Excellent video, but looking at my Google AWG conversion chart, AWG6 is 16mm2 and AWG8 is 10mm2 the AWG16 is correct with 1.5mm2 , maybe they tricked you with your chart? So those 3 together give you just AWG10.

You don't need the second rectifier! Once you switch it from your bypass switch to the braking resistors it does not matter what the electric is AC or DC will both produce heat and therefore use energy causing your braking effect! The only thing to watch out for is the voltage rating of the resistors should not be exceeded (not likely to be an issue)! Another issue is that the "conduits" need to have the feed and return running within one tube. If you run feeds down one tube and returns through another you will induce magnetic losses and get electrolytic corrosion of the tubes! It would be good to both earth the tubes and to ground them as it could be a great lightning rod ........ and That could turn your day bad really quickly!

I was wondering if I could just connect my turbine to resistors only and apparently I can. Which is a good thing to help heat my garage. Love your videos. Quite helpful. I'm going to have an extra 24 volt turbine. Had to order a 48 volt 5 blade to charge my 24 volt batteries. Thanks again for all the info you post.

@@Lord_Joseph17 The kit is a Wind turbine, 3 phase to DC controller and you provide batteries. If you have lower winds ( under 13 average ) get the 5 blade. They make rated power of 500+ watts at 23.5 mph and higher. Mine has hit over 1100 watts in 35 mph so be sure to run 8AWG wire at least. Or something equivalent. If you stay with one turbine you only need the provided controller. If you add more, you will need to change the set up to like mine I recommend at least 1600 watts solar, 2 - 60 amp MPPT controllers, 8 GC2 batteries and 1 or 2 of these wind turbines to get a full use of wind and sun power. If you need info on proven stuff let me know, you can't get into this by budgeting wrong or experimenting, that's very costly if you make a mistake.

Thank you for the answers. I think that I don't trust the sun in the sence they are always chem spraying our skies. So I'll go with two 5 blades wind turbine and whatever else you tell me. I have blind faith in you. I just have to figure out with my local weather station what are the wind averages 👍 GOD bless my friend

THANKS so much for ALL your helpful and informative videos !!! QUESTION - could you use an electric (normally 120vac) heater as a load instead of those BIG 100w resistors ? I have small heaters (can do 500w, 1000w, 1500w) or baseboard type but big resistors are hard to find/get !!!

Hi John, i have been researching on wind power and I ended up on your channel, to say the least I have watched most of your videos on wind power and I am impressed by the setup you have. Very informative and encouraging I must say. I have collected alot of info from you. I still have some questions though. I need to know, what charge controller do you use for your solar setup? How do you link up the solar power to the wind power at the battery bank? Is it through one controller or do they each have their own controller then the connections? Will it stop them from being parasitic? When you switch on the braking system for the turbine, does the battery bank still charge when the turbine turns slow? Or does it all go to the resistors? For the turbine can you use a normal mppt charge controller on it? I am aiming for a setup similar to yours but scaled down with just one turbine and two 100w solar panels. Where I live we have sun(no cold winter's at the equator) throughout the year and wind too is adequate for a turbine.

Hello. My name is G. Montserrat (U.S Army Retired Veteran) and I live on top of a mountain here in the Island of Puerto Rico where I use solar and wind renewable energy because the electric energy grid in the Island is not reliable. As of three days ago, I am using the (Braking Protocol) that you teach in your channel and I have to report to everyone that "IT WORKS PERFECTLY". Yes, it comes in from the wind turbine to the "3 Phase CAM Switch" from there to a "Rectifier" and from the Rectifier to the "Dump Load Resisters". Now I have total control of the BEAST (Turbine), and I can stop this thing for maintenance and emergencies when I choose to do so. As for the system "Metering", I would like to find out which ones you are using. I am talking about the three black rectangle black parts that give you: Amps, Watts and Volts.

Respectfully, the math at 6:36 is very misleading. While it is true that the diameter of the 16 gauge wire is roughly a third of that of a 6 gauge wire, the cross section area (which is what drives the maximum amperage) goes by the square of the diameter and thus 6 gauge is more like 9x 16 gauge. Three 16 gauge wires are absolutely not equivalent to a 6 gauge wire.

Wire size appearance physically is near 6 awg, but it's a actual material mass of about 8 awg which is the goal to get a result of 8 in energy to handle. Most are told to use 10awg for these turbines of 500 to 600 watt and that's a power loss and risk. Note I refer to 8awg as the goal, but 6awg as the physical similarity. Using it Over 8 years on numerous turbines with occasional high wind peaks of 800 watts and 450 continuous the outcome has been great.

@@JOHNDANIEL1 If you look at cross section areas, which is what matters, 16 AWG is 1.31 sq mm. Three times that is 3.93 sq mm. That's much less than 8 AWG (8.37 sq mm) or even 10 AWG (5.26 sq mm). Three 16 AWG wires is closest to (but still a bit less than) a single 11 AWG wire (4.17 sq mm).

OK, Good suggestion. Just tried it. I stripped new wires off the 16/3 and left each stranded, not twisted. Odd, It won't fit in a NEMA card for wire sizing of 10 awg, or the 9 awg hole unless I peel about 6 or 8 tiny strands away, and does go into 8 though with just about enough room to slide in without forcing. Checking the piece of 8 AWG solid I had its fitting the same way. Maybe its Chinese gauging! Like 15.3 in their 16 AWG speaker wire, very common thats found. However I removed 10awg stranded from the HYE Windmax 500 watt 12 volt turbine (what they said to use) I had ran of 54 feet and replaced it with this 8 years ago and went from wires getting hot to not a problem anymore. So something is definitely better!

@@JOHNDANIEL1 Twisting the wires also makes the size slightly larger because they spiral rather than lay straight as they are while inside the shielding. However, most gauge guides also don't mention number of strands which will also affect load capabilities. Just like the Pirate Code, amp ratings on gauged wire are more like guidelines anyway. As a heavy diesel tech turned aerospace engineering major I can tell you I trust your real-world experiences with these systems over most things calculated on paper. I noticed the diameter vs cross sectional area discrepancy as well but Torres already covered it. Still a great video and have enjoyed you sharing all your wisdom on these topics for us. And I still went out and bought a 16g 100ft extension cord to wire up my newly purchased turbine. :-)

Hey John can you connect multiple wires like this to a circuit breaker like say 100a one if they are all soldered together onto a ring terminal and clamped down with a nut? I keep reading that your not supposed to double tap the circuit breakers like this because the wires could come lose but surely what I said is a solution? Unless there's another problem with doing that...

Yes, its a insurance institute rule not to do it, not a physical reality that it will not work. Auto manufactures often double wire a single circuit in chassis wiring to increase ampacity and its been that way since day one.

Depends on what you plan to power. If you like off the shelf stuff and think a Cabin, Survivalist, Prepper, Camper, Underground nuke shelter, tiny house with lower battery fail rates then 12 volt. Big home, lotsa money for 24 volt power stuff, and you plan to make it real big then for sure 24 or 48 volt.

Hello sir. Your videos are awesome. I haven't put up my kt 7 thermodyne yet. But I bought a cutting edge power brake switch before I researched why NOT to use a brake switch. It is essentially the blue switch you have in your video there. How many coffees could I buy you to show me how to rewire it to do your safe brake setup. I have resistors. A charge controller and 2 rectifiers, so it's really a matter of what wires go where. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cutting Edge, Give me a minute while I think how profitable it must be to make 700% profit without guilt! Taking a $9 Cam Switch and a $6 box to sell for that price used to be illegal! OK, as for the brake switch and high wind passive loading circuit I created about 15 years ago I think about 10,000 people have copied it, seems to have saved a equal amount of turbines. Send me a Email and I can soon as I have some time to help I will get you a schematic and parts list to work from. Usually I catch up with Emails in a week. Still gathering my bits and bobs for my 24V 500W turbine set up. Only real hold back right now is waiting for Batteries. Eaaa Going without the Chiniesium Chinso Controller. Just Diode Pack and DIY CC / CV Buck Converter Charge controller I think. What kinda Voltage do these this pump out ? More then 50VAC ? More ? Ok, Three 6 Ohm Parallel Resistors or 2 Ohm or heating element . Is that controller you have there MPPT ? Some claim so but are only PWM. Thank You !

Just be sure to get all your batteries at one time. A 24 volt model open voltage in a wind storm can hit 140 volts AC 3 phase easy, its a 6x factor rating in max conditions. But batteries keep it under control just fine. Math is 6x12 for 12 volt, 6x24 for 24 volt and the odd ball, 5x48 for 48 volt. If its a lot different than that in open voltage you may have a falsely rated or different winding like STAR verses DELTA.

@@JOHNDANIEL1 Can't see one pumping out like that unless it was like Open Circuit. But yep, guess it's possible. I'll have a braking system kicking in well before it gets that high. 30VDC or abouts. A bit over 85% off currently. We still have the water well, my 220 volt welders and for a 1500 watt heater a 35 foot RV is a bit over half itself on the grid due to winter. But that is up from 60% a few years ago.

If it's a permanent magnet generator then open volts won't matter as long as you have sufficient battery

Why do you use 12V wind turbines instead of 24V or 48V? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to any of those? Love your vids, keep up the good work!

Preppers commonly go 12 volt, those who are survivalist trained and many former military do. Everyone else does the higher voltages. The reason is parts availability, salvageable materials and off the shelf preference. Means you loose on battery or inverter you can hit Walmart or a Truck Stop or wrecking yard and be back to full ability. Higher volt users can not.

Yes, install these into your hot water tank, 1" IP thread, amzn.to/3KBwRHA and if you stay under 350w/750w DC 12/24v DC watts you can use the thermostat on the heaters for 1500 to 2500 watt elements. We got 2 of the 300 watt, both in a 30 gallon older electric, apartment complexes the best source for them free after they pass 5 year warranty.

I am wondering, is there a braking system or some type of dump load that will work automatically instead of a manual switch? In case no one is home during the time when the batteries are fully charged but the wind turbine is still generating power in high winds?

the stator is still going to produce heat, you can't move the heat away from the coils like that , all your doing with the resistors is reducing the amount of amps it will produce.

Yes as long as it does not compete with your solar controllers. If it brakes under the top charge rate of the solar, then no. Example: Solar controller top charge is 14.25 volts, wind turbine brake engages at 14.0 volts. Then its not workable at any wind zone. But if those numbers are reversed, then your ok.

Hi I am having a problem with a new turbine. Had a second one to replace the first but still getting no power from it. I am using 10-3 wire on a 70 run. Taking it right to a bridge rectifier them battery. Still no power...o I have a watt amp volt meter between rectifier and battery. I have had two now and no power from either one! Please help. I did a continuity test on all but the last ten feet.

If its the same exact GE-500 M model like I have installed you should have no issues but if its not I can not be sure what the issue is unless theres a grounding problem, wires not well separated or connected. I put a list of exact items and many people go and buy the $1 cheaper rectifier by Fly-By-Night incorporated or CCA Wire from a Audio Wire supply, or a similar looking $10 cheaper turbine from a knock off seller like Tiny PMA Swapper Incorporated and end up with a mess and I can get to a fix by pointing that out, but if none of yours is that issue it's something very odd, almost UFO level to have gone through 2 and have same results.

Hi John I'm from Australia, run a small volunteer solar project on small islands in South Pacfic. Would like to use your micro wind turbine controller, too bad parts are only in USA and they want $40 fright. Have 2 Air marine Breeze that's been donated. Overhauled them w new bearings, like to remove the internal regulator and set up a bridge regulator inside and a volt regulator inside the house. THOSE REGULATOR YOU DON'T USE , BUT WILL BE ABLE T SHUT DOWN THE VIND TURBINE, ON THE DC side of the regulator. Are the on ebay, and I can buy them without buying a new wind turbine?

I'm looking specifically for the green braking resistors for a 500watt horizontal wind turbine and for a 4kw vertical wind turbine... Also, I'm still trying to get you to answer me on what do you have set up for when you guesstimate what the wind speed is??? I don't see anything set up on your equipment to show you what any wind speed is or was. So, you're just guesstimating right?

Yes but do not trust bulbs if they fail then you lose your dump loadability and can damage your battery

You can add the ALL IN ONE controllers to it amzn.to/3T9nbsj they do good as long as you do not add the full amount of solar they claim they can do as well as wind. You get the PIKASOLA 1400W so it can handle storms and only add up to half the solar if you choose to add solar so it runs cooler.

Why must be braking voltage of the wind turbine charge controller be e.g. 0.25V above the solar charge controller max voltage? I’ve been racking my head against this for so long but can't quite figure it out.

NUMBERS USED AS A EXAMPLE - If your Solar controller max charge is 14.40, and your wind controller brakes at lower than that then the volts coming in on solar will activate the turbines brakes all the time burning out both of them. But if your turbine is allowed to send in power just a little higher than the solar controller then the solar controller will be in stand by when the turbine brakes or diverts.

I used to use Android, but now use iOS for its Voice Control feature. Apple really seem to have put a lots of effort into this entire Accesibility stack.

Hey brother, You need to consider the cross sectional area of the conductors, not the diameter. If I did my math right your three 16 AWG wires have ~.009 square inches, where the 6 1/2 AWG has almost .0267 square inches. I haven't done a load analysis to see if the extension cords will be big enough or not. Just thought I'd through that out there. Keep up the good work.

It's closer to 8awg than 6 but goal is to not use the suggested 10 awg the turbine sellers say to use. I've done that and seen the wires get hot. Material mass @3×16 is that of just better than 8 yes. Note I refer all jumpers and drops as 8 awg for target and preferred which this does well.

3 - 16awg wires = 11awg. Not even close to 8awg. Heck 3 - 14awg = is only 9awg. Not much of a savings hack at all.
