Mid-Summer 2023 Look at the Bur Oaks

After a few requests for this, I finally got out and did a mid-summer look at the bur oak trees! I believe the last time I did a video of the trees with leaves on them was back in their second year, and most bur oaks that are planted as a bare root plant look pretty miserable until the third year. At any rate here they are with leaves on them! This has been a very stressful Spring/Summer for them because of the heat/drought caused by this year's El Niño, but bur oaks respond to above ground conditions like this by expanding their root system, so next year I expect some stellar growth! Actually, this year's growth may be as much or more than last year by the end of the year - it's still far too early to tell.
Finally, the acorns. Three of the trees have acorns on them, and bur oaks usually do not produce acorns until they are 35 years old! The best acorns are on a 4 or 5 year-old tree, and the ones on the 8 year-old trees are all cap with no nuts! We'll watch the progress of the acorns, and try to collect as many as possibly in the fall and see if they germinate! It will also be very interesting to see if any of the trees produce acorns next year, or if they produced them because of stress? Stay tuned, we're going to find out 😊

Wow, that's very impressive growth on those relatively new trees! Planted a 6ft tall northern red oak here (northwest IL) back in the fall of '20. It only grew a few inches in '21, grew 18-20" last year, but then this year it only grew a few inches again. I'm guessing it must be putting a lot of effort into developing the root system and that's why it's not growing much yet on top. Hoping to see explosive growth like you have in the next season or two.

I fertilize the trees, and water heavily when it gets droughty (less than 1" per week. Northern Red oak is a lot faster growing than these bur oak. Hopefully things are alright. 🤔

Hi Mojo, nice video,I think every tree has its own characteristics as for your burr Oaks considering the drought your having are doing the best they can,the acorns look amazing and you wouldn't expect any self respecting squirrel to pass up a few free acorns lol, I watch another guy on KZfaq from Wisconsin he has a small family concrete business called Victory outdoor services,he was saying the same about the drought your having.

Thanks Larry! I looked-up Victory Outdoor Services and it is in Brookfield very near where I grew up in the Milwaukee area. never heard of them, but I know that area very well! I believe the entire state is in drought, but we're definitely getting the worst of it on this side of the state. I've watered the trees twice this year so-far, but now with my surgery restrictions, I wouldn't be able to drag the 250' hose. It's going to be hard to find things to do under 20 lbs. for a month! 😑 I hope I can at least collect at least one of those acorns though!

It will be interesting to see how much the trees grow this year during the drought/heat. It was like three feet on some of them last year wasn't it?

I agree! So-far, it looks like some didn't grow at all, but that might be deceiving. The new growth gets brown and corky pretty quick. I can clearly see growth on a few though!

They all look like they are doing really well, despite the drought. Credit to you for planting them. I am about to plant my first Burr Oak. I have planted white and swamp white on past years.

Thanks Stump Farm! Not if I can help it on the bur oaks. I would like to keep them as natural as possible, but have done a bit of pruning on crossing branches, etc. I am pruning the lower branches on all of the red oaks though because they have a higher sensitivity to fire than the white oaks (and I want to see what is behind them😉).

Really interesting video, I live in the UK, the Bur Oak is a rare tree here, but I did plant one in a local tree collection in January 2009, don't know how well it's growing I got crippled by ms 5 years ago, but I hope to take a look at it this summer

Thanks Sue, and sorry to hear about the MS! I would definitely go check on it. Did you plant the tree from a bare root or was it from seed? If it was bare root like mine, it takes about two years to get over the shock from having the tap root pruned, then with proper care, it will start growing fairly rapidly. If you grew it from seed, it may be 4 or 5 feet tall, and if it was a bare root, it could be 15 feet tall! 😊

Not sure if you saw the acorn video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/breTq5eY2bfYp6s.html), but I was just back there yesterday and looked at the "abnormal" acorns, and it turns out that they are not abnormal at all! Now I know how a bur oak acorn develops. It is all cap for about half it's existence, then starts swelling a lot and the acorn inside starts being exposed. The acorns on this tree are already larger than any acorn I have ever seen, and it looks like they still have at least three weeks to go! I'll be making another video on the acorns in a couple of days, should be very interesting!

@@PlanetMojo yes I saw the abnormal acorn video also, I commented on it that around my area it’s usually along time b4 you see acorns, the burs just grow so slow down here typically

Greetings from Milwaukee (thought I saw you might be from Wisconsin)! The leaves of the tree at the 22' mark appear to be hybridized, likely with Swamp White Oak. This is a hybrid native to Wisconsin called Schuette's Oak. Look up some photos to see if it makes sense. I planted two of them in my back yard last fall, hoping for as much growth as you've seen! Looking forward to updates.

Hi Matthew! I was just in Milwaukee the other day - very loud compared to here! As for the tree, that row of trees were from a batch that was purchased from a nursery in Michigan, but everyone I have talked to says the same thing, bur oak (and white oak in general) hybridize easily, and they cross with Swamp White Oak very easily. I just looked up Schuette's Oak, and see that they are native to Michigan as well so it very well could be what this is. I'm going to take more time and see if I can nail-down exactly what this is next summer. It was sold as a bur oak, but it may even be a straight-up swamp white oak 🤔

@@PlanetMojo seems like the lines blur a lot when it comes to white oaks 😂. The bark looked a little corky to be straight swamp white but they're probably too young yet to tell. I think if The bark starts exfoliating as they age thats a sign of swamp white parentage, as well as the two color leaf. I'm germinating Bur hybrid acorns right now and the guy who gave them to me has no idea what with so ill be super curious to see what comes out!

Those bur oaks look beautiful. Its funny how each oaks has its own character. The curled leaves on some of them are aphid damage i wouldn't worry about that to much trees can shrug that off.

Thanks Jim! That explains the ants! I've been wondering why there were so many ants on some of the trees, and aphids would explain that! I'll have to do a bit more research on pests and diseases in oaks. It's all pretty fascinating 😊

Do you ever have trouble with deer bothering Burr Oaks?

The worst was last year during rut, a buck attacked a tree and broke a big branch. Usually they just nibble a bit here and there, but normally I spray the ones along the deer run with deer repellant until they are bigger. Once they have enough size, the deer can't harm them much.

Hey, I just recently planted a bur oak seedling, when I came to check on it one morning its only branch was broken off, the main part of the tree is still intact and the roots are still intact. I’m wondering if you know if my tree will survive this damage

I would say yes. I had several bitten-off to the ground, and this one girdles by rabbits, and they will send up new shoots from the roots. When it does that, pick the best shoot and remove the rest. The one in this video grew from a tiny shoot to a 6' tree in one summer! It's been a year now, and it's about ten feet tall.
