My way takes 2 min : rinse the rice, put 2 volume of boiled water for one volume of rice (or use mass if you are fancy and have a kitchen scale), bring to good boil, turn the gas off, cover and leave on the stove and go do whatever you like. The rice will be ready when you need it. No microwave or rice cooker and comes perfect, especially sushi rice. This is based on chef's techniques to make Rissotto. The initial boil and the subsequent cool down will cook the rice perfectly without breaking down the flavours and texture.

My current rice cooker cost $13. Worth every penny, love a cheap Aroma rice pot.
@TelevisionJohnson
@TelevisionJohnson 8 ай бұрын
Energy wise, a small 6 cup rice cooker saves about 100 watts per use. At about $35 for a stainless steel Aroma, 20 cents per kwh, and 100 uses per year - it would take 17.5 years to pay for itself. Most rice cookers only last 5-7 years with the rare oddities lasting 15+ years. If you pay more for electricity, then it would be closer to break even. Some savings could come from the fact that all of the excess steam from cooking rice in the microwave will reduce it's lifespan also. Uncle Roger obviously isn't an Asian if he doesn't know watt a watt is.

One nice thing about using a microwave to cook rice: it will not burn or stick to the bottom. Here is the equation to cook rice in microwave: (weight of rice and water in grams * (100- starting temp in Celsius)) / microwave wattage * 10 = how many minutes.

I used to live in a dorm who didn't allow us to cook in our rooms. We weren't even allowed rice cookers! So I cook my meals at the office where we only had a microwave at the break room. My glass, microwaveable lunch box had a cover with a small hole so I cover my rice while cooking and it only takes about fifteen minutes to cook. The rice turns out fine if you just get the timing right.

The microwave is actually really easy if you can't use the stove top and don't own a rice cooker, I did it a bit when I moved out, a rice cooker is the best, the stove is a good option but if you're making too many things/have to leave it alone cause you're doing something the microwave is a good option, and if you fuck it up just use it for the next mornings breakfast of fried rice (Filipino household for me, garlic fried rice is a breakfast staple)

I have had a rice cooker for at least 8 years and I haven't used it in 5. I saw a guy named Chris Cho and followed his rice cooking ever since. My family and I have never had better rice. He is on KZfaq, Facebook and probably a lot more. That guy knows how to cook great food. I even told him that I will never use my rice cooker again for making rice. All it is used for now is dried beans.

Basmati rice is really convenient in a 1000w microwave. You can just throw it in there for 10 minutes and then just leave it there until you are hungry.

Rice cooker is great and all. But this kinda works pretty well. I just let mine run for 25 minutes and sit for another 20. I use basmati rice so the room for error is pretty much zero. So I don't get any clumps. But of course, if you have a rice cooker that'd be better. P.S. My kitchen is a bit small to accommodate a rice cooker without sacrificing the cutting and choping area

That’s smart though. I don’t need more appliances cluttering up kitchen space. Also I can just stick the pot in microwave, cook rice, stick the same pot in the fridge to save rice for later. No need to transfer rice from rice cooker and then wash rice cooker and all that. Additional steps I don’t need just for plain white rice. Genius. I will definitely be doing this, and I am someone who eats rice occasionally rather than daily.

This. In my house we have a Tupperware rice cooker that goes in the microwave. Cooks for 15 minutes and it's good. We don't have room for a rice cooker. Microwaves sure as hell aren't fine dining but I don't get shaming people for using one. It's great if you just need to get food in you and don't have much space.

I used to cook my rice and pasta sometimes on my microwave because I just had one electric stove that I used for the meat or the eggs. Sometimes people don't have any other way available to cook it and that's not a bad thing, Sometimes money is an issue, sometimes not. Today I use a bowl of water on a 4-stove kitchen.
