Correct me if I'm wrong ..if the cylinder drifts out under static load the oil leaks from the rod end past the piston and into the closed end . Therefore the leak test should have been done on the rod end port .

It is good to know the fruits of my work are helping people work safely and efficiently with hydraulics. Thank you for your taking the time to send me the following comments: "Rory, thanks for the youtube video on leakage path testing. I can not wait to read the book and dump the shotgun troubleshooting path. Please upload the second half into KZfaq ASAP!!:)" We are working on a number of follow-up videos. They will be posted soon.

Did you make a video on testing the relief valve and anti cavitation valve?

Your Guage was moving while you were talking. Think the cylinder needs another look. Good video Thank You.

Great video. How about some new videos? are they coming soon!!

Not sure how this works when there are load holding valves mounted to the cylinder. Spool directional valves will always leak and it's the poppets in the load holding valves that hold the cylinder and you can't check with this technique.

Well if that machine was working to working temp, only thing to do is feel if the cylinder have a hot place leakage create heat. The other way is to pull the boom back fully l put a flow metre in Port b line

as a small hydraulic technician ,I'm seeing him how he holds that small hydraulic hand pump.first open the release valve then purge and release air out of the line then close the valve then hold the pump straight or tank side up! so it can work!!!

If the rod end port is not capped wouldn't the rod extend and not hold 2000 psi ?

Coming soon: Video of how this exact backhoe hydraulic circuit can be constructed on the MFD102 simulator, and also how this exact troubleshooting procedure can be replicated on the amazing Model MF102 training simulator. In addition the on-board computer can generate, in real time, the exact fault (s) the hydraulic system on a typical backhoe can experienceThere is no training system on the planet that can make the transition from the school lab to the field as seamless. In fact the MF102 will teach students how to isolate a problem in a directional control valve when a Microleak test procedure yields leakage into the valve port. MicroLeak will determine if the leakage is in the cylinder port relief valve or the spool/bore area. Never remove another directional control valve when the problem is simply a leaking line relief valve.
