Boy, back in 1960 at the Boy Scout Camp on Casper Mountain, in February at 10 to 15 below, I had a ww11 surplus sleeping bag, a canvas ground cover and an old canvas tent. Several pairs of socks and my wool coat. Cotton gloves and my scout backpack with a tin cooking kit, and a couple of cans of Vienna sausage and beans. A jug of water and a wool cap. We sure were doing it wrong. :)

I rode a motorcycle thru Death Valley at night in July a couple years back, and from 12:30 am to 04:30 am I never saw another soul. Out in the middle of DV, I stopped on the road and shut off the bike, the silence and darkness were overwhelming! It may be the closest thing in North America, to a foreign planet. And it was 108 F at midnight in Furnace Creek!

I was actually coming here to say something similar- went in by motos about 10 years ago on Christmas day with a pal. Ran up the mountain roads 'til we hit snow, then came down to Badwater and up to Teakettle and Racetrack. Definitely would love to fly in, just me and the tinnitus.

Went there in the late 90s with my then girlfriend (now wife) We were staying the Furnace Creek Resort and one night we grabbed a bottle of champagne and went out to the middle of the salt flats in our rental Ford Explorer. Climbed up on the roof (because rental) and there was ZERO sound and the most amazing view of the stars we have ever seen. Hit the scan button on the radio and it did not pick up a single station. So cool.

Anyhow I’m just plinking with my grandpas .22 LR and low and behold I got jumped by 2 F-4 Famtoms scared the bejesus out of me. First Fighter jets I had ever seen. Way cool. I was 10 yrs old. Keep up the good work and thanks Juan. 👍✅🙏

When I first moved to my place here in Trinity County back in 83 the local coyotes would go past my bedroom windows just after dawn on a well worn path. Assuming that coyotes are mostly nocturnal we figured they were on their way back to their den after a hard days night making a living We also have lots of local gray foxes that live right here on our property and the occasional mountain lion leaves their tracks in the snow

Whoa!! I absolutely love this adventure you shared. As a backpacker I can related to some of your camping gear; the lighter the better. With today's technology the light stuff is efficient, comfortable and worth every dime. As a hang glider pilot of 46 years I envy your ability to carry your camping gear, land out, setup camp, enjoy the wilderness and then takeoff from level ground - they haven't invented a hang glider able to flap its wings for takeoff yet and I'm not about to attach a motor to it :).

Good to see they have opened up the pools again. Didn't know there are coyotes in Saline Valley. Been going there since 1992. Have flown into the chicken strip a few times in a Cessna, 8 inch wheels and STOL kit helped greatly. There is so much to see in SV, hard to ever do it justice. The windy season is around March, April. Call a pilot in the Owens Valley, they can advise you. If you are spending time in the area, stop by The Cerro Gordo Silver Mine and offer to help Brent work on restoring the Ghost Town. The mine is off the south Saline Valley entrance, White Mountain Talc road. Scout it on maps before hand. The Cerro Gordo road eventually connects to highway 136 in Owens Valley. Saline Valley used to be BLM land. This is when most of the pools and surrounding area grass and trees were planted. The problem is that the National Park took it over and can not leave well enough alone. While they allowed the runway to stay, they have put in place rules which are geared to eventually return the area to desert. NP service doesn't seem to understand they are to serve the people, not the other way around. I would like to request that if you visit there, please show respect for the area. Take only photos, not of the nakid people, and leave only foot prints.

That looks like a great place to get away from it all👍🙂 I went camping once back in 1990 at "Soggy Dry Lake" in the Lucerne valley area in California, with some friends that I worked with, a couple of them being aircraft mechanics, one bringing his airplane and the other bringing a helicopter that he rented, the rest of us driving in and bringing our ATV's, it was a great time and we had lots of fun with the airplane and the helicopter🙂 We even had some unexpected guests, when a man and his wife were flying over us and became curious about all of the fun we were having and decided to land and spend some time with us🙂 It was an awesome weekend🙂 Juan your camping trip in your airplane definitely has me thinking back to that weekend, you're as free as a bird with your airplane and it's great to see you enjoying it👍🙂

Excellent point about light GA mountain flying safety. Maybe he’s covered it before in his videos, but I was a little surprised Juan didn’t at least mention a few words about it. Just read about the very experienced F-18 pilot who augered into Star Wars canyon in July 2019 that Juan mentioned. He flew over those mountains so many times and trained so many others, he got a little too comfortable and complacent and paid the price in an environment with razor thin margins. Even in a slow prop job, your margins are small over the mountains if your engine goes out and you haven’t prepared for it.

2nd try. Great video, takes me home. Grew up in the Eastern Sierra, explored all over there, when Dad got his license and plane Cessna Hawk XP we flew out of Bishop. You should check out the airfield up on Coyote Ridge south west of Bishop, was a High Altitude Helicopter test facility for the military. Locals use to fly in with Super Cubs, Scouts and Bird Dog.

You should talk about the Sierra wave one of these times. Got almost flipped crossing over Olancha Pass one day. Also, from experience, turn your boots upside down and place on the chair at night. Scorpions love a warm boot to pass the night in.

Even the most experienced pilots have trouble in the mountains. Steve Fossett, the first to solo a balloon and an airplane around the world, crashed and died in the High Sierra.

Having entered Saline Valley to the springs from Lone Pine, South Pass, and Lippincott Road, the Lone Pine is the easiest and Lippincott the hardest. All three are fun and worth the effort.
