Why the fuck would they make remastered Blu-Rays, but not add any more special features? If you are buying this set, that means you probably either have a 4K TV with a 4K player, or you have the disposable income to get both. Who's going to even be using the Blu-Rays? If they had included the original, non-DNR'ed Blu-Rays, that would have made sense.

Yeah, and that’s the reason you put regular BluRays in 4K packages in the first place: because the extras are never in 4K. What good are the BluRays in this package whatsoever??

Still have my original extended edition dvd sets. I have much fondness for that packaging. I wish more companies would invest in PRACTICAL novelty packaging that actually fits on a shelf instead of giant weirdly shaped boxes

Yes. This cardboard package looks like it would get dog-eared pretty quickly. The old DVD LOTR extended edition packaging was the best by far. Subtle, clever and appropriate graphics. Please stop with the boring Photoshop montages, they just look like a student graphic design project.

Same here! The Green, Blue, Red 12-disc DVD Extended edition with each box modeled like an old book is pretty much unbeatable in design and content. One of the best collectors editions ever made. All you need when you have it is the 4k versions.

Having these films in 4K is...nice and all. But I'll NEVER get rid of my original extended release DVD's for the OG trilogy and the original extended release Blu-ray of the Hobbit films. Not only was the book-like packaging of those releases the BEST packaging that the films ever got, but they also retained the hours upon hours of the special features, internal artwork, world maps, index information, etc.

I kept my Blu Ray LOTR set with the appendices (9 discs worth of fascinating extras!) and got the beautiful 4K LOTR steelbook set. For me, there seemed absolutely no point in me buying this, especially for the price. The steelbook sets look SO much nicer and prettier IMO.

When I think of the care and effort and sheer generosity of content with the special features of the original DVD extended editions of LOTR, the lack of any of them in this collection - let alone any substantial new material - is shameful. If each film had been given a new special features disc with retrospectives, interviews, etc, I probably would have bought this.

It’s because like with the evil dead these new 4K transfers of the films aren’t the originals. The cgi & colors were edited to match the hobbit films so having all that supplemental material is contradictory to the films as they want you to see them now which is why they just added something new with nothing old included. It’s the same as Star Wars now. Just re-edits the director wants to make till it’s the current years version they imagine them to be

The different ways you can display the packaging is cool, but I usually don’t love boxes because I like the uniformity of blu ray cases with standard slips on a shelf

To be fair, I'd definitely call it "Ultimate". Ultimate disappointment, ultimate missed opportunity, ultimate waste of money, ultimate joke of a release, etc. Great video Jeff, appreciate your candour having been given early access to this one.

What a disgrace. These extras were the best I've ever seen. So much content, so much amazing work, the gold standard and they basically say "Nah who gives a damn about making ofs anymore." WE DO!!!

The very first thing I'd have done if I was making this "ultimate set" is: don't include the normal blurays. Only 4K editions. That removes a LOT of the discs right there giving plenty of space to include every last extra included with the original DVD and Bluray collections. Secondly, remaster the 4K Lord of the Rings movies without the DNR. The color coding of Fellowship can be kept but go with the original grading for Two Towers and Return of the King. Take out the weird "dream filter" effect added in. The Hobbit using a special cut to turn it into two movies. The first sticks to only showing the things that were in the books. The second would be a sort of "Gaiden story" revealing Gandalf's mission away from the dwarves as it's own story. Cut out the love story stuff and just about everything to do with Tauriel and Legolas, leaving the two to briefly walk in as little cameo nods and nothing more. That's my ideal collector's set.

Phweeew... I bought the two 4K set packs. Then found out about this set. I'm thankful you reviewed it the way you did. The box itself is very cool admittedly, but not worth another purchase. (Already have the DVD extended editions, the Bluray extended and the 4K extended sets and I think even the 3D versions floating around). I'm one for really enjoying the extras in the sets - there are so many featurettes etc in the DVD boxsets, hours worth - I've watched all of it. There's around 10 hours worth of extras or some crazy amount but that is what I was hoping for in this new release, more of that and maybe more commentary (yes I nerd out listening to the commentaries too). I've always been a wannabe film maker and have always been interested in how they do things, LotR and Hobbit filming methods and Peter Jackson's ability to bring it all on film blows my mind. No doubt they will release a Director's Special WhizBang Mega Edition in 2024 for the 70th anniversary - when Lord of the Rings was first published as a book (1954).

I remember a couple of years ago there was an ultimate edition of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings extended edition that was 800 dollars! It came in a bookshelf with Bilbo's journal, and premium quality box for the films.

Yep that was awesome. I didn't get it as it's very expensive but I'd certainly love to own it! It craps all over this edition. However I get they probably think a 4k equivalent of that wooden set wouldn't sell well given the cost but this set looks cheap to me yet also still isn't cheap. Just a giant dissapointment all around and clearly a "care factor" cash grab to exploit the fans.

Previously, the digital versions of the extended editions included the vast majority of the legacy special features. I imagine that's true of the digital copies included with this set. True, they should have put them on disc as well. But at least you'll have them, if you don't already.

For weeks I tried to figure out which of the 4K sets to buy and I always wondered why none of the usual sites I order or get my film news from mention any kind of extras. Jesus ... "The Appendices" ARE an Ultimate Collector's item. This is such a missed opportunity. Even with the (truly gorgeous) steelbook sets.

It’s kind of hard because most of us bought the original 4K release and kept the bluray addition with all the extras. Would be losing a lot of money paying the huge price tag on this and still not getting all the additional extras. Great video though mate 🇦🇺

I did order this and did give it up when I did hear that extras were... not in this. What did they think? I was hoping to get rid of old disk, but no... Have to keep those to get appendix. Maybe we get complete set in LOTR 50 years celebration... sigh...

Won’t consider this complete until they release the High Frame Rate versions, which you know they’ll do at some point. PJ made such a big deal about these being filmed with HDR HFR cameras.

I had feeling this set would be crap. Glad i kept my Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings extended and theatrical editions trilogies on Blu-Ray. Im huge fan of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings that is why I have both the extended and theatrical editions on Blu-Ray.

I was lucky enough to snatch this for $100. Right now, each 4k trilogy set is $43 and $47, so the difference is about $10. You definitely get more bang for your buck if you can find this "collector's" set for $100, especially since you get blu-rays. For $250, though, it's ridiculously overpriced. Overall, I'm just happy to have the movies in 4k in a nice display, even if the lack of specials is disappointing.

The extended editions being separated into two discs is a bit annoying, but it does fit the 6 book structure the original novel was split into (2 books per volume).

Very disappointing box set, as I was holding out to see what this would offer, but I'll be happy to get the individual trilogies at a cheaper price, especially since I'm not a fan of the Hobbit Trilogy so I may skip that entirely.

I have the Middle Earth Collection from a few years back with the beautiful wooden box and exceptional sketch book style art book. THAT was the ultimate edition. Something you want to show off. But the 4K Ultimate Box? What a joke. Literally every previous Collector's Edition, including the amazing DVD boxes back in the day, were a hundred times more effort than this cheap thing. Really looks like a cheap cash grab.

4:45 And that's why you keep your earlier releases from over the years. If you care about extras that is and I do. My 20-years old DVDs laugh at this release in this regard. I might get this just to get those theatrical cuts on Blu-ray because I only the extended version on BD. What comes to the Hobbit trilogy, I haven't even seen it yet, too it seems I have to buy a separate set just to get extras. That's ridiculous!

This set is another case of just because it's 4K doesn't mean it's automatically better format. I'm so glad I kept my blu-ray and DVD sets. Plus I've seen still shots of the Lord of the Rings in 4K. The DNR and HDR on the Lord of the Rings and it looked really fake and unnatural. They made it look too much like the Hobbit and while I do love The Hobbit trilogy, you don't take Lord of the Rings more realistic film style and turn it into the Hobbit. Comon People!!! Sorry for angry rant there. I'm just angry that 4K messed up the gritty, realistic style of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

They got the two towers and the return of the king color scheme wrong on the box art. The two towers is supposed to be red, with the return of the king being blue.

What a shame! Such a clever package design… And looking at the amount of space that ONE bonus disc takes up in the package, I have to wonder if the original intention was to include new versions of the appendices discs.

I need your help please!!! I wanted to get the ultimate for my husband for Christmas until i learned from you that the special features really arent there. Then i discovered the 6 film extended and found out the movies are region free but all the special features are region 2 and wont play here in the US. The 4k extended versions you have as links in the description....are the special features region free and what do they entail cause the special features in the other one i mentioned seemed cool but again wont play here. Also what about the steelbook edition? I am so sorry to bother you but i feel so lost! I love the movies as well and we always enjoy rewatching them together so thats why i wanted to get this for him but as far as which way to go im just not sure what to do. All i need is lotr and hobbit extended versions on bluray with the cool appendices extras Thank you in advance! Also thank you for sharing this video and links it was very informative as to what all you are/are not getting.

I'm so glad I got the Lord of the rings. Steelbook set. I've got no need for the regular blu-rays and I prefer the steelbook packaging over this Middle Earth packaging

Your opinion has been the consensus regarding this so-called "Ultimate Edition." I have the "LOTR" Trilogy in 4K UHD, and have no interest in "The Hobbit." Thanks for confirming what I already believed!

loks sck but dont lke how they messed with the colos of the colors for two towers and return of the king. the first one is green and has the hobit leaf they shouldve just made it rohan and the white tree. plus that last cover spoils stuff quite a bit i know alot of us have seen it but what if you wanna watch them with Someone who hasn't seen it

It is a nice box set but some new content would have been nice. Could be worth buying for the Dolby Atmos upmix but it's fairly pricey, might pick one up when I find it on sale

i have all the old dvds and blu rays, just wanted this set in 4K at a "reasonable" price all things considered. Its not the greatest collection, but its decent. If only Marvel would come out with something like this, besides that hard to find region free version. Imho the trend is away from physical media and the "ultimate" editions are suffering as a result. This is probably the best we'll get, maybe they'll cram in a statue in at some point.

honestly the only reason this is worth it for me is because i only have the theatrical cuts of LOTR on one of the original dvd box sets and i have the extended cut of the first hobbit movie. if i already had the theatrical and extended cuts of all the films on blu ray i probably would have just bought the 4k steel books for each trilogy
