0:00 Mahan Air Flight 603 was a regularly scheduled flight from Washington Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport carrying 393 passengers and 12 crew including the cockpit crew. On December 17th, 2023, 9:26 AM EST on Sunday, the A340 operating the route slammed into another plane of its kind, known as Lufthansa 907. Onboard Flight 907 were 277 passengers and the same amount of crew on the Mahan Air flight, also including the cockpit crew. This midair collision damaged the tail section of Flight 603 and caused the left winglet section of Flight 907 to disintegrate. It also injured all 670 passengers in total in both planes. In fact, if the two planes exploded after the collision, it would take first place over the Charkhi Dadri Midair Collision of 1996, and it would also be deadlier than Tenerife. Luckily, both flights were able to execute successful emergency landings. Mahan Air 603 was able to land safely at a nearby airport, while Flight 907 was able to land safely and rescue all of its passengers in the sea. It was later determined that the cause of the crash was due to pilot error. Flight 907 had its traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) turned off at the time of the accident. The 7 eyewitnesses of this event were KLM 77 in a 787-10, GTI (Atlas Air) 69 in a 747, American 9525 in a 757-221, KAL 271 in a Airbus A380, KAL 185 in an Airbus A350, CI 103 in a 747-121, and Garuda Indonesia 800, in an Airbus A320. KLM described a sudden yellow light that looked like an explosion, GTI 006 described the same thing as KLM, but they saw the planes as they were at lower altitude than both flights and crossed paths, American 9525 was just above both flights, and in fact, the passengers in the right side of the aircraft ironically filmed the entire thing happen, and all other eyewitnesses described the same thing as KLM or GTI. (About 3 seconds later) Pilot: OK, we’ve somewhat been able to keep the plane stable, now we just need to emergency land. Co-pilot: Divert to the nearest airport if possible. Pilot: Okay. (Skip to final approach) Pilot: Ok, get ready for it. Co-pilot: I am ready for anything. Pilot: Me too. (12 seconds later) (Loud crashing sound of landing gear treading on the runway) Pilot: That was hard, but that don’t matter. Co-pilot: Yep, it was a thought anyway. Pilot: We are heroes on the ground, and in the air. Co-pilot: I wonder if those Lufthansa pilots made it.. Pilot: Eh, they probably did.
