Just a quick PSA, the logo on the front of the knife is specific to the Hellhound / Warhound blades. Those were created by Sean Marfione, and that is the reason for the "S" around the knife. The "M" isn't Microtech its for Marfione. Their customs have the "M" logo without the "S" overlay unless there is a warhound/hellhound blade on the particular knife. 🤠👍

Excellent points. I think people need to decide whether they want a functional carry or a novelty to sit on their desk. I went for the Hellhound personally just because I love the look and frankly I have other knives to do serious cutting with when the need arises. I also think this is one of those situations where if you love Microtechs enough you're probably going to end up owning both of these anyway, so no need to stress too much over it!

Hellhound Tanto is far from a "novelty to sit on a desk." It is a tried and true design and knife that serves excellently as both a self-defense knife and an EDC. Having carried a Tanto for 30+ years, and the Ultratech Hellhound Tanto since 2016 as my EDC(not my self defense knife), and having cut/opened thousands of envelopes, boxes and packages, it will do everything that you'd want to do with an EDC knife. Plus, the Hellhound Tanto grind is inherently stronger than the Warhound Warncliiffe as Sean Marfione demonstrated in in vitro(lab) testing, where the Warhound fractured before the Hellhound. Been looking into an OTF for EDC. Just recently discovered the Hellhound. I'm a fan of Tanto style blades, but my only gripe about them is the lack of a sharp edge above the point. And was very excited to see the Hellhound fixed that. But now I see this and you're making this a much tougher decision, because the War hound is looking a bit more practical for random usage. Thanks for making this vid and giving some insight I hadn't considered.

Did you see the Ultratech Hellhound Straight Razor currently available? Looks sweet and even more rare. I’ve seen it at PVK and Eknives so far

Decisions decisions! I was so dead set on the warhound because I swore off all blades with a curve for actual use. Then that hellhound started calling me... It's a tough one!

My edc is carry is a yojimbo 2 with a pick pocket.The wharncliffe blade design cuts like a chainsaw it is a formidable weapon in the right hand’s.

I have the Warhound, I'm very happy with it, but I still think the Hellhound is cooler looking. Have you seen the Hellhound ultratech razor

Yes I would. My buddy who sharpens knives pricked his finger on the tip of both knives and the Warhound resulted in a cut, whilst the Hellhound did not.

You may be right that in most ways the one is technically better than the other. At least on paper. It's kind of unfortunate that aesthetics play such a big part in choosing a knife, but I don't think I could ever get along with the warhound blade. That said, I've always liked tanto blades and I think the hellhound is the best looking one of all. I'm super excited to have just found a CT version and intend to edc it. I'll see how it does.

You make some great points. My main argument (as a hellhound owner) is that my hellhound Microtech is 90% aesthetic. There are a ton of blades that blow it out of the water regarding cutting capability. It gets the job done, but it’s more of a pleasure to carry than anything. The design is top notch. Kind of a practical “art” piece for me. As far as practicality, I can’t argue with you. Also the warhound looks almost as cool as the hellhound - can’t go wrong with a Microtech. But I agree with the majority. Hellhound is a fricken cool blade. Great video!

I like Wharncliffes so Warhound for me Went with the Two Tone Blue warhound Edit: Any Blade that has a belly will drop off the cutting power because the arc of your shoulder and hand. Wharncliffe s has no belly, they are straight, so the cutting power never drops off it will cut deeper as you go. Tanto blades are good for slicing and piercing, Wharncliffe’s are better at Cutting, Slicing, Piercing, and killing. A serrated wharncliffe would be even better choice.

Well, both are not very useful in terms of cutting performance. I have HH and it’s way nicer looking blade, and it’s tanto. Period. Sorry but your paper test does not show real advantage of WH over HH, as I guess everyone realize that these are maybe good to open letter or a package with another knife. Both are thick, grind is not for performance, even cutting edge is like 30 something degrees. It’s more personal taste and very often you go for WH as HH is not available and you want something fancy. I have mine for looks and very light cutting tasks like opening a package of haribos for my daughters 😉

Sorry, but I don’t agree with you. I will concede that I agree that both designs are somewhat flawed being OTF’s (my friend who sharpened both knives noted your points that they were both very thick and had very high sharpening angles), however I respectfully disagree with your point about about the paper test not showing an advantage of the WH over the HH. The WH as I said is one continuous cutting edge, whereas the HH is not. In fact the HH’s tip grind makes it pretty mediocre for stabbing and slicing, whereas the WH is a good stabber and slicer (my buddy pricked his thumb accidentally on the WH, but not the HH which he felt was overrated), not to mention you get more knife to slice with. The WH isn’t pretty, but it is a decent design from Marfione and Microtech, and has been used on OTF’s and folders. I agree that the HH looks cooler, but it’s tanto style tip sucks period. The WH has very real advantages over the HH in terms of actual function and design, ignoring aesthetics and many people recognize and recommend it over the HH.

@@CobraKaiNoMercy it’s like comparing tanto vs wharncliffe blade. I’d say I prefer first because you have two functional tips and somewhat of a belly. (Ok, MT examples has some limitations because of grind - we both agreed) Wharnies are very attractive looking knives but straight cutting edge has a lot of limitations and in case of real cutting we need to be clear that you’ll use mostly the tip. So I’d agree that with slicing a piece of paper, you will have some extra blade, but please keep in mind that while doing it you may operate a bit differently and you still will be able to reach same length. My HH was surprisingly sharp on „both” edges, and could easily shave with „tip” portion (still the grind makes it quite useless knife). So to sum up, it’s a personal preference, tanto vs wharnie, and in this particular case, both are pretty bad cutters. But we’re clearly not designed for this.
