You've probably heard quite a bit about Microsoft's new Recall feature which I'm not going to sugar coat it, is literally just spyware and I do not trust that this data is never going to collected or leaked through some malware.

"With Recall, Microsoft is using AI to fix Windows' eternally broken search". Why couldn't they just... fix the search functionality?
@Aeroxima
@Aeroxima 24 күн бұрын
Use FileSeek, it does the searching fine. More and more I've realized that Windows is also just a compilation of various programs put together to make a whole experience, no different to a Linux desktop environment. They keep downgrading pieces here and there, when I went from 7 to 10, the calculator suddenly has load time and some keyboard keys don't work (because I use a different keyboard layout, and they apparently hard coded it for qwerty, unlike the previous version that just worked and loaded instantly). You can fix some things with just finding different software. There comes a point where it's really not that different from what you'd have to do in Linux though, "so why not just use Linux?"

Well, one upside to this feature is, there will be a DISA implementation guide for the US DoD that shows how to properly neuter that feature permanently. Microsoft *really* doesn't want to lose one of its biggest customers. Alas, that guide largely won't be available to the general public. :/ That all said, my personal systems are already Linux based and I only keep one Windows machine around for specific legacy work and formerly, for accessing some medical equipment that now only can be accessed by a smartphone.

Many computer users run a modified version of the Spyware system every day, without realizing it. @sprinklednights

There really is a Windows, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Windows is a virus: the program in the system that doesn't help you and doesn't help the other programs that you run. The virus is a very pointless part of an operating system, but annoying by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Windows is normally used in combination with Spyware: the whole system is basically Spyware with Windows added, or Spyware/Windows. All the so-called Windows versions are really distributions of Spyware/Windows!

The fact it doesn’t capture DRM content is the red flag for me. If it’s all kept local and not shared, then why shouldn’t it? Like it could at least capture those screen shots on some weird encrypted file format I can’t access but that Recall can. That way I could say something like “What was the document I was writing while watching Netflix on Friday?”, however the fact that it doesn’t store this DRM content is Microsoft snitching on themselves to me, that the “local and private” they claim is a lie.
@ItsRyanStudios
@ItsRyanStudios 23 күн бұрын
The fact that apps can communicate to the OS what type of content is being displayed, always felt like a major security flaw to me.
@aaskrad
@aaskrad 22 күн бұрын
@@ItsRyanStudios Why is that? Wayland has this content-type-v1 protocol that serves to hint the compositor what's being displayed. The types include: none, game, photo, and video. For example, if a game is running, the compositor may pass directly the content of the game to the GPU and not include the game content in the composition process, which would reduce latency.

@aaskrad 21 күн бұрын
The thing with DRM not being captured is that it is rendered directly to the screen via a "secure path" where the player sends stuff directly to the kernel, and then to the GPU, which renders to the screen. The media is end-to-end encrypted and the GPU and whichever output device you're watching on perform a handshake to check if they're HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) compliant and allowed to be played.

Dual boot is boring as hell, and VM... is only worth it if you have several GPU and passthrough one with also a good amount of cores... that's super annoying to put in place, and more often than not the motherboard don't support it well. Even if it worked great, you'd have to have a pretty beefy setup. Some hacker will probably release some win 11 versions without any of this recal stuff, but... I don't know... Damn ! F U Micro$oft !

I mean, if you're at the point where you're genuinely worried about a forensics team getting involved, you probably shouldn't be doing whatever it is that you're doing 😅 Plus a forensics team wouldn't need the recall feature, it would just make things a little easier for them is all. If this is a genuine concern for you, you wouldn't be using Windows to begin with. You'd be using TailsOS or something similar. Not that I'm a "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" type person, but this is a weak argument because the average person will never have this interaction. The BETTER argument is a hacker (ordinary criminal or state actor) gaining remote access to / control over your device. THEN it becomes a much more serious issue. This is why I'm not a "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" person, because the argument assumes that innocent people don't have legitimate reasons to hide things, when that's very demonstrably false. I'm not neccessarily hiding stuff from MY government, but I certainly want to hide it from every other government of the world (especially the more authoritarian ones), as well as every criminal hacker on the planet. That's really the argument we should be making because it will actually resonate with the average person that this is the WORLD wide web, and if your government can access that information, then so can every other govenment, including THEM *points at whatever country's government you trust the least* 😅

Here at Microsoft, we're excited to present to you the future. Uncannily like science fiction, behold RECALL! Adds 6GB to RAM requirements and 393GB to storage needs. Don't worry, you can turn most of RECALL off if you go into 12 different settings and 33 different registry entries* * EULA and TOS. Microsoft and its partners, developers, and future products, reserve the right to, in the future, change which settings and registry entries affect the function of Recall. You and your agents agree to forced arbitration of any damages that occur as a result of using Recall and will agree that any damages to Microsoft and its reputation are your fault and you are liable to the damages resulting to us from your use of Recall, whether that use be voluntary or involuntary due to not knowing the settings and registry changes that occurred in future updates.

@@thegoldenatlas753 Wine is really iffy. I'm sure that market share, or lack thereof, is why many major closed source desktop applications don't provide editions that run on Linux. Notably, closed source Oracle does, because Linux is so ubiquitous in the server world. I did this so that the Windows “virtual machine” has full control over the video hardware… so it can run video games with full hardware acceleration. Then I duplicated that single virtual machine several times, with most of them being completely locked out from the internet. Windows spyware is defeated, so too is the risk of picking up malware. I shut off all Microsoft updates permanently. Not needed anymore, the PC works just fine! Microsoft is strictly used for legacy apps and absolutely nothing else.

Not Apple, not Google, not smartphone manufacturers, and _definitely_ not Microsoft.

Also, assuming for a moment that this thing *really* is locally hosted... approximately what amount of (SSD / hard drive) storage-space will it take up, and what kind of performance-impact (due to constant read/write activity going on in the background) would it have on *other* software running locally that needs to use the local filesystem?

@davidmalkowski7850 24 күн бұрын
@@The_Lawnmower_ManI wouldn't be concerned about the passive performance impact; I don't believe it's any more demanding than pressing PrntScr on your keyboard. My primary concern is the CPU usage on any system that doesn't meet the NPU requirements, because of course this will make it's way to all PCs through Windows Update in due time.

So, let me understand this. They CAN differentiate DRM content from the rest and prevent the storage of it, to not upset other overlords, BUT they can't apply the same to not put at risk your privacy, for example, deleting stuff regarding passwords. Ok! I totally trust you, M$ Bro.

DRM content has always been treated in a special way by the OS. That's why you only get a black background when trying to record Netflix in your browser. The UI controls still show, just not the actual content. So there is no fancy heuristic or anything, because the DRM content is clearly marked as such for the OS.

I was shocked to how much advertising, garbage and startup apps I didn't know what's their purpose was used in windows, I've got used to... My computer is now faster, more stable and I use LibreOffice instead of MS Office. It even recognized my printer out of the box without a driver... I enjoy this. It just works.

Who wants to bet that they will generously offer to store that data remotely and not mention that remotely stored data is subject to different rules, like using it as training data for their own ad-placement algorithms. And once they are storing all those screenshots they are obviously required to hand them over to a 3-Letter-Agency as part of a "criminal investigation" aka Barry who had a hunch that the foreign-looking people in his town are up to something

That is what bothers me the most about Stallman - theres' a long list of... well, to use a HUGE euphemism "inappropriate behaviors" that he did (and unfortunately, I also saw a few of my own, in person); at the same time, when I read his short story "The Right to Read", written in 1997, I though "eh, this man is crazy, we won't ever get to this point". And yet... we're getting close. Supposedly his story happens at year 2047, and while his dystopian society won't probably happen the way he described, we have closed hardware where repairing (or even debugging the issue) is forbidden to almost everybody except authorized people, and we're getting to the point of closed hardware that you can't install alternate operating systems. The only thing that Stallman got very wrong, now that I'm re-reading the story, is that in it it seems that multiple people are unhappy with that; what I see, usually, is the opposite - people praising companies for closing stuff and stealing our data without permission...

Well, I am a student and using (arch) Linux on my Mac (MacBook Pro mid 2012, good ol' intel macs) because macOS is sooooo slow. Started with Ubuntu on a second laptop, then switched over to Ubuntu on main computer, some time after that got arched. Already made it through many DEs (started with GNOME, then switched to KDE, then Hyprland, then River, and now back at GNOME with Forge Tiling). I tried installing LFS one time on a 32GB usb stick. GCC checking in chroot failed because of full disk. I'll probably retry it with better hardware (for faster compilation) and a real disk.

How are 'excluded' apps identified? Does the exclusion of those apps persist when the apps are updated? Is the list of apps being controlled by a conventional program, or by the 'AI' (whatever that means) - because if it's the latter, there are precedents for AI systems just flat out lying about not collecting or possessing certain types of private data (or in other words, if the AI is the thing that's in charge of discerning which things not to record, it may 'decide' that all it really needs to do is pretend that it didn't record).

When they talk about DRM, I believe they are talking about IRM controlled office365 documents. Organizations typically mark documents as confidential, and normally it will blackout the content with attempts at screen capture or forwarding. If recall went around that, that would be a huge potential security issue that completely undermines the feature.
