Thought it might be worth clarifying! This isn't a spec list ranking, it's an opinion based tier list of my own personal experiences with each camera and what it means to me. Which is why the G7 ranks higher than the G80/G85, for example

These micro four thirds used cameras cost the same as a used full frame camera. I was thinking these would be smaller, lighter and importantly CHEAPER. I wanted to learn photography. So I got a used Sony A7s2. Then lens I got with it was damaged. I thought buying a zoom lens would help me practice diversely with different focal lengths. Bought the Tamron 24-70 f2.8. The thing is I don't keep my camera with me. I should have got a fixed focal length lens (which would have also been smaller) and a smaller camera so that I can keep this handy with me always. I need to practice more and more. The setup I have currently I just don't carry with me. Keeping in mind I want to click pictures in low light during evening and night after office, please share some suggestions for a body and lens to have with me everyday.

What about the Panasonic GX9? In my humble opinion a photo centric camera - one of the best for street photography and low light work. Small, light, well constructed, 20 meg AA sensor, stabilised and a flip screen for shooting from the hip. It's the G9's little brother. I couldn't live without it! Okay, it's not weather sealed, and you might need to buy a bigger grip, and it only takes one SD card, but hey, for discrete street work and travel, what more do you need?😊

The E-M10-II is legendary. They stuck all the features in it that they could think of when the marketing division was not paying attention. It even has 4 (!) custom modes on the dial. The OM-5 only has one. One! And it's small and metal built. They downgraded the line after that, clearly indicating this little camera was too good.

Somehow I think the E-M5 and E-M10 have exchanged places in this ranking. The whole E-M10 series is definitely more suitable for hiking and outdoors, and when not, the E-M1 series (all iterations, including the X...) are more interesting and capable than the E-M5.

I love your idea for this video, Emily, and the way you've put it together. Very nice samples too. It would have been rather dry without them. I expected to differ more from your findings, but you are obviously a (subjective but experienced) expert. Really well done! I agree for 80%. Most of what I don't agree I would just move for one tier. You asked for "a chat", so there you have my remarks on the whole system parade. The biggest omissions in the list is the *E-M1 Mark I/II/III range.* I only have the original one, but it's interesting enough, accurate skin color and slow but precise phase detect autofocus. From what I understand, the Mark II was revolutionary in many ways and was only beaten by the G9. The Mark III came 2,5 years after the G9 and had a tiny bit better sensor. Is still the one I crave for, it obviously has superb ergonomics with improved sensor, improved PDAF and many other nice things, lighter than the G9 (hiking!) and a better battery life. Somehow I think the *E-M5 and the E-M10* have exchanged places in this ranking. The E-M10 is definitely more suitable for hiking, and, when not outdoors, the E-M1 (all iterations including X...) are more interesting than the E-M5. I think the E-M5 has a retro appeal, but is neither as portable as the E-M10 nor as capable as the E-M1. That said, there are certainly guys who love just that half-way philosophy. One important omission is also the *splendid GH2.* It's the camera of a pioneering, historic importance. It has made serious video quality available to people like you and me (quality video camera's were much more expensive in 2011 and this was probably the first real hybrid). It had a decent image quality for photo marred by the lukewarm jpeg algorythm. But surprisingly, years after, when nobody used it anymore (somewhere in 2018 or even 2019? I forgot) Panasonic came up with a firmware update that took care of this problem. It was small, light, with unnerving tiny knobs but superb overall ergonomics. When my first GH2 got stolen, I went on using the GM1, terribly disappointed by its ergonomics but the results were fantastic. The color science of the GM1 was all that the GH2 was not, and even better than of the G85. The GM1 is not weather-sealed but has probably the most fastidious build quality I've seen in the MFT. Long after, using the GX9/G9 already, I was offered a black version for under €100, and I oh so much regret I hadn't done it, if just for the collection... a little gem, really, although the E-M10 objectively has IBIS, a viewfinder, a better image quality, and better ergonomics. In other words, much more of a camera while weighing just a few grams more. Historically, the *GH4* had been very popular from 2014 on until the GH5 came out. The GH4 so much revolutionized some video features over the GH3 that we thought it won't be replaced soon. The GH4 and G7 were the last great Panasonics without the IBIS. In 2017 time was ripe for the GH5 to set the new standard. And I think as a video oriented hybrid it was the best ever design of Panasonic MFT, flawed only by the lack of PDAF. For this flaw alone I think many who could afford it, migrated to Sony. I knew right away your *punishment of the E-M1X* would raise some voices. My blind assessment of it was the same like yours until I had bought the battery grip for my G9. Ever since, I have never taken it off. Also on the E-M1 original: the grip is very useful and such a peace of mind when you cover the events. I still don't know if there's anything that justifies a non-removable grip design of the X, and they could have included more batteries in detachable Oly/Pana designs, but the grip experience in itself has made me look different at the E-M1X. Plus: there is a whole "school" of photographers that swear by the E-M1X. I would indeed love to try it out. Finally, I don't have it, but from many a user I realize that the *GH6 is a phenomenal* video AND photo camera. It may have a better sensor and some more advanced features than the G9 Mk2 and the O-M1! And the *GX9* may be neglected in your list. It's ergonomics are not great, it's heavy for it's size, but it probably has the same superb sensor as the G9 and the color science is no less either. Time to stop now or I can better make my own video! :)) P. S. Of course, you'll come up with the lenses ranked in this same fashion like cameras here?

Great video! I am not familiar with all of the cameras in your rankings, but I have a couple of them - the E-M5 II and the OM-5. The E-M5II was my first M43 camera, moving from full-frame Canon 5DM3. The E-M5 II is what sold me on the system, and I then got first one and then a second E-M1II. I still use the E-M1 Mark IIs for all my professional work, and I am sure that camera would rank well on your list if you were familiar with it. The E-M5 II got boxed up and put away for years as I used my E-M1IIs exclusively for everything. My main reason for this is they handle and operate differently enough that I felt it was better to stick with the Pro bodies for everything. Recently, my sister bought me the OM-5, and it is a really nice little camera, reminding me of how much I liked the E-M5 II. So, I dusted off my E-M5 II and I have been rediscovering just how great this little guy is! The OM-5 is updated, better sensor, more features, and extremely light, but I love the feel of the E-M5 II. Again - great job on the video. Love your channel!

But...just my humble opinion. Thanks for an interesting video. OH...and with the PL series (I started with a PL2, then PL5), Olympus really blew it when they got to the point of having a PL camera that was not compatible with a electronic viewfinder. People are learning there's much more to it than what was disclosed when it 1st came out. What people thought were insignificant improvements have turned out to be major improvements. And OM Systems has announced there will firmware updates for the OM1 but those updates will not turn it into the OM1.ii. The OM1 does not have the computer power to handle the new features of the OM1.ii.

The EM1X is simply too big to go with the m43rds ethos. I think she called it appropriately. It also was in a price bracket that put it dangerously on par with some APSC/FF options. This is beyond specs, and more of a pragmatic bottom line. The camera also flopped in the market. This shouldn’t read that for whole who love it it dones’t fullfill them but keep in mind the AF of the EM1.3 is as good or better, and the OM-1’s is better yet the cameras are much smaller (and compared to the EM1X MSRP, affordable).
@777hdn
@777hdn 4 ай бұрын
@@Raist3db I think you really put it to the point by calling it "m43rds ethos". As long as you see the justification for using a smaller sensor in building the smallest cameras, the E-M1X is just a misfit. And many people believing in this made it flop in the market. Coming a bit late in 2019 being largely based on 2016 technology didn't help either. But M43 is nothing but a different compromise from the FF compromise, just remember that 24x36 is orignally called "Kleinbild" meaning "small frame". If this would not be true every pro would have to go with Hasselblad or even using bellow cameras with even much bigger sensors. Compared to its FF DLSR competitors in 2019, the D6 and EOS 1DX Mk 3, the E-M1X comes roughly in par or better except in high ISO picture quality, a substantial but also linmited advantage. A price of 3.000 € then was less than 50 % of them at that time. But the biggest difference comes with the lenses: A comparable set of my E-M1X camera with lenses (14 to 600 mm equiv.) MSRP total compares 3.400 € to 11.500 € for the same set of Nikon or Canon pro camera with their lenses. Of course the OM-1 is definitely a next-gen camera compared to the E-M1X but it also definitely lacks the pro attitude and in my opinion it unfortunately also fails to surpass or at leas fully catch up with Z9 and EOS R3. So, as I'm really convinced of M43 simply being the better compromise I have to hope that tide will be turning for OM System and maybe they'll even be able to launch a full pro camera again some day.

@@777hdn I can't agree that the EM1X was matching "on par or better" in general. And yes, all systems have their pros and cons, certainly. The pro of m43rds since Olympus and Panasonic both did the joint announcement was the smaller body/less weight. To the extent m43rs strays from that, it makes it tougher to compete, and I do think that's how 4/3rds died.

Oh dear...the EM-1x is NOT too big when you put it next to any of the cameras with the battery pack attached, and it is a monster workhorse camera at an outstanding price. I also have to disagree with the OM-1: the new menus make life vastly simpler and the image quality is outstanding. For both of these cameras, the IBIS is so frackin' strong that the only reason really to take a tripod with you is really long time exposures with ND on top of the computational ND and for time lapse. Oy oy oy...

I am sort of past seeing a lot of videos at this point but I have to admit I found this video more entertaining and well done than I had expected. Credit were due! 🙂 Surprised you didn’t mention the GM5. I put the GM5 > GM1 simply because it has a functional view finder and some minor usability tweaks that make it even better, plus I always found the rear multi-menu wheel of the GM1 horrible as it becomes stiff easily, dirt, etc. On OM10.4 vs OM-5 -> the Tilt LCD helps a lot and the EM5.3/OM-5/EM1.2/EM1.3 sensor can’t auto iso to ISO 25600, only 6400. For some street night life work, yes, I want it to roll higher. I concluded the reason is that while the sensor refresh of the later cameras is faster, when you go over ISO 6400 the sensor refresh speed slows down to similar to the PenF/OM10.4/EP7’s, and probably that “state change” is not easy to make particularly rolling back and forth in a changing exposure from ISO 6400/to >6400. I still wish they figured that out somehow.

Great video, but I'm biased because I've owned a couple of your god tier picks! There is one camera that could have made the list, and that's the GM5. I know it's almost identical to the GM1 but it has a built-in EVF. For me, when it comes to photography, an EVF is a deal-breaker, which is why I'm so frustrated the Oly EPs don't have them. I don't know if it's still true today, but when it came out, the GM5 was the smallest interchangable camera with an EVF. It takes excellent pictures and is a masterpiece of engineering from Panasonic IMO. Truly jeans-pocketable. Why don't they make cameras like this any more?!

Hi and great vid. I totally agree with you, but due to my own needs, there is one camera I feel I would put in a different category. I have (working as a professional) 2x old G9's (agree), 2x EM1 Mk2 (great work horse cams, both over 1 mil shots), a new G9II (agree), 2x EM10 Mk2's (I call my shutter savers as I picked them up cheap and they are handy, but I agree), a Pen F (agree), 3 EM5 Mk1 (agree and having them since release they will be missed when they die......soon), but my 2x EM1x's I feel are, for big lens balance, the dual batts and the cleaner handling (than adding a grip to another EM1 style camera) for fast sports etc, are the ducks guts. I would put them in the third tier (for me), good in some circumstances. I know they are big, but I have large hands, put big glass on the front of them (300 f4) and when shooting sport would always add a grip for the two batts, so they are the best way to do that. I also think that at $2k Australian, they are a steal. I do have an S5 and S5II to flesh out my video, but the G9II is the top dog and most fun to use. I just went S5 for better high ISO work and then scored some very cheap L mount 7Art Spectrum and IRIX cine lenses, then some Lumix primes, then the S5II on sale....... .. Sordid little story, I feel a little dirty retelling it. Cheers again and thanks for making me think!

I am glad you like yours but I did try it and I still found it too big for m43rds. The EM1X flopped in the market (note: that doesn’t mean it’s not a good camera for those who like it and fulfills their needs), and I don’t see OM Systems making a mark II of it. I do agree the ergonomics are great. I think using a low res outdated EVF at the original MSRP was insane. If you regularly shoot in bad weather with gloves, the usability is really good.

I owned an Olympus Air 01 in 2017 when the software worked. I wonder if it will work with the new OM System app that works with my E-M5 Mk II. Anyway, the Air worked great and produced images as good as the E-M5, since they have the same sensor. I used it with the Panasonic 30mm f/2.8 IS macro lens, and could put it on the end of a monopod, stick the monopod several feet off the path into the blooming flowers and get some good macro shots thanks to the lens IS and it was a fairly bright day, too. All without treading off the path. So there were some creative applications of the Air and it was also fun to walk around with just a Pana 14mm f/2.5 on it and shoot discreetly from the waist. On my channel I recently posted a video I made with the Air and the Pana 14mm on a high tripod, of my reaction to the 2017 total eclipse. It's the latest video I posted, in fact. Take a look if you want a video sample.

❤ I love my Olympus OMD EM-5 original camera and I use it every day, with the 17mm and the 25mm prime and the only zoom I have is the fantastic plastic 40-150mm zoom and it's satisfying for my street portrait needs r.n. I really like only using the prime lenses and my 17mm is the f:2.8 and the 25mm is f:1.7 and all my lenses have perfectly function fast A/F. I love the Jpegs straight out of the camera as long as my exposure is perfect. Amazing, solid build like a tank and those Zuiko glasses are just amazing quality. I'm an enthusiasm amateur photographer and learned photography back in the late 70's with 35mm and 120mm manual film cameras and my first camera my dad give me was a Agfa 120mm and he had the Kodak Retina 3s 35mm camera and he had his own dark room and he was experimenting and learning to enlarge and print photographs. Now I converted from manual cameras and film photography totally into digital photography and I'm aceing it! I would highly recommend the Oly OMD EM-5 series cameras to anyone who likes casual photography because beside the great quality of the cameras also it's retro 1973 OM-1 design very pleasing to the eye! Thanks and I'm big fan of your videos, thank you!🌹❤️👍💯

My only m43 camera today (after using many in the past) is the EP7, which I love notwithstanding some clear limitations. It is not my main camera, and I'm not expecting it to be my main camera. It is my travel carry everywhere camera. Doesn't come with an EVF, which is OK given the bright screen and its size (main reason for having it), doesn't have good AF-C, but AF-S is outstanding in most situations and in low light (better than Fuji, Sony, and the pre Zf cameras), has custom color profiles (4 mono and 4 color) that I can recall with the click of a button and that allows me to create my own styles, dual dials, and a photographer tilt screen that also allows for selfies. And it has a built in flash, which I totally use with my family. It looks good, it is pocketable with the Panasonic 14mm, IBIS is wonderful, auto ISO works great to values that are even higher than the OM5... Not much to complain, other than the slow start up after turning it off, and the lack of exposure compensation in manual mode with auto ISO (but the work around is not too bad, given there is an exposure lock button).

Love the list! Some cameras I've had the pleasure of having and/or using, some not :) But quite an extensive and informative list! Kudos! One single thing though - the E-M1X is anything BUT a Crime against photography - as a happy, satisfied owner of two such cameras and making a living off of those cameras - I can't say enough about that model - sturdy, built like a tank, with great ergonomics and amazing reliability! It fits my hand like a glove and clients are super impressed by the overall look of the camera, even though I absolutely KNOW that this is a stupid thing to judge a camera by, Still, clients subconsciously want to feel like they're in the hands of a professional - and a big-ish camera means that for some people LOL Also, my 40-150mm is so well balanced with a bigger camera body 🫣

You gotta give the OM1-X some more cred. Micro four thirds is unique in that it has this lineup of just tele(zoom) lenses that are absurdly small given it's size, but still big (for m43) lenses and it's the perfect camera for handling those lenses, and I think it demonstrates the sheer versatility of the m43 system. Personally I like small cameras though and if I was in the m43 system I'd love to have an PEN-F and a GM1. And yeah, I'm not a m43 users, but I watch your channel, because it's bubbling over with joy for cameras and photography. The king of micro four thirds for vdeo (in my opinion) is the GH5s. This little 10 megapixel sensor is a pure beast in low light and when I do weddings or Quinceañera events, this is the only camera body I truly trust outside of my full frame Canon R6 (I use as B roll). The only downside to this camera for my video use is that it sometimes skews reds and it's a little work in post to correct. Outside of that quark, I have not met a camera for its price range that can compete with it for all the advanced video specs that it has and the spectacular low light performance. I never hesitate to go up as high as 10K iso on the GH5s. It's that good! For photos, I don't even bother really. This camera is fine in good lighting but the low light performance that I find in the video mode doesn't cross over to the photo side. That's all good because I love my Canon R6 for my photos and only use it as my primary body for photos.

Indeed , the red camera is my casual camera partly because it seems so playful and works perfectly well with 17mm f1.8 lens. The "go to" camera has been an E-M5.Mk3 last four years. I think the color out of the box on the gh6 is the best of any, repeat, any Lumix camera. Just something about the sensor is special. It's a camera for cinematic video. the g9II is great but it appears more digital. I'm guessing they are going to release a gh7 this year with PDAF, and if its just like the 6, I would get it asap. By the way, you also dissed the em10. I beat the crap out of mine (again first edition circa 2012 or so), and it keeps giving me great photos when it behaves. the em5 with the Panny Leica 25 1.4 (one of yours and mine fav lenses) is an amazing combo. but I digress. I am frankly in deep disagreement with you over the gh6. that 25 mp sensor gives me, surprisingly, great photos....the 100 mp feature is breathtaking.....the choice of codecs and frame rates stellar, the AF works if you know how to do it, and I love my gh6, as much, maybe more now than the gh5 which still is a workhorse, dependable, but the 6 is just overall a better camera. I also paid HALF for my 6 than the g9II, yes got a deal, brand new, HALF. so dollar for dollar or pound for pound I am one happy camper. I don't know why the 6 doesn't get any love. yes, it's a camera put together by a "committee". but I think the 6 should be in your A category next to the 5. It's not good for certain things. It's an all around performer. have a nice day

Nice video! I use the G9II for work and the GM1 is always with me when not working. Im always amazed of what the GM1 can produce, the pictures are incredible.

Your take on the OM1 2 was spot on. There was great irony when they released their statement about no upgrades to the original's firmware on a page that, up above, said they would basically continue to improve their cameras to make your investment a wise one. They never did that with the OM1. Minimally, they shoulld have improved the AI detection and added person detection.

The field sensor of the EM1X along with 300 and 90mm lenses make it exceptional for research and documenting relative to the 1DX series in terms of size and reach; the whole of the system relative to equivalents is the important experience. The GH5s and RSC2 would be other top ranked package allowing for smooth focus pulls and low light video as well as 14bit low light RAW image files and use of the Metabones XL. Started with the GF1 when released, moved through many of the bodies, can't see needing anything other than EM1X with GH5s now.

Just found you thanks to Robin Wong. Looking forward to watching all your videos! I’ve had my EM5 mk2 for years, and just got the OM-1. Always more to learn!

I feel the same way about the OM1 mkii. Should have been a firmware update. OMD should have put enough ram in the Mk.I to support the firmware updates. Very disappointed in OMD.

I would say the em10 Mk iii is awesome, it looks sweet as well in silver, maybe it's because it was the second digital Olympus camera I had after my Olympus c750 UZ in 2006, yeh a big gap there filled with every digital camera company you could name and probably some you couldn't. The EM1-Mk III I would put in they could have emailed me category as the OM-1 was coming out soon after, got burnt with that

Thanks to you I went out and purchased an EM5 *the original one* and I fell in love with the camera. Thankfully I purchased it through MPB because the sensor had multiple stuck pixels on it and they out right just replaced the camera for free. I absolutely love MPB and I can’t wait to get my hands back on another EM5 :)

Did you try the Pixel Mapping option in the menu? That should get rid of them.

As an E-M1X user, I feel attacked 😂My only defence is that the button layout is much nicer than the E-M1 III and I like chonk from my cameras (also being a user of digital MF cameras) I like have a solid whole palm against the body so I get weirded out when I have to use smaller cameras.

Out of curiosity, I’m wondering why you had the G7 ranked higher than the G80? They’re very similar in size and specs, but the G80 has IBIS, is weather sealed, doesn’t have an anti-aliasing filter, and there’s no recording limit (or at least not on the G85). I love them both, but the ranking had me scratching my head. Thanks!

About OM-1 mark II --> yes, they could release that I understand OM wants to earn some bucks now, but.. they should just add the 250$ cost more on that comparing to OM-1 mark I... but adding 1k$ for GND and "better autofocus" (which is just a firmware update) is a crime! (LOL!) for that price I CHOOSE FULLFRAME all day. I still won't change my mind about pricing M43, I would choose M43 any day if the cost of OM-1 mark I would be 15% less than today, but never would choose M43 system at the prices of OM1 mark II, that is just ridiculous. Too much of detail and colours science lose comparing to full frame. Just my opinion. Not saying it's bad gear. A7-IV was around 300$ less than OM-1 mark II a few months ago. And the 3rd party lenses choice are incredible wide. It's just an idiotic choice if you take OM-1 mark II as a future investment over A7-IV in this price comparing situation AS A BEGGINER looking to be professional. Smaller sensors doesn't forgive the misstakes while taking the photo that easy, as bigger formats.
