First video in a series about the Arturia MicroFreak. This is the longest video I've ever made - mostly because the MicroFreak has a LOT of synthesis modes. Make sure to check out the timeline if you'd rather just investigate something specific about this versatile synthesizer. Thanks for watching!
SPECIAL NOTE: I really apologize that the phasing/intensity of the synth panel lights is super annoying with my camera/settings. I tried just blocking the lights in editing, but that was annoying to watch too. It's probably less of a thing on smaller screens, but still. I will fix it in the next one (by muting the lights irl). Also, there were a couple of brief video rendering glitches in one of the sub-renders (static screen for like 8 seconds) - I 'fixed' that but then the video was completely broken. Investigating the cause and how to fix in the future. - Nim
TIMELINE
00:00 STARTER. I did the fancy rotating shot by putting the synth on my oscillating fan and placing it at different angles... so pleased that it worked that I forgot to dust the synth ;-;
00:23 INTRO. some general stuff about Arturia and the MicroFreak.
04:05 ESSENTIAL CONTROLS & FEATURES, KEYBOARD, ETC. (oof those panel lights. will fix for next video.)
14:45 the microfreakbirthdaychallenge - this is pretty bad. what's worse is how many tries it took to get it!
15:20 The Digital Oscillator, modulation matrix stuff, saving a preset
SYNTHESIS MODES
19:25 Mode 1 - Basic Waves
22:45 Mode 2 - Super Wave
24:55 Mode 3 - Wavetable
27:10 Mode 4 - Harmonic Oscillator
28:30 Mode 5 - Karplus Strong (whoops, I edited out a part where I turned the Amp Mod back on...)
32:10 MUSICAL INTERLUDE. I really like to play a synthesized Persian Santoor a lot (plug-in from the GarageBand World Music Pack, also on my daughter's Casio). This is something kind of close, done using synthesis Mode 12 (Modal Resonator). The preset uses pressure to get that timbre/pitch change.
33:25 Mode 6 - Virtual Analog
36:20 Mode 7 - WaveShaping Oscillator
38:24 Mode 8 - Two Operator FM
40:10 Mode 9 - Granular Formant Oscillator
42:45 Mode 10 - Chords
45:20 Mode 11 - Vowel and Speech Synthesis
46:55 Mode 12 - Modal Resonator (I mistakenly said I used this in the Intro; used it in the Interlude)
49:50 OUTRO. So, I say that the next video will be in a week and the following one in 2 weeks. That schedule might sag a little bit. There is a potential that hurricane Dorian will cause issues this week, and then I've got a short trip planned for the following week. I also have an idea for an in-between video that I might do. BUT, rest assured, I will come back to the MicroFreak asap.
51:30 ENDER. This was all done in Granular Formant mode - BECAUSE SAND, RIGHT! I also sort of broke tradition for this type of video - I ran the MicroFreak through a delay (pretty basic and nice delay, Donner Yellow Fall Delay pedal). One wonders if this synth should have a delay - but a lot of people have a delay - possibly a delay that they really like - so it's not such a critical issue. Regardless, I thought it ended up sounding nice with the Yellow Fall. I recently got the sand sculpture in this part on Amazon. I think the U.S. seller is Pitkin Stearns, but the actual maker is Klaus Bosch, a.k.a. the Sandman. I had a really nice toy like this as a kid, used it a ton, and finally decided to try to find a nice one. This one is pretty amazing. I will put a link below.

@@undulations no problem, I really appreciate your content. I know this is a bit of an open-ended question but I'd really appreciate your insight. Do you recommend the MicroFreak for someone buying their first synthesiser? If not would you recommend anything else? I know the MicroBrute gets recommended a lot but I really would like something not monophonic ideally, but also not too daunting to learn how to use. (I appreciate there is a learning curve with everything though).
@undulations
@undulations 3 жыл бұрын
@@lukegregg5944 Well, I'm certainly a big advocate of MicroBrute as a first synth but totally understand what you're saying about the limitation of being monophonic. It has sort of a "classic" design/functionality in terms of the keyboard and patching. But, that said, I feel like the MicroFreak really would make a nice first synth, mainly just making sure what you are getting into with the MF's keyboard. It has a ton of built-in presets that are easy to explore. A lot of "performance" features like key pressure, a bend strip, all sorts of arpeggio and sequencer options, and so much depth in terms of sound design. It's also very easy to add to down the road: a reverb pedal and some sort of drum or bass synth to go along with it - even a Pocket Operator - and a lot of musical territory is wide open. I have trouble thinking of a better option at the price. Volcas are cheaper and some pair of them might be an alternative. A lot of it comes down to what you have in mind. Hope this helps - I know it can be tough to decide👍🏻!

Great insightful video! I do not own a Microfreak but wonder if it can do the following. Send pressure to control the sustain, and with a moderate decay (which will act as the lag time), allows you to lag the wavetable position via the sustain level. So, in paraphonic mode, and an open filter, when you press a note the wavetable position lags from initial position to whatever was lagged with the pressure value controlling the sustain. Totally possible on a Blofeld, but the Blofeld only has channel presure, and not polyphonic pressure like the Microfreak.
@undulations
@undulations 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Pigott I feel like what you are describing is quite possible. You could route Pressure to the main envelope Sustain knob (so that could be user-defined destination 1), and then route that envelope (thus the sustain value, once the decay is over) to the Timbre knob (which is position within the table in Wavetable synthesis mode). I’m curious about the sound. I’ll give it a try and report back👍🏻.
@undulations
@undulations 4 жыл бұрын
I set up something that I think is pretty much like you have described. I feel like there are a variety of ways to set the parameters. Sounds nice. For some of these tables it kind of has an Aphex Twin sound about it.

@undulations
@undulations 4 жыл бұрын
richard irons Thank you! In the video I’m just running a standard 3.5mm stereo aux cable from the synth headphone output (it is a dual mono signal, not actual stereo) into my recorder. You can use a similar headphone/ aux cable method with a lot of monitors. The synth has a balanced line out (stereo 1/4”) that works with some monitors and audio interfaces. I’m not familiar with the inputs for your interface, but it’s possible that you would need a 3.5mm stereo to dual 1/4” mono Y-cable. I hope this helps!

How easy is it to re-order the factory presets? They seem to be a bit of a jumble: personally I'd sooner group them by category so you have all your leads together, all your pads in another group, sequences in another, and so on. As it is it's like browsing through a badly sorted record collection trying to find a particular record.
@undulations
@undulations 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Will take a look at it and get back to you👍🏻
@undulations
@undulations 3 жыл бұрын
Okay, great question, and I learned some things coming up with an answer. First thing I should say is that trying to organize things directly on the MF is possible but not very practical for major moves like this. I.e. you load and save presets of one type into a blank region of the presets. This is good for setting up a performance, I'd say. Second thing, the Arturia MIDI Control Center (AMCC) software allows imports and exports of Projects but the files are not human readable (was hoping you might could re-org stuff in a text editor). Note: a Project is a collection of presets that can be sent to/from the MF (along with global data, I think.). So, this all means that the AMCC interface is the best way to do what you are suggesting. Now, one way to do it would be drag-and-drop sorting within a project's lists of presets - easier, but still a lot of work. So, to me, it seems like the best way is to go into the Search tab, click a preset 'type' button (i.e. Lead or such) and then - because of the 2-panel setup (search on pc on left, MF memory on right) - drag the search results onto the MF slots. So, for example, I have 6 different Strings presets on my PC that show up in the search panel, and I can just drag them one at a time to preset slots 1-6 on my MF. It's kind of brute force, but it doesn't really take that long if you are doing it one main time. Then, I should stress, it would be a good idea to load your work BACK onto the computer so that your sorting is preserved in a separate project. Hope this helps👍🏻
@Skiamakhos
@Skiamakhos 3 жыл бұрын
@@undulations that's awesome. I suspect there may be a feature request in that for Arturia - some kind of sort function within the midi controller software? As a developer myself I know that's fairly trivial to achieve, so I'll drop them a line & see what they say. Thanks again!

I tried the press/pitch on the matrix as shown but it had no effect, what am I doing wrong?
@undulations
@undulations 4 жыл бұрын
Joe Blow Well, I guess start with the Init patch (to make sure the Pressure is reading aftertouch, not velocity). Then scroll and set the mod matrix value. Make sure that the light stays lit when you scroll away from that press/pitch point. Scroll back to it and confirm a non-zero number. Then press with the pad of your finger, kinda hard. Last thing, use the power supply that came with it, not usb. Let me know what happens👍🏻!

At 5 mins you try to describe a problem with the audio but I am very confused as to what you are referring too? You say you " could use your headphones but" can you please elaborate the problem you are referring to and what part of the machine exactly like are you talking about the headphone jack, or something else. I rewatched it a few times and I cant tell. I just bought my unit and I'm worried I cant use my setup I currently just have headphones and I have a set of computer speakers with an 8th inch jack would that work ?
@undulations
@undulations 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes that's fine. Using the headphone jack is the surefire way to go, for headphones, pc speakers, field recorder, etc. The issue comes from using the 1/4" line out jack on the back which is a "balanced" output. It just means that the two signals (one on the tip conductor of the jack, the other on the ring conductor of the jack ) are out of phase (i.e. one is the negative of the other). Those signals can cancel out in a lot of circumstances and lead to really weak output. I've seen a review on YT where that happened - almost no volume in the uploaded audio. Weird stuff like it sounds okay on speakers but disappears on a phone speaker. Anyway, the line out is for hooking to an audio interface or a set of speakers with a balanced input. I hope this helps👍🏻
