Switch your grip to literally finger tips only. 8 year Blackhawk pilot speaking from experience. You still have more of your fingers than you need on it. Think more along the lines of holding it like a pencil. It also helps to rest the palm of your hand on something stable (like your thigh in real life) so your hand is perfectly still and it's just your fingers moving.

The cyclic should be between your knees. Ergonomically, this will give you better control of the cyclic. Your arms, hand, and fingers are more tense when you have them off to the side. This is why helicopters have the cyclic between the pilots legs. I don't know why flight simmers set up their controls like this.

Thing is: Cyclic in the Black hawk is about 150 cm long. The common joystick is around 15 cm long. 1 cm deflection on 150 cm cyclic is much smaller input than 1 cm deflection on 15 cm stick. You can't be as good as with real stick unless you have lenght extension.

Most helicopter pilots would say with the cyclic that you think where you want to be and the helicopter will move, tiny inputs are the way to go, great vid mate.

Yep, I’ve seen other real Bell 47 pilots complain about the stability of it on their forum when at 100%. 30-50% on the realism slider is far more realistic according to them because real helicopters are unstable but are not THAT unstable. Both this and the AirLandFS engine have this issue but people are stuck in the mindset that harder always means more realistic.

@@chrismain1170 Nope, they don't use Hall effect sensors. They're magnetoresitive contactless sensors not Hall effect sensors. And a well maintained, regularly cleaned potentiometer will give just as precise an output as any contactless sensor; both of these components output analog signals. The advantage of the contactless sensor is that it will not need the maintenance and will significantly outlast the potentiometer. Going back to precision, any theoretical difference is driven by when the analogue output of either component is converted to a digital signal and the resolution of that conversion. Not that the resolution matters on a non-extended stick. If you do the trig maths, even an 8 bit resolution (as found on the old CH Products kit) will be quite sufficient for the levels of precision capable by the human hand. On an extended stick, the move up to 12 bit will make a difference but beyond that, human motor skills will not be precise enough for the extra 2 or 3 bits of resolution to matter (both VKB and Virpil have a maximum 15 bit resolution; TM's claimed 16 bit is nothing of the sort, AFAIR it's actually 15 bit).

[sigh] You don't really know what you're talking about do you: The conversion of the analogue output of either a potentiometer or a contactless sensor (like the sensors VKB and Virpil use) to a digital signal and specifically the resolution of that conversion is what drives the precision. The best thing you can do for flying a helicopter on simulators is to buy a "simple" extension for the Warthog (or any other joystick). There's one available that allows you to put the base on the ground and it's angled, very realistic and works flawlessly. It really makes a huge difference.

I have the Thurstmaster HOTAS and its really terrible for helicopters, its way too stiff, you need to get a new spring for it to work and extension and then be able to mount it like you have done, then you're 300$ in to addons for it... as well... might as well go to something better. I use the Warthog throttle, that thing is fine, works well, not a huge fan of it either but it works just fine. The stick I have just stopped using and I went back to my X55 Rhino stick thats from 2014... it works great, its light and responds instantly to input, I like to have my controls linier and super sensitive and I have flow this Bell 47 a ton, hundreds of hours, best helicopter we have now of MSFS for pure helicopter dynamics. I expect that to even out in November but for now this cant be beaten. Most of the inputs when I fly is so tiny you can barely see the stick move. And the stick in the sim is probably set up to be 1 to 1 with your movement but since its longer it looks like its moving more than it is. New spring for the Warthog cost 50€ and then all the other bits would be 200 - 300€ as well... then we're up at 800€.. I paid 480€ for my Warthog... so its hardly cheap.. it would probably been much cheaper a few years ago, maybe around 350€...

For anybody else reading this, don't bother with the Rotor Plus. Virpil screwed up the throttle on the Rotor Plus base so really that extra you get on the Rotor Plus model isn't really worth it. Save your money and get the basic Virpil Rotor base (for more information see this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jK6Id7uTta2bn4E.html)
@MikeInExile
@MikeInExile Жыл бұрын
@@stevedavey1343 Well… I guess I’m not bold enough to make a blanket statement one way or another on whether someone should or should not buy the VPC Rotor TCS Plus Base (the one with the throttle). I WILL however, state **my** reasons for buying it, and why after more than a year of ownership, I’m very glad I made that choice! I'm also writing this in the hopes that it might help anyone else who is struggling with making a go/no-go decision regarding the throttle -- maybe they'll see something here that they might not have considered otherwise? 🙂 1) The throttle itself IS true to the IRL Huey. Although it is true that DCS doesn't have it modeled/mapped 100% correctly, that’s NOT an issue with VirPil, that’s an issue with DCS! Furthermore, that could change overnight if/when DCS decides to fix/patch it! 2) Honest to God, how hard can it be to simply hit “page up” on the keyboard to get the throttle to start working correctly with the DCS Huey anyway? Again, this is a DCS thing and not a Virpil thing, and it’s a super trivial hoop to jump through IMHO! 3) The throttle works just fine with other helicopters in DCS and even Flight Simulator. (I don't know about X-Plane and others.) 4) If you lose your engine governor due to battle damage in DCS, you might be thankful that you have the throttle available so you can (easily?) take over manually and return to base and complete the mission rather than crash/die. 5) I spent the extra $120 so I could at least have the throttle _available_ (even if I didn’t end-up using it that much) rather than NOT having it at all and _wishing_ that I did later on (and then totally kicking myself for not having enough foresight). Full disclosure: I'm somewhat of a gadget person, and the throttle looked like a fun 'play-pretty', so there's that too...! ;-) 6) The throttle is really nice to have for learning/practicing emergency procedures if that’s your cup-of-tea! 7) Out of the literally thousands of dollars I (and many others) have invested in computer parts, controllers, VR headsets, and addons, the extra $120 for the throttle just didn't seem like that big a deal! Right? I was _already_ in it for about $420 plus shipping anyway, so why not just go all-in for another 25% or so and add the throttle? ;-) I went ahead and bought the collective with the throttle at a time when I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into -- and 'wasting' $120 on the throttle was a risk that I took. In hindsight, I’m _really_ glad I made the decision to go ahead and get the throttle with the collective, and if the throttle were suddenly taken away, make no doubt about it, I would _really_ miss it! At the end of the day, you pays yer money and you makes yer choice. But for anyone reading this, that’s **my** take on it. As usual, YMMV and Happy Simming y'all! 🙂
