I have the series 1 iPad Pro 12.9 I’ve had it since about a week after it first came out and love it we’re going to upgrade soon but it still works a treat I use it everyday for about 3hrs

It's hilarious that we look at artificial use cases and that previously these were not viable options for serious work or day to day usage when in fact a lot of engineers in research labs have been using the surface Pro line-up since the SP3 was out. I still use my SP3 for engineering work today! So the comparison then and now should be on how it's much easier to do so. Microsoft likely markets the surfaces as tablets to save themselves from people who would want to call them laptops and then would complain that they weren't exactly the same. The reality, however, is that they have in many cases outperformed laptops and have been the device of choice for many people who use it as a laptop and not a tablet 🤷🏾♂️

Yep, and I pretty much had it with Apple’s control over my iPad. Once a powerful ARM Surface Pro 8 or 9 comes out, I’m getting off iPad/iPadOS BS monopoly App Store and Apple’s efforts to stop me from “sideloading” i.e. purchase and download from elsewhere outside their App Store.

@@AdmiralBison I think objectively speaking tho, if developers utilise the iPads real estate to make desktop apps available, it wouldn’t matter what operating system it’s using as long as it can replace those apps. I use google and Microsoft apps mostly for my work and uni, I use my Mac for that even tho my iPad Pro is capable of running them, it’s not comfortable to hover a mouse on a small screen (11inch). It’s good for note taking and content watching, even if it can replace your laptop entirely, it’s not a fun experience. For that money, and unless an iPad suits your needs, it could be well spent on a good windows laptop/ mac m1

@@AdmiralBison that’s why I think if you already own a mac, an iPad increases your productivity. If you don’t own a mac, don’t buy the iPad pros. Get the cheapest one (300) and a good laptop

Good comparison, however when you factor in the additional cost of the magic keyboard and Apple pencil, you could purchase an i7/16gb ram Surface Pro 8, which would have been a fairer comparison IMO. Plus I've got a dock so I can connect my SP8 to my large 4k monitor and use my full size keyboard and mouse, which is why I chose this over the iPad.

That makes more sense, the base model gets crushed in comparison. Not considering operating system differences, if you’re looking to buy a computer that can be a tablet. Go for surface. If you need a tablet only that helps with professional use. Buy the iPad

I use my iPad for everything (carrying it at uni for coding, notes, reading, writing papers, etc.), but it would be gg without my mac mini at home as a server for complex python libraries and sometimes better multi-tasking when at my desk. If I could only afford one single thing that would carry me through every task, I’d go for the Surface. But with a config like this, I sincerely don’t think there can be anything better: best apps, best integration, best battery life, best (please don’t kill me for this one) ecosystem… more expensive, yes… utterly superior for my workload, also yes (as a physicist, so your milage may vary drastically if you’re not into those note-making apps). Plus, for my Mac… I mean…. Unix based….I mean… do I need to say more for those Astronomy folks? :D

@@vlad2718 the iPads is more powerful than a mac at the tasks that it is intended to do, but trying to replace a computer with an iPad is just not a comfortable experience. Yes I use my iPad to mainly take notes in university. I replaced all my books with it

@@kathandesai as a matter of fact i really want to make a vid about it, but long story short… for python use some app (i use juno), but it can only have some native oython libraries (no astropy, etc.), so then make a mac a server and ssh into it… use juno connect or just through the browser… i’ll talk more about this

Davinci Resolve render times: iPad Pro: ∞ SP8: 2min Unity 3D compile times: iPad Pro: ∞ SP8: 5s Blender rendering times: iPad Pro: ∞ SP8: 5 min etc. You completely failed to mention the terrible software library for pro users iPad offers vs the full desktop suite SP8 offers and instead focused on meaningless things like camera quality and marginally better display (and faster processor, not even the i7 model for SP8, come on man!) None of that shit matters, what matters is what I can DO with the device. iPad can do NOTHING I want to do! Kinda deal-breaker, eh? Even for basic office use with the keyboard, iPad is both thicker AND heavier to lug around compared to SP8 (another thing you somehow forgot to mention; it's also heavier with the keyboard). iPad is a fantastic media consumption toy, sprinkled with terrible "pro" software like Premiere Rush (like wtf, you cannot even control aspect ratio on it and have to pay for it, all while Davinci - something you won't get on iPad - is free and offers full movie studio grade editing options). iPad Fun would be better name for the device - it's fun to use! It's actually an amazing device for that. But for 90% of the professionals out there? Hell no.

Hey, I am a Ph.D. student and I need something that I could simply use as a tablet to write on (just like a pen and paper so that do not carry paper with me anymore) and at the same time be able to use a laptop that has a keyboard and can also use the statistics or other software in the class. I was thinking to get an iPad pro and a MacBook but buying both could be expensive. Is SP8 able to do both jobs? How long can it last? I have heard that Apple products are going to last for a long time (maybe even10 to 15 years). What would you suggest? I would appreciate your help

To the point already made here, "it's all about the use case." So if you are in business most likely you are going to be in a Microsoft world especially on the applications side, if you are more towards, arts, media, education, you are on the Apple side. These are two fine products but I would ask yourself, "What is my use case" in order to decide which one is better for you.

I'm towards arts, media and education and I see no reason to get iPad over SP8 - it simrply lacks in software. Like I mean really, what reason as a serious artist would I have to pick iPad over SP8 when the latter offers full Adobe suite? For media production SP8 offers software such as Davinci Resolve - which rivals or even exceeds Premiere Pro while being free, on iPad I have Premiere Rush (yay) - a bare bones editing software that I have to pay for monthly. If my use case was a media consumption toy - then I'd go for iPad simply because the mini-LED screen offers better contrast ratio. But even then, it's totally overpriced for that when there are tons of cheper OLED tablets on Android side.

It's time to stop comparing a laptop with a tablet ,period, iPad still can't do what a MacBook Pro can do ,so why you guys still comparing this iPad with the surface Pro . Surface pro can do whatever a macbook Pro can do . Check your email , watch a movie doesn't mean you can use an iPad to do some heavy work that's a MacBook can do.

I use my iPad Pro for everything basically. It is literally my computer for college. I’ve been using that was for about 3 years. I use it for word, Image editing , excel, media consumption etc. I even do some good amount of gaming on it. Would I expect this tablet to outright do what a computer can? No not really but for MOST people there is little to no difference between a tablet and a laptop anymore.

I have the iPad Pro and the MacBook Pro, I still need both . The iPad is getting better but it is still not a replacement and it is very buggy with the iOS 15. I want the surface because I want a pc with touch screen , but the surface is not a LAP top. You can’t put it on your lap with the keyboard. So whoever is designing these tablets is not asking us questions. These are simple features that make the tablets user friendly . iPad is not a replacement for a laptop and the surface is not a laptop with useful touch features.

The iPad is the best tablet, great at media consumption, but it’s terrible compared to SP8 if you’re looking to use it for productivity. It’s limited to the mobile version of apps (like O365, which lacks a lot of features the desktop version has). The iPad has much better hardware, but it’s completely handicapped by the OS. The SP8 isn’t as great of a tablet, it wasn’t designed for tablet usage from the beginning like the iPad, but if you need to get some serious work done beyond some email and web browsing then SP8 is the way to go. If you can only get a laptop or tablet and can’t get both, I would end up getting the SP8. Currently I’m using a Windows laptop and iPad 11 inch for tablet use, but starting to think about consolidating them both onto the SP8 and taking the hit on the tablet experience which may not be as great but the SP8 opens up so many more possibilities with different desktop software that it’s worth it.

More than 16gb of RAM is useless. The only time RAM 16+ is with it is if you go 128gb and run the RAM as a virtual hard drive. Edit: while I do agree that the iPad is a power house, it’s an unfair comparison if the surface was running 8gb Ram. Windows needs 16gbs due to how the OS runs. So, an apples to windows comparison would be 8gb vs 16gb or 16gb (although in the iPad 16 doesn’t really improve if much atm) vs 16gb.

One is a giant iphone the other is an actual computer, yes it has a faster processor but what's the point if you can't really use it to it's full potential, whereas in surface pro 8 since it's runs a proper desktop OS it can actually do proper work. The iPad pro M1 is a consumption device not really a productivity(broad task), it shouldn't really be called a pro device if it doesn't run MacOS

I went with the iPad 12.9 Pro (2021 version) over rivals for three reasons (it’s my second iPad Pro, which was a 1 terabyte 2018 12.9 model): - 2 Terabyte internal storage space which is great for editing videos (yes, I can upload them to the cloud but I need to store it on the device first) - LTE connection as well as Wi-Fi (Microsoft seems hesitant about adding this on many of their Surface tablets/computers for some reason) - Apple Pencil not only draws/sketches well, but easily attaches & charges to iPad as well Yes iPadOS leaves much to be desired, but lets just say that I have not been on a traditional keyboard since the original iPad Pro came out in 2018 & do not miss it! After attaching a magic keyboard I no longer think of or need a laptop.

Surface Pro 8 w/ keuboard is both thinner and lighter than iPad Pro w/keyboard and runs full desktop software. I see no reason to pick iPad over SP8, iPad is way too limited when it comes to software (but to each their own, it's your money!) Btw, I ordered the LTE version of SP8, so I have no idea what you are talking about it not having LTE.

I love how capable tablets are now BUT they're still accessories, even the oldest and slowest computer/laptop can do a lot of things that a tablet doesn't... I'm a software developer and I love my Galaxy Tab S7+ it helps a lot but it's just an extension of my computer

I have over $40,000 in computers for my photography business in which I've been buying computers over the last 8 years for and I'm NOW noticing iPad Pro can do more and faster than my $7,000 iMac 27 from 2013 and my 2015 MacBook Pro 15 with i7 and 16 gigs of ram that I'm typing on now . Yeah I'm noticing you have to buy more accessories , but I'm ready to take that plunge ....

@@tommiecooper6062 I'm sorry but since when can you compile code or open terminal, or run Linux on an iPad? That's right you can't without remoting your iPad to another computer. Hence why it failed as a computer. A proper computer is designed to do broad task, it's a general purpose machine, your a photographer, that's is in line with what apple does best a lot of creativity task do well in apple products because it's supported natively but even then can you run a full version of Photoshop or Lightroom in an iPad? Untill an iPad runs proper desktop class OS it cannot be seen as a proper laptop replacement, and apple clearly intents you to use the iPad alongside a Mac book, they want their users to own both (because greed I guess). The surface pro 8 actually outperforms laptops with the same processors in a much bigger form factor, it's actually amazing how much cooling power the SP8 has with a processor that can draw 20 to 30 watts of package power. And best of all it runs a full blown windows 11 that now support Android apps.

I haven't been able to understand if you can use the screen of the Surface Pro 8 entirely seperately from the keyboard or not? If I were to take it with me on a trip or something, can I charge it without the base? And can the pencil be charged any other way than in the keyboard?

I agree. I just bought the surface pro 8 and this piece of garbage gets too hot to even touch just from browsing chrome. It's got a small storage size for the price, it's laggy as hell and makes iOS feel butter smooth. Stick with iPad. Sure it lacks some computer feature but it's not suppose to be a computer. It's suppose to be a tablet and its damn good at it. Surface sucks as a tablet and sucks as a laptop and doesn't even come with a keyboard for 1100!!!!

Many of the Microsoft departments are out of touch with reality. Their hardware definitely is. I also used to have the MS Phone, which started well but MS ended it in disaster. I'll never buy MS hardware. The operating systems i.e. Win 11, what a nightmare that;s going to be till it settles down. They promised WIn10 would be the last operating system. However MS Office is great.

Having tried both of these, well SP7 and iPad Pro 12.9, I can say that just avoid the Surface. If you want a tablet then the SP8 will probably suck, and the Tab S7+ is a much better competitor. If you want a laptop then get a decent laptop, the MB Air is far superior and costs a lot less with far better battery and performance is much higher. If you need a tablet and laptop for a varied workflow, avoid the Surface Pro, get the best laptop you can afford and the best tablet, do not compromise for a rubbish tablet experience and a sub-par laptop usage, even if it means paying a bit extra. Hybrids never quite add up to the sum of their parts and you should not accept second best just for the premise of having just one device, as the SP8 will always be a jack of all trades and not a jack you would recommend to your friends!

Why don´t you try the SP8 before rushing to judgement? Every review suggests it´s a considerable improvement over SP7/SPX. It´s not as glamorous and powerful as the iPad Pro, but that´s also the problem: iPad Pro still has nowhere to go with all it´s power, courtesy of Apple artificially crippling the iPad Pro with iPad OS to make you pay double with an insane pricing strategy. I´m interested in the SP8 b/c it´s a PC in the shape of the iPad Pro, and therefore a truly mobile device. Lugging around a laptop AND a tablet is not quite my notion of mobility. It´s kind of ironic that SP8 may well deliver what the iPad Pro promised.....

Only a troll compares a laptop with no touchscreen, no pen support, no face unlock, no upgradability, no 2in1 design, no 180 degree screen, no detectable screen to a computer-tablet. And let's not forget all the class-action lawsuit filed against MBs for keyboard, thermal throttling, connectivity, green screen, and cracked screen (2021s lawsuit). Only a troll would compare a big iPhone that run 1.9 million smartphone apps to a real computer that runs 35 million Windows applications.

@@pixelpusher1393 I have the SP7 and SPX and can therefore honestly make a comparison. The SP8 is def a poor choice, the increased price and going with 11th gen were big mistakes and this will fail in sales. Q3 MS accounts show an 18% drop in sales year on year and they expect 10% fall in Q4! The honeymoon is over, the novelty of the Surface Pro has run dry. Sensible people are buying the Tab S7+ or will wait for the Tab S8 line. We should tell buyers that the SP8 is going to age badly with LITTLE.big 12th-gen coming soon with OLED and 2.5K 90-120Hz screens, next year will bring a big jump and buying the SP8 will be regretful come Q2 of 2022. Just telling it how it is.

@@andyH_England OK, let´s see: This is a comparison between SP8 and iPad Pro, you make reference to the SP7 and claim an honest comparison. SP8 is barely out for sale yet you make predictions based on sale numbers of older generations. The "8" in SP8 refers to the 8th year of existence of the Surface Pro, and you talk about the "novelty" of Surface Pro running dry. Uhuhh.... I rest my case.

I agree. I just bought the surface pro 8 and this piece of garbage gets too hot to even touch just from browsing chrome. It's got a small storage size for the price, it's laggy as hell and makes iOS feel butter smooth. Stick with iPad. Sure it lacks some computer feature but it's not suppose to be a computer. It's suppose to be a tablet and its damn good at it. Surface sucks as a tablet and sucks as a laptop and doesn't even come with a keyboard for 1100!!!!

@@youtubeistrash2 I have surface pro x gen 2 and I love it a lot. The Surface pro 8 is a perfect tablet/laptop solution and yes it's not the best tablet but the advantages as full desktop computer overcome the apps tablet convenience. The heat is due to Intel CPU and there is not match they can do about it other than move to ARM CPU. If the next Surface pro x CPU will be as fast as M1 and still have the same design and battery life then this will be my perfect tablet/laptop.

You should either get an iPad or a MacBook Air M1. There is no reason to buy a windows anything. Microsoft has some really pathetic engineers and designers. Not sure what’s going on at MS but they need to get rid of their entire Windows team. I mean, rounded corners was their windows 11 great feature. Disgusting.

SP8 is a real computer capable of running anything unlike the iPap which is just a toy.

What was MacOS Monterey's greatest Feature? This continuity thing where you can just line up your devices and use the mouse across them.... Totally unlike Mouse without Borders which is a Microsoft thing that is now 10 years old... Apple just made it work more easily.... oh wait, it didnt even Shop with MacOS Monterey in the Initial Release? Then what is actually Monterey's greatest Feature? I bet it is less exciting than a design overhall for the most visible things in the OS.

Windows all day bro. Way more compatability programs. Real world businesses use windows. Mac is a more of a luxury toy with flaws. I've own Mac and windows and what made me realize this was college....I had a 1700 dollar Mac and it could not do anything when it came my CIS classes. I had to drive 40 minutes to class and use their windows computers.....very disappointing but the good news is that I sold that laptop and got surface....been happy ever since and it's been able to get all my work done
