Was deciding between it and Oly but leaned toward the more standard 85mm equivalent focal length and image stabilizer. But I heard a lot of good things about Oly

I also own the GX80/85 and I mostly use the Lumix 25mm f1.7 as an everyday lens for general photography, but especially for portraits. I really like the standard focal length 25mm, but looking for a more wide angle lens and I'm really interested in this one, the 17mm f1.8. I notice that you own the Leica 25mm f1.4 and just wonder how you would describe the differences between the 25mm and the 17mm.
@PaulUSCEE
@PaulUSCEE 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, I normall have different mindsets when deciding which one to bring out if I only want to bring out one lens. For the 25mm, like what you mentioned, is good for portrait and good for general photography, especially if I know I want to shoot some more detail/close-up shots and want some. On the other hand, if I know I will be mostly indoors, or want to show case more of the environment, or more 'visitor' photos, I will bring out 17mm.

@@PaulUSCEE Got it! Thanks for your input. I have another question. Do you have any experience using the Leica 15mm f1.7? I try to decide which wide angle lens I want to get. I've read a few comparisons between these two lenses but haven't really seen a video comparison here on youtube. Perhaps it really doesn't matter which one I decide to get since the differences aren't that big. What do you think, any thoughts?

 @Daniel Sandin Hey did you get the 17mm ? I'm struggling between choosing between (17mm 1.8 + 25mm 1.7) or (17mm 1.8 + 45mm 1.8) as my first pair of lenses for my brand new GX85, I can only afford 2 lenses for now
@danielsandininjusto
@danielsandininjusto 3 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminkats3401 no not yet. I still can’t decide between the Olympus 17mm f1.8 and the Leica 15mm f1.7. I can’t speak for the 45mm since I haven’t used it, but the 45mm + the 17mm sounds like a nice combination since there’s a bigger variety between those two compared to the 25mm and the 17mm. But I can only speak for the 25mm f1.7 and I absolutely love it and if I had to choose just one lens, I would probably get the 25mm.

Hi thanks for tuning in! I was choosing between the 17mm and leica 15mm before went for the 17mm. Reason being the more 'standard' focal length and the focus clutch. also it's cheaper than the 15mm. but I heard a lot of good things about the 15mm as well. I don't think you will go wrong with either

Mostly you just demonstrated how soft the lens is. I have it and while I love the angle of view it drives me nuts the lack of sharpness. The Panasonic 20mm is better in every way except focus speed. I wanted to love this lens, but viewers should know the truth.

Thanks for sharing your experience Mark. For all my videos I turned down the digital sharpness all the way and add a bit of blur in post. For photos, I do decrease clarity as well if it fits the vibe and one is out of focus a bit. I probably shouldn't have talked about sharpness while using that photo. But from my personal experience, I think this lens is sharp enough for me. Your experience might very but it's good to hear everyone's opinion. Cheers
