I remember when I got that album in the early 90s. Steve's playing and clarity of tone were the greatest thing in the world of bass that I had ever known. I actually got to have pizza with him and the rest of the guys in Testament at the time (except for Lombardo) late after their show in 1999. They came in to the place that my old band was eating, struck a conversation, pulled a table next to us and hung out from about 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Steve sat right next to me. I was 20 at the time and he treated me like I was an equal peer to him, discussing playing, tone and influences.

I bought Individual Thought Patterns close to when it was released, I think in 1993 or 1994. @@umrasangus perfect example of the fart bass. I like them but that bass tone gets under my skin so I can't manage more than a song or two. This is how bass in rock and metal supposed to be played. Hit these strings hard

People don't realise or appreciate how similar his playing is to Les Claypool's, but of course the context for DiGiorgio is a lot more technical material. Nevertheless, they both hit those tasty chords and use slides to perfection to accent just where needed. I guess the bigger asset to both is how they use their creativity. There are a lot of tapping and whatever metal bassists, but none come close to Steve, in my view he's the at the very top, even far beyond metal.

I can’t think of anyone better than Steve on bass. The album in which he collaborated with Death is a masterpiece

He's on both Human and Individual Thought Patterns. This is from the latter, the drummer is Gene Hoglan, which makes it that much more amazing. Then again, most other Death records are masterpieces as well.
